REVIEWS
'For twenty odd years John Duigan's The Year My Voice Broke was the best Australian film ... his latest, is in its league ... it has confidence, clarity, wit, the range and force of a novel, superb individuated performances and a morally troubling narrative'
BOB ELLIS
'... extremely well-directed and brilliantly performed character study ... Careless Love is an engrossing well-made drama that audiences should enjoy despite its subject matter'
CHRIS SMITH (Film Blerg)
'... lyrical and moving experience'
ERIN FREE (Filmink)
'Careless Love weaves together various strands and elements that develop like a fascinating tapestry of relationships and circumstances that provoke and challenge the viewer'
ANDREW L. URBAN (Urban Cinefile)
'John Duigan's new film is a bewitching one in which morality, lies and perceptions are canvassed in a provocative and stimulating way ... Duigan has created a strong and likeable character for his protagonist and we are with Linh throughout her tumultuous journey'
LOUISE KELLER (Urban Cinefile)
'... the assurance of the direction, a reminder that Duigan -- who has been away from Australia for far too long -- was once considered the sensualist of the Australian cinema'
DAVID STRATTON
'Nammi Le gives a really fine performance in the leading role, creating a sad yet strong and resilient character with complete conviction'

Motorkite Dreaming - Carroll Karpany & Charlie Hill-Smith interview
KNUCKLEHEAD DREAMING: The superbly entertaining Motorkite Dreaming combines indigenous spirituality with goofball adventure.
For four years four Adelaide adventurers - Aidan Glasby, Daryl Clarke, Lexi Keneally and Elsie Clarke - planned a grand trek across the heart of Australia.
They would traverse 4000 kilometres from Adelaide to Beagle Bay (near Broome) in Western Australia. A grand journey by any measure, what would set this cross-country jaunt apart would be that Glasby and Clarke planned to fly two micro-lite aircraft the entire way, followed by their partners in a support motorcade on the ground.
Even more remarkable is that, after four years of planning, they left the all-important training in how to fly their second-hand flying machines to the final week.
Along for the ride was filmmaker Charlie Hill-Smith, who ended up shooting about 1000 hours of footage, and indigenous music legend Carroll Karpany.
Karpany founded the landmark Aboriginal band Us Mob, subject of the classic 1981 Australian documentary Wrong Side of the Road, and served as producer and protocol officer on the film. His duty was to make sure the 20 nations crossed by the adventurers were properly consulted and respected.
This cultural aspect is a crucial part of the film, which is intended as a conduit for cross-cultural understanding and respect. It makes its points with subtlety and sensitivity.
But Motorkite Dreaming is also a splendidly entertaining, visually stunning semi-comedy about a group of stumblebums trying to negotiate their way through an unforgiving terrain.
The film is laced with conflict, arguments and examples of what can best be described as dumb luck compensating for the evaporation of common sense. The weather might not have been on their side, but good fortune certainly was, otherwise it could have been a very different film.
As Motorkite Dreaming tours Australia, Carroll Karpany and Charlie Hill-Smith, both Melbourne-based, came in to chat about their remarkable film, its making and their hopes for it.
Independently made, the film has adopted a novel distribution model covering theatrical, DVD and online.
The film screens: 7pm Wednesday 24 August, Lido Cinema; 6.30pm Thursday 25 August, Readings Cinema (Geelong); 7pm Friday 26 August, Cameo Cinema, Belgrave; and 4pm Saturday 25 August, Palace Como Cinema.

Mother Mary Sex & Death - director Rainsford Interview
SEX & DEATH Renown Melbourne artist Rainsford used his dying mother in a film that includes nudity and real sex. Question: is it art or bad taste?
As Paul Rainsford Towner sat watching his mother slowly dying he picked up his camera and began filming her final, rasping breaths. He wasn't sure why, yet he ended up shooting more than 10 hours as she gently drifted away.
It was only later that Rainsford - artistic director of the internationally renown Chapel of Change dance/theatre/film group - and his partner Mary Salem gave purpose to the footage by incorporating it into an 89-minute art film.
The result is Mother Mary Death & Sex, a lyrical, moving, contemplative exploration of loss, death, love and sex that is often beautiful, often confronting. By any fair measure, it's an intriguing, beguiling, sensual film that combines an exploration of mortality with eroticism and the sting of grief.
When the film premiered at the Vladivostok Film Festival in 2012 Rainsford saw how it divided audiences, and it is easy to understand why. While Mother Mary Sex & Death can be appreciated as heartfelt, elegant and deeply personal, it can also be seen by a less generous mind as somewhat crass.
Alongside scenes of his mother lying in bed are sequences of Salem on the beach engaged in actual sex. One scene features Salem naked as she slowly cleans his mother. Is this beautiful? Or merely tastless? It's an eye-of-the-beholder issue.
The 89-minute film is also intended strictly as a live event, only to be seen in a cinema with Rainsford and Salem present afterwards to interract with the audience in Q&A sessions. Seeing the film on its own, he says, would be incomplete.
Thus the film, made in 2012, has rarely been seen in public - and Rainsford intends it to stay that way. It will never be subject to a DVD release or uploaded online. Either you see it live, with an audience and with the filmmakers present, or not at all.
Through the stifling Melbourne heat Rainsford was kind enough to drive the 90 minutes from his mountain home to come in and discuss the film in depth, explain precisely how and why he made it, why he was compelled to use real sex and what his vision was.
Please enjoy.
The film screens at the Lido Cinemas in Hawthorn 9pm Thursday ( the Classic Elsternwick on 9pm Friday ( and at the Cameo Belgrave 9pm Saturday (
