NM bill would expand range of concealed weapons
A bill that would expand New Mexico's concealed-carry firearms law into some new places was introduced in the legislature today.
The bill would allow people with concealed-carry permits to bring their guns into bars, schools, university classrooms, and buses. Supporters of the bill point out that those permit holders are people over 21 years old, with clean criminal records, who have passed a gun safety class.
This isn't a bill designed to allow kids to carry arms to school, said one of the bill's sponsors, Rep. Zach Cook, a Ruidoso Republican. I wouldn't support legislation that would allow children to bring a weapon to school. This is for parents and other responsible, law-abiding adult citizens.
Some lawmakers admit they are staggered by the idea.
The week after the Tucson Massacre, to have dreamed this up - really? asked Sen. Jerry Ortiz y Pino, an Albuquerque Democrat. This is almost incomprehensible to me. It just seems to me that it takes things in the wrong direction.
Last year the legislature passed a bill that didn't go as far as this one. Now state law, it allows concealed-carry in restaurants that have beer and wine licenses.

Gun store opens
store and shooting range opens in albuquerque. the owners hope it becomes the keystone of an outdoor sports retail center. stuart dyson reports from the new calibers store on washington just off i-40. this is gun-guy heaven - gun-gal heaven too - a 4 million dollar investment in new mexico's love affair with firearms and the survival of the second amendment. both appear to be in robust health judging by the crowd at the grand opening of the new calibers - and it's not just about retail sales of guns and ammo - this place is all about the art and science of SHOOTING. Our goal is to have regional and national shooting events here - we want to have a facility that is better than anything in the country - where people can come in here and know the quality of the product that they've got and enjoy this sport. THE shooting positions are stunning - thirty yards with electronically controlled targets - you can shoot rifles IN HERE. When you hit the control the target wil go down and then you can make it turn - go down further and turn so you can have different options of shooting - and the classes are wonderful. LIKE THE OLD calibers there are classes for every shooter - from beginning to advanced - and concealed carry classes too - the emphasis always on gun safety and responsibility. the calibers guys are thinking big - beyond guns - on the way here - los pinos fly shop for fishermen - and a daily grind coffee shop and bakery for anybody who needs a caffiene fix - at calibers stuart dyson k- o-b eyewitness news 4. a new mexico newspaper reporter
Report finds NM 6th in nation for lax gun laws
A national coalition finds that Arizona is the most permissive state in the country when it comes to gun laws.
According to the recent report by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, Arizona is the easiest state in the nation to buy a gun. New Mexico ranks number six.
Here all you need is an FBI background check and applicants are asked on a form if there is a history of mental illness.
KOB Eyewitness News 4 went to the Calibers Shooting Range in Albuquerque Tuesday and discussed the state's firearm laws with sportsmen.
Lawrence Carreon said he supports more gun laws and worries that weapons can get into the wrong hands, especially of the mentally ill.
An individual who is mentally ill, it's going to be difficult [to diagnose them] because I think our mental health system is broken down, said Carreon.
The problem is it's so hard for the courts to get proper information to make those adjudications, its pretty unreal how many people they probably miss, opined Adam Golson.

Albuquerque Shooting Range Park Worker?
Really? Either an instructor. or City worker. Out of state plates even. Working for the City or even as an instructor it has to be well beyond the 15 day limit in New Mexico. A couple times it would even seem he's on his phone.

Shootin Guns In New Mexico
Me and my buddies shootin my AR-15 in the desert!
The Calibers 1st Annual Central New Mexico Scorcher
The 1st Annual Central New Mexico Scorcher is in the books, and it was an all around excellent match! We had 8 fun filled stages that proved pretty challenging as there were lots of armored targets, plenty of movers, and many head-shots only.
Stage 1 was a go-fast stage, the non-threats were not really an issue, and there was plenty of space to move. Only one reload required, and just 12 shots. The no-shoot swinger was no problem at all, plenty of time to make your shots.
We started the day on Stage 2, and I as the 3rd shooter up. I was moving a little slow just to make sure I was making good hits. I wanted to start the day off on the right foot!
Stage 3 was a room scenario, with a swinger that had to be engaged on the move, and you could not re-engage from cover at P3.
Stage 4 had some tricky shots at a long angle, basically shooting through a door way without exposing yourself to the targets in the next shooting position. I found it easier to engage the targets from further out since that made sure I would not get a cover call.
Stage 5 was an PITA for me! not because it was hard, it really wasn't, but because I had to shoot it 3 damn times! The first time, I shot the cable attached to the popper that activated the swinger and drop tuner - so neither one activated. The second time through the target on the swinger flew off the sticks and had to be re-attached. Finally on the third run I was able to complete it all the way through. The stage required you stow both your magazines but all it said was in an IDPA legal spot - I put one in my mag pouch, the other in my pocket as I was pretty sure I wouldn't need more than 1 mag. Just about everybody else put both in their pouches, which looked like it took too much time for only a 16 rd stage.
Got my only procedural of the day on stage 6, and looking at the video it was deserved. I was way too far over to the left and was exposed to the swinger. There were 2 ways to shoot the stage - and we all chose to shoot it using the barrel as cover instead of hugging the wall. Worked out pretty well, except for the PE!
Stage 7 had a double swinger with a No Shoot in the middle. Looked complicated until they activated the swinger - it was moving so slowly that it really wasn't a problem at all. There a few long shots, so I made up 2 of them just in case, but looking at the targets I didn't need too, they were all good hits.
Finally, stage 8 was the standards stage. I was WAY too many points down on the one-handed shooting. I'm usually pretty good off-hand or strong had. I guess I was a little too confident and rushed it. Like my friend Kurt says You can't win a match on a stage like this, but you sure as hell can lose it!. Lesson learned - slow down and make the hits!
Overall I was very pleased with my performance. I came in 1st places for SSP Expert, High Military (though I was the only one registered, but still!), and most accurate with only 37 PD. I had no FTN's all day, which I understand was pretty rare as almost everyone I talked too had at least one. I also beat all the experts in all the other classes. Looking at the top 10 shooters (I was 9th) they are all Master Class, so I think my shooting is coming along quite nicely. Hoping to make MA by end of year!
