Spirit of Nevada - Caliente
Cathedral Gorge State Park with its dramatic and unique landscape formations lies in the Meadow Valley of Lincoln County. Nearby Caliente served as a water stop on the railroad line until steam engines were replaced by diesel locomotives in the 1940’s. Still standing is the historical Caliente Railroad Depot and the antique Boxcar Museum.

Caliente Nevada was founded in 1901 on Culverwell Ranch (or just Culverwell), built on land owned by William and Charles Culverwell. The town was initially given the name of Calientes, due to the hot springs present in the area, but later in the year a post office was erected and workers removed the s from the name of the town. In 1905, the Union Pacific railroad was completed, followed by the construction of the train depot in the style of Spanish mission architecture. The train depot, built in 1923, is now home to some city and county offices and a museum that exhibits historical information. The town once reached a peak of over 5,000 residents, but its population continually declined

Exploring Historic Caliente, Ca.: Kern County's Early Transportation Hub
Caliente, Ca. is now just a collection of a few houses and a railroad crossing to those just passing through on the way to Lake Isabella or Walker Basin. Few realize the history of it or its importance in the early development of Kern County and the Southern Pacific Railroad.
The exact date of its founding is not clear but by 1860 people had begun settling there for various reasons. The gold strikes of the Paiute Range and the formation of the town of Havilah as the County Seat brought stage and freight lines to the last location of flat ground before the trek into the mountains.
In 1874 the surveyors of the Southern Pacific Railroad had determined this is where the climb over Tehachapi Pass would begin and the railroad began laying its track to this point. In 1875 the line had reached Caliente and a railhead was established as crews attacked the grade through the mountains.
Freight and miners were de-trained here and taken by wagon and stage to the strikes in the Paiutes and railroad material and workers were stockpiled here until the completion of the line to Tehachapi in 1876.
The railroad installed two large water tanks and Caliente was a water stop until the end of the steam era. SP also established a telegraph and train order station and passenger, freight and express agencies at the new depot and many businesses popped up here such as hotels, restaurants, saloons and freight and stage agencies. Ranching was also becoming a big business and permanent residents had begun settling here.
As the Paiute mines began to play out in the early 1900s, business began to slack off and some were closed but Caliente continued to be an important location for the railroad until the end of the steam era in the late 1950s.
Today, little is left to tell travelers of the importance of this once bustling community.
So, join me for a tour of the nearly forgotten community between Bakersfield and Tehachapi!
