North Haven and Laurieton - #1 Camden Haven Tour #CAFAR
Come along on my personalised guided day trip through the Camden Haven... and see why I (still) call this area home. In this part, we cruise down the north side of the Camden Haven River, ducking in to take advantage of all the spots that have river views!
If you don't instantly fall in love with the scenery (beaches, trees, river, mountains and sky) here, I'll eat my hat (well, not really, but I'd be very surprised).
We check out North Haven and parts of Laurieton... and take in some amazing river and mountain (North Brother) vistas! Not sure if we'll get to see some dolphins in the river this time... but they are regulars here :)
So... join me on a day trip with a difference... the same trip I take all my friends on when they come to visit me here for the first time!
Enjoy!

Camden Haven NSW Tourism Video visitcamdenhaven.com.au
The Camden Haven area on the NSW Mid North Coast offers a great range of accommodation from tent sites in our great holiday parks to luxury tree houses and B & Bs. There are also motels, self-catering apartments and holiday houses. The beautiful Camden Haven is located thirty minutes south of Port Macquarie and forty minutes north of Taree. This ‘Valley of Villages’ hugs the Camden Haven River as it makes its way from the lush Comboyne Plateau to the blue Pacific Ocean. As the river meanders through this magnificent valley it passes through the villages of Lorne, Kendall, Kew, Laurieton, Dunbogan, entering the sea between North Haven and Camden Head. Bonny Hills lies to the north overlooking Grants & Rainbow beaches. Just a further five minutes north is Lake Cathie (pronounced Cat-eye) with its beautiful lake, lagoon and beaches. In the south, on the Stewarts River (a tributary of the Camden Haven River) you will find the villages of Johns River and Hannam Vale and their beautiful rural surrounds.
A key drawcard of the district is the myriad of waterways which make up the Camden Haven Inlet. Watson Taylors Lake, Queens Lake, Pilot Beach and Gogleys Lagoon are some of the natural features which are home to an abundance of marine and bird life. One of the best ways to experience the Camden Haven is aboard the vessel Far-Lap; its shallow draft and low profile allow it to navigate a large area of the districts beautiful waters.
When visiting be sure to call into the iKew Visitor Information Centre at Kew, the ‘Gateway’ to the Camden Haven.

Port Macquarie Ironman/70.3 bike course: 10x TimeWarp
A speedy look at one lap of the Ironman Australia Port Macquarie bike course. With an emphasis on showing where the (Strava) classified climbs are but many other unclassified ones, which along with the horrendous heavy road surface in parts makes for a challenging lap. Or even more so when doing the full Ironman for two laps.
Only two real climbs to speak of where the gradient goes 10% or above:
1) Sharkies Beach climb when re-entering Bonny Hills on the way back where you may need the small ring to save the legs for...
2) Matthew Flinders Drive Climb (or lighthouse climb) where an early change into the small ring might be mandatory to avoid getting jammed on the steep bit. Not sure if it's quite 20% as the Garmin says but it will feel like that and more with the heavy surface and heavier legs at that point.
Other tips are:
- Don't ride anywhere near the shoulder, aim for the car wheel tracks where some of the roughness has been flattened out, especially on the long Ocean Drive flat sections between Port and Lake Cathie, and Bonny Hills to North Haven.
- On the days before at least ride up and down Clarence St to get a feel for the ridiculously serrated speed bumps as a good test of water bottle/cage and computer mount integrity. Although from memory they may cover them with carpet on race day to avoid all sorts of potential damage to carbon wheels.
- The section of road around the Bonny Hills Garden Centre/Nursery is a fine example of modern pothole within pothole within larger pothole repair so treat as a no feed or drink zone. Hold on tight!
- And most importantly, If you get some open space riverside around North Haven / Laurieton / Dunbogan be sure to take a few glances at the stunning Camden Haven riverside scenery and the majestic North Brother (Dooragan) mountain.
Also note video has a few jumps when cutting and pasting from a Bonny Hills start/finish plus detour up said Dooragan.
