Bikaner INDIA - Drinking Camel Milk, RAT TEMPLE & Camel Safari
WE VISITED BIKANER IN LATE APRIL 2019
Oh man, we very much enjoyed Bikaner. Although we were there at the start of hot season, there was so much to do and see! We just needed to make sure we were not out during the middle of the day when it gets to 45oC. We arrived off an overnight bus from Udaipur to check into our hotel, we were knackered and it was already very hot so we relaxed and slept in our air con room then headed out in late afternoon. We booked onto the only direct bus to Amritsar, there is one even though the internet says there isn’t! You can book it in person, a couple of days before your trip with Neelam Travels. Just pop into the office and book the bus. It’s a non AC sleeper but perfectly comfortable and leaves Bikaner around 5pm and arrives in Amritsar around 3-4am. At our first hotel, the owner took us to a Camel Wool Scarf Seller Shop. These are bit of a tourist trap, the price of the cheapest scarf was around 500 Rs (£5.50) and as budget travellers, its a bit too much for us, though they did give us free chai. We then wondered around the markets and streets of Bikaner to ate at Amberwalla. I loved the Raj Kachori! The next day we got up at 8am to go to Karni Mata Temple, the Rat Temple. You can catch a public bus to Deshnoke (~45 min drive). The temple was extremely interesting, with rats running around everywhere, living the dream with all the big bowls of milk. Although we brought food to feed them, they were pretty well fed so weren’t too fussed with our food. You don’t have to pay to enter but you do pay a camera charge, I think its was around 40 Rs. Once back in Bikaner, we moved to hotel Shri Ram Hertiage, which is owned by Yogi. Yogi organises camel safaris under the name Rao Bikaji. At a discounted price (as it was off season), we headed off on our camel safari. We arrived at 5 pm (think you arrive early in the cooler seasons) to relax in the Thar desert and sleep in our mud hut. The mud huts were great, with a private bathroom and a little air cooler! Next morning, the camel ride began! 4 hours on a camel. We really enjoyed it, and saw some cool wildlife. White footed foxes, Indian Desert Jirds, eagles, vultures & Indian gazelles. Although sore bottoms were felt all round, we loved and found camels hilarious. For anyone doing a camel safari in April, start as early as possible, it gets very hot, very quickly! Next Stop - Amritsar!

Episode 3: It was a Windy day but that did not stop us from Vlogging because we both were excited to Visit the National Research Center of Camel (NRCC), especially me because this was my first time witnessing a camel from this close because I am not a local of Rajasthan, as camels are normal here. This vlog is filled with fun & dust. The research center offers a lot of things made from Camel, like Camel Milk, Camel Ice-cream, Camel Cream etc & they make Jewellery & clothes also of Camels after their Natural death. It was a nice experience for us because we were accompanied by one of our friend Nidhi Rajvi who is from Bikaner.
National Research Centre on Camel was established in 1984 by the Central Government under Indian Council of Agricultural Research at the outskirts of Bikaner city to promote research and development on camels. It is located about 8 km from Bikaner city in the state of Rajasthan in India. The key objectives of NRCC are camel breeding and health, utilisation of camel milk and its byproducts like ice-cream made of it, which makes it a one-of-a-kind institute in India. The farm is a complex of camel stables, enclosures and buildings.
Scientists engage with all stakeholders like Camel herders, traders via collaborative programmes for development of Camels. Significant growth had been made on opportunities of camel milk trade in India as a functional food because of its therapeutic health benefits, models of successful camel dairying on cooperative basis, Camel usage by BSF India as this species is found mainly in Rajasthan & Gujarat. Camels have greatly caught the attention of tourists from India and abroad.
Route: This place is on the outskirts of Bikaner, you can easily find it on Google Maps.

Riding Camels In Rajasthan Indian Camel Safari
Camels! Rajasthan! Desert! Sounds like an Indian Camel Safari.
And to get there we start with the most scary motor bike ride of my life!
Our safari was 3 hours and cost us 600 INR ($10USD) per camel.
Riding a camel is much different to a horse. Because of their longer legs you get a much different motion.
Our camel ride went through what is usually desert but being monsoon season its actually very green! Which is great for the animals. They get to eat green grass instead of dry grass.
Part way along we stopped for a break and later we were greeted by the local gypsy's playing Rajasthan music on home made instruments!
Check my other videos from India, Antarctica, Vietnam and New Zealand!
Shout out to Sarah Mockett. For being apart of the adventure.
