Exploring Calypso's cave near Ramla Bay in Gozo, Malta
Located a short distance from Xaghra or a pleasant walk from Marsalforn (my choice) it overlooks the red sands of Ramla Bay. It is assumed to be the cave referred to by Homer in `The Odyssey' where Calypso, the beautiful nymph kept Odysseus as a `prisoner of love' for seven years. The cave is a tight squeeze in places and requires a torch but it's worth the trip just fot the view.

A beautiful swim through opening up into what must have been a cave once, but now with its roof caved in, letting in the sun rays and creating a very magical feel within. Not a common dive site but definitely worth it. We were lucky enough to later sight 2 large Amberjacks, several Dentex and a large Grouper. A super dive.

A cave close to Calypso tunnel, ful of shrimp. Excuse the poor images but thats the best I can do with my GoPro. There must have been thousands, startled by the light, moving away from us, but as they approached to exit to the cave turned back. Quite funny.

Steeped in myth, Gozo is thought to be the legendary Calypso's isle of Homer's Odyssey - a peaceful, mystical backwater. Baroque churches and old stone farmhouses dot the countryside. Gozo's rugged landscape and spectacular coastline await exploration with some of the Mediterranean's best dive sites.
The island also comes complete with historical sites, forts and amazing panoramas, as well as one of the archipelago's best-preserved prehistoric temples, Ġgantija.
Gozo also possesses a nightlife and cultural calendar all of its own, with some great dining out.

12 UBUCers went to Gozo from the 6th to the 12th June 2014. We stayed in a big farmhouse with a private pool, hired cylinders and weights from Calypso divers and loving coaxed our ancient hire jeeps to the dive sites... And did some awesome diving including Cathedral Cave, Blue Hole, Recca Point, Xwenji Bay, Billinghurst Cave, Inland Sea and the P31.
