Japan: 'Marines out!' Protesters picket US military base over relocation project
Protesters picketed Camp Schwab US Marine Base near Nago City, Thursday, as rallies against the relocation of the US Marine Corps Futenma Air Station to the area continue.
Demonstrators chanted slogans against the plans and held placards decrying the US military presence as they lined the road leading to the marine base in Henoko.
Over the next five years, a new facility will be built in the waters off the coast from Camp Schwab as part of the relocation of the Futenma Air Station to the Henoko area on the island of Okinawa. The move has been received with continuous opposition from locals and Okinawa Governor Takeshi Onaga.
The protest comes after a resolution was passed by an Okinawa Prefectural Assembly committee on Tuesday demanding legal action against the base’s relocation. The entire assembly will vote on the issue on Friday, which could lead to legal action against Tokyo for pushing through the project.

The elements in this story are a bizarre transnational mix: a US air base, on Japanese land, an American soldier reportedly involved in a homicide, sightings of a Japanese samurai ghost. Adding to the mystery was the fact that the haunted house in question, a military residence, wasn't even where it was supposed to be. It seems a thread must run through all these, a thread hidden from all but the most persistent of investigators.

A Day on the Streets of Nago Dec 1986
From the cars to the hair styles; the clothing to the sidewalk video games, this is definitely a flash back to the 1980s on Okinawa.
On this day we traveled up Rte 329 from Camp Hansen to Camp Schwab then into Nago for a day of shopping and exploration. It had been 11 or 12 years since we'd been in this picturesque city on the East China Sea. We hadn't noticed until we were coming back to get our van that the parking lot we chose was situated beneath the famous Gajumaru!

Japan: Police remove protesters during sit-in outside US base in Okinawa

Scores of protesters staged a sit-in outside Camp Schwab in Okinawa's city of Nago on Thursday, to protest against the relocation of the new US Marine Corps Futenma Air Station.
The rally comes as demonstrators call for a referendum on the government's relocation plan for the US base, to be held on February 24.
Protesters tried to block the passage of construction vehicles heading to the construction site of the new base. The protest remained largely peaceful; however police officers removed some of those obstructing the trucks.
The move prompted strong reactions from the local governor and community, who believe that Okinawa is over-burdened with an excess of military bases, and that other areas of Japan should share the responsibility.
