Protest Camp Grows Against Trash Landfill in Russia's North | The Moscow Times
Hundreds of people have gathered in a protest camp against a plan to bring trash from Moscow to a new landfill in Shiyes, a village in the northern Arkhangelsk region.
The camp has become a symbol of Russia’s growing trend toward issues-based activism and environmental protest.

Russian Geography Lesson 15 - Сибирский федеральный округ
FULL LESSON:
-------
TRANSCRIPT:
-------
Although this lesson is about the Siberian Federal District, we will be spending more time talking about things that are not from Siberia than are from Siberia due to some cultural inconsistencies. More on that following the intro song, but in the meantime check out the focus words for this lesson
You’ve probably heard of Siberian Tigers, Siberian Ginseng, and Siberian Irises, but as it turns out none of these items actually originate from within the Siberian Federal District. The tigers and the ginseng are found in the Russian Far East and the irises are native to areas west of the Urals. In between those areas we find the Siberian Federal District. In fact, the Siberian Federal District is composed of the following federal subjects:
1. Altai Republic
2. Altai Krai
3. Republic of Buryatia
4. Zabaykalsky Krai
5. Irkutsk Oblast
6. Kemerovo Oblast
7. Republic of Khakassia
8. Novosibirsk Oblast
9. Omsk Oblast
10. Tuva Republic
11. Tomsk Oblast
12. Krasnoyarsk Krai
BTW, some other things you might hear about in association with Siberia include bears, huskies, sinkholes, wolves, GULAGs, and yetis. All that is too much to cover in just one lesson and so let’s move on now to the vocabulary words for this lesson which include:
учёный - scientist
найти - to find
неуловимый - elusive
главный - general, principal, main
лагерь - camp
заключение - detention
And now for a few sample sentences showing these words in action:
Снежный человек выгнал их из леса.
(The yeti chased them out of the forest.)
AND:
Учёные нашли неуловимого снежного человека.
(Scientists have found the elusive yeti.)
In each of the preceding two sentences we see the term снежный человек used to refer to the yeti. There is also the word йети in Russian, but снежный человек is the more commonly used alternative.
Next up we have:
Его деда отправили в ГУЛаг за преступления против государства.
(His grandfather was sent to the gulags for crimes against the state.)
FYI, GULAG is an acronym which means:
Гла́вное Управле́ние ЛАГере́й и мест заключе́ния
(General Directorate of camps and detention facilities)
Although Siberian irises did not actually originate in Siberia, they nonetheless bear the name and so we will discuss them a bit at this time. As it turns out the word iris can translate as ирис or касатик. And so with all that in mind here are a few review words for you to ponder:
ветроустойчивый - wind-resistant
своеобразный - peculiar
средний - central
плоский - flat
ирис - iris
сажать - to plant
And now for the sample sentences:
Листья многих ирисов плоские.
У многих ирисов листья плоские.
(The leaves of many irises are flat.)
Цветы ирисов очень своеобразны: у них нет чашелистиков и лепестков.
(The flowers of irises are very peculiar: they do not have sepals and petals.)
Сибирские ирисы ветроустойчивы.
(Siberian irises are wind resistant.)
And finally we have…
Он пересадил ирисы в место получше.
Он пересадил ирисы в более удачное место.
(He transplanted the irises to a better location.)
And that’s it for this lesson...
Walking Tour 3 - Aleksandrovsky Sad - Znamenka - Arbat
A stay in the Metropol is so much more than simply a chance to rest and relax. It is an opportunity to travel back in time through Russian history to the beginning of the 20th Century. The site was originally acquired by a man named Savva Mamontov, who planned to create a grand cultural centre that would encompass a theatre, restaurant, winter garden, ticket offices and accommodation for actors. Mamontov was a great patron of the arts and discovered well-known artists such as Mikhail Vrubel and singer Feodor Chaliapin. Work began in 1899 to turn his dream into reality. But it was not to be. Shortly after work began, Savva Mamontov was imprisoned for alleged fraud, his assets were seized and his original plans and designs were dropped.
And the bad luck continued. A fire in 1901 reduced the building to a shell and it had to be completely rebuilt. The building you see today is the result of collaboration between an eclectic mix of architects and artists, including Englishman William Walcott, Lev Kekushev and Mikhail Vrubel. One of the most striking artistic features of the Metropol building is Vrubel's elaborate and haunting 'Princess of Dreams' mosaic panel, which adorns one side of the building.

Quale è la situazione oggi della medicina, dei medici e delle cure mediche in Russia?
In Russia, come nel resto del mondo, l'etica e il Giuramento d'Ippocrate risultano immancabilmente sconfitti dagli interessi commerciali di categoria, dal business delle aziende farmacologiche e delle grandi multinazionali. E' colpa dei singoli medici o è il sistema della salute pubblica e privata ad essere irrimediabilmente corrotto ?

Expulsion from Paradise
A small Siberian ecumenical community, „Small Ark” composed by Christian Orthodoxes, Greek Catholics and Roman Catholics, priests and lay persons mainly from Tomsk, Novosibirsk and Yekaterinburg trying to follow the footsteps of the French Jean Vanier who developed the idea and founded the well-known „l'Arch”, the community where people with disabilities live with those who care for them.
Near the city of Tomsk there is a governmental institute where approximately 700 persons live with different mental and physical disabilities without the sufficient number of attendants spending nearly every day of the year in their room.
The „Small Ark” every year brings a little group of them on summer vacation. Because of the community's low budget the location of the camp is not far, an extremely simple old summer recreation area in the forest with no bathroom or proper toilet.
No matter how are the conditions, for the disabled these few days are everything: it is Paradise.

Collectivization in the Soviet Union
Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding

SUMMARY
=======
The Soviet Union enforced the collectivization (Russian: Коллективизация) of its agricultural sector between 1928 and 1940 (in West - between 1948 and 1952) during the ascendancy of Joseph Stalin. It began during and was part of the first five-year plan. The policy aimed to consolidate individual landholdings and labour into collective farms: mainly kolkhozy and sovkhozy. The Soviet leadership confidently expected that the replacement of individual peasant farms by collective ones would immediately increase the food supply for the urban population, the supply of raw materials for processing industry, and agricultural exports. Planners regarded collectivization as the solution to the crisis of agricultural distribution (mainly in grain deliveries) that had developed from 1927. This problem became more acute as the Soviet Union pressed ahead with its ambitious industrialization program.
In the early 1930s over 91% of agricultural land became collectivized as rural households entered collective farms with their land, livestock, and other assets. The sweeping collectivization often involved tremendous human and social costs. Recent historians have estimated the death toll in the range of six to 13 million.

Michael Strogoff (Dramatic Reading)
Jules VERNE (1828 - 1905)
At a fete in the New Palace, the court seems to be in perfect order. Only two people know the truth: the telegraph wire beyond Tomsk, connecting Western Russia with Siberia, has been cut! The Czar and General Kissoff can tell that it is the work of traitorous Ivan Ogareff, who is inciting an insurrection in Siberia. If the Grand Duke, governing Siberia from Irkutsk, does not hear of the insurrection in time, the criminals in Siberia will take over the city, and eventually, all of Russia! Only a brave and fast courier can take it to the Duke in time. The general assures the czar that he has the perfect courier--Michael Strogoff. He will have to travel in disguise to escape the traps set by Ivan Ogareff, and above all never reveal--He is the courier of the czar! (Summary by Esther ben Simonides)
