Dades Valley - Morocco
The Dades Gorge is a scenically beautiful section of the Dades River valley in between the Atlas Mountains and the Anti Atlas. The Gorge is best known for mesmerising scenery and the Kasbahs set precariously amongst it overlooking the river below. Gravity defying rock stacks in all shades of red look as though they’ll crumble in front of your eyes and are deeply cut by gullies created by the persistent action of the river and weather. The road north from Boumalne Dades, with its switchbacks and magnificent views is a great way to see the gorge itself, but one that is clearly used by large numbers of tourists as is borne out by the increasingly esoteric mix of road side attractions, ranging from the traditional jewelry and fossil stands, to an elaborate full sized biblical scene in papier-mâché (including high-fiving messiah) on our most recent visit.
Things to See At The Dades Gorge in Morocco - The Valley of Kasbahs
There are many things to see at or near the Dades Gorge, which is few hours east of Marrakesh, the shopping capital of Morocco. On the way to the Dades Gorge you can visit Ait Ben Haddou, Morocco's filming capital where you can see various exhibits from the Star Wars.
The drive from Merzouga or Marrakesh to the Dades Gorge should take about five hours non-stop through the Valley of Kasbahs.
The road to the Dades Gorges crosses many amazing desert places, on route N10. The drive to the Dades Gorge is a nice way to spend a couple of days in spectacular scenery, although much more congested than route N13 through the Atlas Mountains.
If you don't want to rush it I would recommend a full day, including stop overs at tourist spots, leaving early in the morning.
If it is business that's brought you to Marrakesh, then try and extend your trip by a couple of days and visit the Erg Chebbi Desert at Merzouga. If you don't want to drive alone, you can hire a private driver or arrange a tour at your hotel in Marrakesh. Leaving early in the morning you will catch the camel ride out to the desert in the after.

I avoided the big cities and the coast, and picked some of the hardest routes instead. Hard but rewarding, since I think Morocco offers some of the finest scenery in Africa. The Dadès Gorges (Arabic: وادي دادس; French: Gorges du Dadès) are a series of rugged wadi gorges carved out by the Dadès River in Morocco.[1] The river originates in the High Atlas range of the Atlas mountains, flowing some 350 kilometres (220 mi) southwest before joining the Draa River at the edge of the Sahara.[1] The many-colored walls of the gorges range anywhere from 200 to 500 meters (650 to 1600 feet)
The area which now forms the Dadès Gorges lay at the bottom of the sea millions of years ago.[1] Great quantities of sediment were deposited around giant coral reefs, and over time this material became compacted into a variety of sedimentary rocks such as sandstone and limestone.[1] Eventually, the movement of the earth's crust caused the region to rise above the sea, forming the Atlas Mountains and surrounding landscape.
The Dadès River established its course quite early in this upheaval, and the flowing water began to erode away the porous sedimentary rock of the mountains.[1] For the majority of the year, the Dadès has a relatively weak flow, owing to the dryness of the area's climate. However, during the storm season, enormous quantities of water can be forced into the river at once, creating raging torrents with enormous erosive power.[1] These torrents carry large amounts of debris from the source all the way down to the end of the river's source, and each piece scrapes away at the softer rock in the gorge walls, gradually enlarging and deepening the gorge with every flood season
