The Calico Tanks Trail hike is one of the most popular in Red Rock Canyon. It's challenging without being too hard; the trail takes you through beautiful sandstone formations to a desert watering hole with views of Las Vegas.
Hiking the Calico Tanks Trail
Hiking the Calico Tanks Trail at Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area on a very hot day. There was no water in the tanks so we saw no animals around the tanks but on our return to the parking lot, at Sandstone Quarry, Vicki saw a bobcat. We then saw a flock of Gambel's Quails and a rabbit. Probably the most popular hike at Red Rock Canyon and for good reason.

Calico Tanks Trail 360 VR
Calico Tanks Trail is one of the most popular hikes in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. The trail ventures up a canyon colored in both yellow and red sandstone. Add the gray-blue mountains to the northwest and you get some seriously vibrant views. The trail ends with two rewards, a hopefully-not-dry pond and an overlook of Las Vegas. This scenic hike is 2.5 miles round trip with 420 feet of elevation change. Most of the trail is easy, but it does have several moderate scrambles up sandstone slopes. Even if the sandstone-cradled tank at the end of the trail is dry, you should find great Las Vegas views year round.

Exploring Red Rock Canyon Las Vegas
The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area in Nevada is an area managed by the Bureau of Land Management as part of its National Landscape Conservation System, and protected as a National Conservation Area. It is located about 15 miles (24 km) west of Las Vegas, and easily seen from the Las Vegas Strip. The area is visited by over 1 million visitors each year.
The conservation area showcases a set of large red rock formations: a set of sandstone peaks and walls called the Keystone Thrust. The walls are up to 3,000 feet (910 m) high, making them a popular hiking and rock climbing destination. The highest point is La Madre Mountain, at 8,154 feet (2,485 m).
A one-way loop road, 13 miles (21 km) long, provides vehicle access to many of the features in the area. Several side roads and parking areas allow access to many of the trails located in the area. A visitor center is located at the start of the loop road. The loop road is very popular for bicycle touring; it begins with a moderate climb, then is mostly downhill or flat.
Red Rock Canyon itself is a side-canyon accessible only by a four-wheel-drive road off of the scenic loop. The unnamed but often-visited valley cut through by State Route 159 is commonly, but incorrectly, referred to as Red Rock Canyon. The massive wall of rock called the Wilson Cliffs, or Keystone Thrust, can be seen to the west along this highway.
Towards the southern end of the National Conservation Area are Spring Mountain Ranch State Park, the western ghost town replica attraction of Bonnie Springs, and the village of Blue Diamond.
Calico Tanks - Red Rock Canyon
This shows a bit of the hike to Calico Tanks in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. The trail-head is at Sandstone Quarry, which is the third turnout on the 14 mile loop inside Red Rock Canyon. It is a 2.5 mile hike that culminates with a view back of the whole city. I did not include the view in the video...if you want that, you'll have to do the hike!
Red Rock Canyon - Ice Box Trail & the Calico Hills
A hardcore hike on the Red Rock Canyon State park in Nevada, USA, Starting with exploration of the scenery Ice Box Canyon, a 3 miles back and forth hike, should take around 3 hours to complete.
Hiking through this trail during winter time will require you to walk in water, in it's river bed, scrambling up, climbing on rocks and boulders and until getting to the fall in the end.
Best time to do this hike is in the winter, when there is snow on the surrounding mountains and water are gushing through the canyon.
Another short hike is the Calico hills trail, a 0.8 miles easy to moderate circular hike where you'll get to scramble through the vibrant redish sandstone rocks, towering over the trail, by the end of the trail there is a moderate climb that will take you to point Calico 2 where the trail ends, carefully walk on the side of the road back to Calico 1 where we have left the car.
The Red Rock Canyon is located on the outskirts of Vegas, only 30min drive from the strip, it is an excellent park for anyone staying there few days and would like to escape the noise and glittering lights to the quite and peaceful atmosphere of the Nature.
This video is not a replacement for a trail map, make sure to get a proper hiking trail map and visit the visitors center before taking a hike.
Also make sure to check weather conditions for flash flood warnings or extreme heat.
Make sure to take sufficient water with you and have good hiking boots.

Some facts of Red Rock!
AZTEC SANDSTONE
The great sandstone cliffs at Red Rock, thousands of feet high, are made up of the Aztec Sandstone. This formation, about 180 - 190 million years old, is comprised of lithified sand dunes that formed in a vast desert that covered a large part of the southwestern United States during the Jurassic time. Lithification is the process of changing unconsolidated sediment into sedimentary rock. Massive cross-bedding, typical of aeolian (wind) deposits, is a result of the shifting wind direction across the Jurassic dune field and is seen in the Aztec sandstone.
RED COLOR
The red color of some of the outcrops of the Aztec Sandstone is due to presence of iron oxide or hematite. Exposure to the elements caused iron minerals to oxidize or “rust,” resulting in red, orange, and brown-colored rocks. Areas where the rock is buff in color may be places where the iron has been leached out by subsurface water, or where the iron oxide was never deposited.
DINOSAURS
The tracks of small bipedal (two-footed) therapod (meat-eating) dinosaurs have been found in the Aztec Sandstone at Red Rock Canyon in three different places. The small animal tracks made by proto-mammals, early mammals, and arachnids (spiders and scorpions) were also found. Paleontologists are still researching these site.
LIMESTONE
More than 500 million years ago Red Rock Canyon NCA was at the bottom of an ocean basin. Mostly limestone (and dolomite) accumulated in this ocean basin for over 250 million years during the Paleozoic Era. The limestones contain the fossils of sea life that flourished during that time. Thousands of feet of the gray Paleozoic limestones are exposed at LaMadre Mountain to the northwest of the Scenic Loop.
