How to Survive 3 Nights in a SEAT on U.S. TRAINS, Solo | Amtrak California Zephyr
The other week, I ACCIDENTALLY booked myself a single seat (not a bed!) on Amtrak's California Zephyr, a journey crossing the ENTIRE United States of America over 4 days. It wasn't easy, but I'm always up for a good survival challenge :D
See how I survived this crazy journey! Would you do it too?

History and culture
The town was named for the 19th-century Chief Winnemucca of the local Northern Paiute tribe, who traditionally lived in this area. He and his band had a camp near here. Winnemucca, loosely translated, means one moccasin. The chief's daughter, Sarah Winnemucca, was an advocate for education and fair treatment of the Paiute and Shoshone tribes in the area. Their family all learned to speak English, and Sarah worked as an interpreter, scout and messenger for the United States Army during the Bannock War of 1878. In 1883 Sarah Winnemucca published the first autobiography written by a Native American woman,[3] based on hundreds of lectures she'd given in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic. It has been described as one of the most enduring ethno-historical books written by an American Indian.
On September 16, 1868, the Central Pacific Railroad reached Winnemucca, and was officially opened on October 1 of that year. It was on the First Transcontinental Railroad. It was part of the transcontinental line.
Basque immigrants worked as sheep-herders starting in the mid-19th century. In honor of this heritage, Winnemucca hosts an annual Basque Festival.
On September 19, 1900, Butch Cassidy's gang robbed the First National Bank of Winnemucca of $32,640.
Winnemucca's brothel district, while smaller now than in the 1980s, is known as The Line or The Ring Circle, based on the layout of the street where the brothels are located.[citation needed] Sex workers in the town must register their vehicles with the local police.
According to a billboard along State Route 140 (the Winnemucca to the Sea Highway), Winnemucca styles itself The City of Paved Streets.
Winnemucca is home to the Buckaroo Hall of Fame and Heritage Museum. It is also the headquarters of the Flawedcast Network.
Chinatown
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Winnemucca had a vibrant Chinatown. The Chinese originally came to the area as workers on the transcontinental Central Pacific Railroad, which reached Winnemucca in 1868. Some remained or returned to settle. During the 1890s, around 400 Chinese formed a community in the town. Among their prominent buildings was the Joss House on Baud Street, a place of worship and celebration. In 1911 the community was visited by Sun Yat-Sen, later to become Chinese president. He was on a fund-raising tour of the United States to help the Xinhai Revolution.[6] The Joss House, the last structure associated with Chinatown, was demolished on March 8, 1955, by order of the Winnemucca City Council.

Amtrak Train Ride Provo Utah to San Francisco, California – California Zephyr
California Zephyr at Truckee, CA
The arrival and departure of the eastbound zephyr. The air was very smoky from the different fires burning in california. In Truckee, the train performs a double stop but due to a camera malfunction, I did not catch the move up. Also because of the malfunction, I had to switch memory cards to one that didn't have magic lantern software so I had no control of the apurature of the camera and it automatically chase f22 hence the spots on the shot of the train leaving the station.

Amtrak Coast Starlight, in a Sleeper Car Bedroom
The overnight 14 Coast Starlight (Amtrak) from Los Angeles to Seattle.
--3 states
--1,377 miles
--36 hours
--29 stops (a few afford a chance for some fresh air, for a few minutes)
--incalculable jaw drops at the beauty seen from along the ocean coastline to the snowy mountain ranges and backdoor views of towns and cities.
I can't recommend this enough! What an experience! What a way to see the country! The whole ride was smooth, quiet, and tranquil. Whether you enjoy a book in the glass-domed car while sipping on some coffee, or nurse a beer through the passing majesty outside your window, you are rocked gently into a relaxation that is unlike any other. The staff was ever ready to accommodate needs and/or wants. Guest speakers rode along, regaling passengers with tales of the flora, fauna, and history of the areas. Fellow passengers were in equal states of awe and wonder, evidenced by the acknowledging head tilts complete with twinkling eyes and hearty grins. Childhood fancy was stirred together with an aged appreciation and I found that though we were moving northward, time had stood still.
Note: Yes...I have since learned to refrain from filming in portrait mode, when using a phone. ????
Note: Thank you, all, who have clarified that it's a Lounge Car featured in this video, not an actual Parlour Car. I did not intend to mislead anyone; during our ride, the staff and fellow passengers were calling it the Parlour Car, and I was at fault for following the flock in my understanding. Our train's Parlour Car must have been undergoing maintenance, at the time. I did find, however, the Lounge Car to be quite enjoyable. Nevertheless, I imagine riding with an official Parlour Car would enhance the experience, greatly. Thank you all, for clarifying this, for me and for others.
Note: for mobile device viewers, annotations don't appear on-screen. At the 2:28 mark, it should be noted that There is a traditional door on this bathroom; it's just not visible, here.

tour of Amtrak Superliner observation car on California Zephyr
This shows both levels of an Amtrak Superliner observation car. The lower level is where you get snacks, sodas and wine or beer. The operator of the concession stand was very enthusiastic about his job and I enjoyed hearing him announcing his wares. I waited too long to get video of the lower level. I had intended to show what the concession stand looked like when it was open, but by the time I got around to getting the camera down there, he had closed up. The train more or less closes down everything as it gets to the end of the line. The train involved here is the California Zephyr in early November 2015.
Southwest Chief - Amtrak Superliner Bedroom - LA to Chicago
Amtrak's Southwest Chief is an absolutely spectacular journey from Los Angeles to Chicago. The scenery, especially in Arizona and New Mexico is jawdropping! I recently rode on this legendary route and showcase both the train (extensively) and the vistas.
I rode in an Amtrak Superliner Bedroom (Room E) on the second floor. In this video, I show you everything in the room (the seats, the washroom, the tables and basically every nook and cranny!
I also walk the length of the train both from the outside and the inside - showing you the dining car and the observation car as well.
I also showcase at the start - the magnificent Los Angeles Union Station - what a stellar way to start the rail trip across America!

California Zephyr Train - Chicago to San Francisco
I didn't spend too much time edit the video. I just put all the clips that I took along the way from Chicago to San Francisco.
Riding AMTRAK's California Zephyr
This is a condensed video showing the progress of AMTRAK's California Zephyr train from Chicago to Emeryville, near San Franciso, in late December, 2015. I edited down about four hours of video I took to and hour and a half, but pretty much everything of interest is represented in the version presented here. I think people interested in taking this great trip will get a good feeling of what they will see during the journey.
I have other videos about what it is like to ride an AMTRAK Superliner train, especially what to expect in a Roomette in a sleeper car on such a train. Accordingly I have NOT included that kind of information in this video.....it is just about the California Zephyr route and scenery.
In this video, you will see the departure from Chicago's Union Station, passing across northern Illinois, then continuing the next morning near Denver, Colorado, then the scenic passage over the Rocky Mountains, then continuing the next morning near Reno, Nevada, with the crossing of the Sierra Nevada mountains and finally the flat transit to the Bay Area and the arrival in Emeryville.
Amtrak 2017 California Zephyr - Emeryville, CA to Chicago, IL
Here is a video I took of my recent trip on the California Zephyr from California to Illinois. It shows the scenery as well as the interior of the cars, giving you a good feel for what the trip is really like.
