The people of Sydney momentarily forgot the upcoming Olympic Games as they were introduced to a different kind of sport - camel racing.
Camels and some potential new jockeys took over the banks of Sydney Harbour on Thursday to promote Australia's leading camel race - the Sheikh Zayed Cup.

With just eight days until the start of the Olympic Games, Australia is going sport mad.
But visitors to Sydney's famous harbour were greeted by a rather unusual sight on Thursday - a group of camels.
The camels were there to promote Australia's leading camel race - the Sheikh Zayed Cup.
Sheikh Zayed is the leader of the United Arab Emirates, where camel racing is one of the oldest traditions.
The organiser of the Sheikh Zayed Cup says the race is a spectacle not to be missed.

You don't have the opportunity to see camel racing everyday especially in a big city like Sydney. We know horse racing is very popular and you have the opportunity to see it every week, but camel racing is only promoted as a family day out, to attract families and I think it's fun. It actually represents the culture of the United Arab Emirates.

Adults and children alike appeared to be fascinated by the creatures, who seemed to take it all in their stride.
Australia is the only country where camels are found in the wild.
Camel racing began in the 1900s and soon became popular in the outback.
The first annual race was run in Alice Springs.
Now there is an established camel racing circuit, with 16 races held in towns across the country culminating in the Sheikh Zayed Cup at Royal Randwick in Sydney.
Those who tried their hand at camel riding on the banks of Sydney Harbour appeared to be having fun and organisers will be hoping this will attract a few more spectators to the big camel race of the season.

Ticking off an item on our bucket list by having a ride on a camel. This was at Camels Australia, an hour south of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.
Here is why 10,000 camels will be put down in Australia
The govt of Australia has decided to shoot down around 10,000 wild camels from the air. These camels were originally imported into Australia in the 1880s for transport purposes. There are several areas in the forest dried up due to massive bushfires in Australia. Now the camels are entering into localities in search of water. The animals are knocking down fences, water tubs, even trying to get water from ACs. According to a survey, there are nearly one million wild camels are roaming in parts of central, Northern and Western Australia. The govt has taken the decision to save aboriginal communities from these camels.

Australian Breaking News is that more than 10000 Camels life is at risk in South Australia. WWF and Australian Wild life department report that more than 10 thousand camels are shorting from the Australia due to water problems and camels in australia are many and there is shortage of water and camels drank much water and they are now going to urban and rural areas in search of water.
Australian camels are wild and pakistan also want to import camels from other parts of the world but the import of camels is not so easy and helicopter is using by aurtralian govt to tacke the camels on large scale.

We stopped at this camel farm about and came back a couple days later for a half hour ride! It was really great! My battery was dead when we came back, so this is all you get!
