Santana Row derives its name from Frank M. Santana, who served on San Jose's planning commission in the 1950s, who is also the namesake for the area's Frank M. Santana Park.
The 42-acre village within a city was developed as a luxury, mixed residential and shopping district between 2001-2002, for a cost of $450 million and was at the time regarded as the most ambitious project of its kind in the United States. In 2010, it was called an arguably successful mixed-use development
The site was previously a Town and Country Village. On August 19, 2002, during construction, the largest building at Santana Row (Building 7, Santana Heights) caught fire. The fire eventually caused $130 million in damage, and embers spread to at least 13 apartment buildings, some with wooden roofs, nearly a mile downwind of the shopping center on Moorpark Avenue, across Interstate 280. The main fire spread to five alarms, while the secondary fires required six alarms. It was the largest structure fire in San Jose's history.
Santana Row continues to expand in 2017. Santana Row has a population of 24,196 within a one-mile radius and 740,000 within the 5 miles (daytime) trade zone.
Santana Row offers a mix of brand name shops, local boutiques, thirty-six establishments serving food, nine spas and salons, CineArts movie theatre, and the boutique hotel Hotel Valencia.
The shops range from luxury brands such as Gucci and Kate Spade to more casual brands like H&M, Ann Taylor LOFT, and Urban Outfitters.
The Row also includes restaurants ranging from local concepts like Left Bank Brasserie and sister restaurant LB Steak, Pizza Antica, and Ozumo, specializing in Japanese cuisine to chains like The Counter, Maggiano's Little Italy, Pinkberry and a Yard House that closes at 1:00am. The district is anchored by Crate & Barrel, Best Buy, and The Container Store.

Lights - San Jose 1968
Two teenaged filmmakers from San Jose documented their late-night California cruisin' in San Jose 1968.
Richard Machado and Gary Morales captured this funky, psychedelic film in the summer of 1968, cruising San Carlos Street, Bascom Avenue, Stevens Creek Boulevard, and other local strips, lit by the late-night lights and theater marquees of the period.

Mall Meandering (ep. 209): Westfield Valley Fair
Mall Meandering (ep. 209): Westfield Valley Fair
Westfield Valley Fair, formerly named and known as Valley Fair, is an upscale indoor shopping mall in San Jose, California, United States, owned by the Westfield Group. It is located in the heart of Silicon Valley, at the corner of Winchester and Stevens Creek Boulevards, straddling the border of San Jose and Santa Clara. The eastern portion of the mall (including Nordstrom and Macy's women) is located in San Jose, and the western portion (including Macy's Mens & Home) is located in Santa Clara.
Westfield Valley Fair is one of the largest malls in Northern California, and is directly across the street from another large upscale retail development, Santana Row. It has the highest-sales volume in the state with $1,150 per square foot. The shopping center consists of 273 stores, a seventeen-outlet food court, nine restaurants, and is anchored by two Macy's stores and Nordstrom.
Westfield Valley Fair is unique in that it replaced two separate 1950s-era shopping centers. The original Valley Fair Shopping Center, opened in 1956, was confined to the eastern side of the property in San Jose. It was developed and anchored by Macy's and included roughly 40 other stores including Joseph Magnin in an outdoor plaza. At the western side was another outdoor shopping center, Stevens Creek Plaza in Santa Clara. It was anchored by The Emporium and I. Magnin. For that reason, the current mall contributes sales tax revenues to both the cities of San Jose and Santa Clara, and is regulated by both city governments.
In 1986, both centers were acquired and merged into one two-level enclosed mall by The Hahn Company, creating one of the most successful shopping centers in the country, called simply Valley Fair. Nordstrom joined later in 1987, with I. Magnin closing its store in 1992. The former Emporium store became a second Macy's location in 1996, housing Macy's Men's & Home Store. The former I. Magnin housed a succession of tenants, its final one being Sports Authority, and its building sits vacant. It will be demolished, along with the former Old Navy building, as part of the mall's upcoming expansion.
In 1998, Westfield America, Inc., a predecessor of the Westfield Group and The Rouse Company acquired Valley Fair jointly from Hahn. Westfield bought out Rouse in 1999 and brought in an institutional investment partner to share its investment risk in this high-profile property. In 1998 the property was renamed Westfield Shoppingtown Valley Fair. Nordstrom replaced its location in 2001 during the grand opening of a new $165,000,000, two-phase redevelopment. The former Nordstrom reopened as additional mall retail space in the second phase in 2002. Westfield discontinued the Shoppingtown moniker in 2005.

The Tech Museum of Innovation - San Jose, California - Amazing Museum
The Tech Museum of Innovation, or simply The Tech, is a museum located in the heart of Silicon Valley, in downtown San Jose, California, United States.
The Tech Museum reflects its social context, capturing Silicon Valley's celebration of technology with a fascination with what the museum’s literature refers to as the “gizmos and gadgets” produced by Valley companies. Early reviews, however, criticized The Tech for failing to provide a coherent direction or message.
The museum is composed of three floors, each with its own significance. The ground floor has the main entrance, a gift shop and cafe, the Imax theater, and a recreational area that is reserved for special events. The Tech Museum's architecture is the work of Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta.[4]
Four major theme galleries fill the upper level and lower level of the museum: Communication, Exploration, Innovation and Life Tech. These galleries are constantly being revamped and changed to fit the theme movies and exhibits. On the lower level there is also a public piece of artwork titled Origin, which is inside a 45-foot-tall (14 m) cylinder.

San Francisco (Spanish for Saint Francis), officially City and County of San Francisco and colloquially known as SF or The City, Alternatively known as San Fran, is a city in—and the cultural, commercial, and financial center of—Northern California. San Francisco is the 13th most populous city in the United States, and the fourth most populous in California, with 883,305 residents as of 2018. It covers an area of about 46.89 square miles (121.4 km2), mostly at the north end of the San Francisco Peninsula in the San Francisco Bay Area, making it the second most densely populated large U.S. city, and the fifth most densely populated U.S. county, behind only four of the five New York City boroughs. San Francisco is the 12th-largest metropolitan statistical area in the United States, with 4,729,484 people in 2018. With San Jose, it forms the fifth most populous combined statistical area in the United States, the San Jose–San Francisco–Oakland, CA Combined Statistical Area (9.67 million residents in 2018).
As of 2017, it was the seventh-highest income county in the United States, with a per capita personal income of $119,868. As of 2015, San Francisco proper had a GDP of $154.2 billion, and a GDP per capita of $178,479. The CSA San Francisco shares with San Jose and Oakland was the country's third-largest urban economy as of 2017, with a GDP of $907 billion. Of the 500+ primary statistical areas in the U.S., this CSA had among the highest GDP per capita in 2017, at $93,938. San Francisco was ranked 16th in the world and third in the United States on the Global Financial Centres Index as of March 2019.
San Francisco was founded on June 29, 1776, when colonists from Spain established Presidio of San Francisco at the Golden Gate and Mission San Francisco de Asís a few miles away, all named for St. Francis of Assisi. The California Gold Rush of 1849 brought rapid growth, making it the largest city on the West Coast at the time. San Francisco became a consolidated city-county in 1856. San Francisco's status as the West Coast's largest city peaked between 1870 and 1900, when around 25% of California's population resided in the city proper. After three-quarters of the city was destroyed by the 1906 earthquake and fire, San Francisco was quickly rebuilt, hosting the Panama-Pacific International Exposition nine years later. In World War II, San Francisco was a major port of embarkation for service members shipping out to the Pacific Theater. It then became the birthplace of the United Nations in 1945.
