A look at Camdeboo National Park
The Eastern Cape is home to a number of national parks conserving the province's diverse spectrum of fauna and flora.
One of these parks are the Camdeboo National Park.
But it is set apart from all the other National Parks in South Africa for two reasons.
First, the world renowned Valley of Desolation and the fact that it is the only national park which almost surrounds a whole town, Graaff Reinet.
Couple that with some excellent game viewing and you have a must see visit destination.
Our reporter Janine Lee did just that.

SOUTH AFRICA Camdeboo national park (hd-video)
Small national park near Graaff Reinet.
There is a tented camp (5 tents) and a camping area.
You must bring all food and drinks with you, because there is no shop or restaurant.
There are a number of birds at the lakeside (we saw flamingos).
The beautiful Desolation Valley is part of the park.
EPISODE 2: Calitzdorp to Camdeboo
The plan was simple, take our 1983 Toyota Celica Supra and point it at Camdeboo National Park in the Eastern Cape some 1750km away. We'd cut the trip into four 400km legs per day, in a car that didn't have power steering, air conditioning, a media player of any sort, not carpets or roof lining and that was a crucial omission since this was an African summer.
Episode 2 takes us from Calitzdorp Stasie to Camdeboo at last where we would pitch our tent for the second time. Luckily, this trip would be a lot less fraught.
We will be uploading an episode each week in June, each Friday morning. Enjoy!
NB: If you'd like to see our adventure in print, buy the next issue of WILD CARD MAGAZINE.
It was a miracle that we were idling where we were, less than 100m from a buffalo swishing itself cool with its tail.

Addo Elephant National Park
Visit Addo Elephant National Park in the Eastern Cape for a wild escape and a natural adventure. Addo Elephant National Park is in close proximity to Port Elizabeth which makes it ideal for a day or a weekend trip.
Swellendam and Bontebok National Park, South Africa
About two hours east of Cape Town is a lovely little Dutch settlement called Swellendam. It is easily accessible through public transportation and is surrounded by the Langeberg Mountains (Marloth Nature Reserve), which has numerous trails for day hikes and overnight treks. You can spend the day at nearby Bontebok National Park, a nature reserve with hiking trails and animals that include antelope and zebra. Also a short distance away are numerous wineries along the Robertson Wine Route and many opportunities for horseback riding. Overall, Swellendam is a quaint town with a relaxing atmosphere including many family-run Dutch inspired restaurants in its humble downtown area. It may be the perfect stop for a couple days of of R&R on a more rigorous tour along the Garden Route.
Steytlerville, Eastern Cape, South Africa
Situated in the western parts of the Eastern Cape, Steytlerville is the home of peace and tranquillity. Here one can rest, relax, refresh yourself and recharge the inner batteries of your soul, while exploring, enjoying yourself and indulging your need for some unusual entertainment.
Steytlerville lies at the entrance to the eastern parts of the Baviaanskloof and showcases a host of architectural gems like quaint Edwardian- and Victorian-era houses with tin roofs and large street-facing verandas complete with broekie lace and stained glass windows.
One of the best towns the Karoo has to offer, Steytlerville with its bougainvillea-lined streets and horse-drawn carts is a diamond waiting to be discovered. It comes as no surprise then that the town is home to several South African personalities, as a holiday in this town easily leads to relocation.
Steytlerville is in the centre of the wool and mohair district in the south eastern corner of the Great Karoo and is known for its astonishing variety of semi-desert vegetation which includes dwarf shrubs, tiny succulents, umbrella shaped wild plum trees and ancient cycads.

FIRST TIME VISITOR's experience in South Africa (Bits from the Eastern Cape & Garden Route)
I had the opportunity to show bits of South Africa to a first time visitor and we visited Port Elizabeth, Addo Elephant National Park, Graaff-Reinet and Camdeboo National Park, the Garden Route (Knysna, Sedgefield and Wilderness) as well as the Langkloof.
If you had the opportunity to show off South Africa to a first time visitor, where would you go?

South Africa celebrates the guardians of its national parks
South Africa has paid tribute to the game rangers who patrol and protect the country's national parks. This year, World Ranger Day has been commemorated at the Mountain Zebra National Park in the Eastern Cape. Rene del Carme was there.

Valley of Desolation at Sunset - Road Trip to the Camdeboo National Park and Graaff Reinet
Road tripping through the Karoo to Graaf Reinet in the Eastern Cape, #Camdeboo National Park. Watching the sun set over the spectacular cliffs and columns of the Valley of Desolation, rising 120 metres from the valley floor below is an experience not to be missed. This is surely one of the natural wonders of the natural world, definitely well worth a visit.
We stayed at the Drostdy Hotel in the centre of Graaff Reinet, and what a great find it is. Very comfortable rooms and excellent food at the hotel restaurant. I highly recommend it if you happen to be in town, and it's reasonably priced too.

With a particular weakness for road trips in the great open spaces of Africa, and exploring tropical Indian Ocean Islands. But actually, we're fans of anywhere that we haven’t yet been, wherever that might be.
