154: Turning Straw into Gold | Apple Falls Cider Company
Matt Oskamp and Amelia Campbell started Apple Falls Cider Company in 2017. The cider house is situated alongside the farm store at Campbell Orchards located in Prince Edward County, Ontario. Campbell Orchards is owned by Amelia’s parents Colin and Dianne Campbell.
When Colin’s father died due to a plane crash, he took on the orchard that was started by his father. That was back in the late seventies when Colin was just in college. Today the orchard and farm stand is a testament of love and perseverance. There is a cider garden outdoors from the tasting room with ample seating at picnic tables. This is a family friendly scene where you can also stop and pick up a pie or meats on your way home from work.

An iconic canadian architectural monument perched upon a sprawling 67-acre oceanfront parcel at the southern end of Vancouver Island, minutes from British Columbia’s capital, Victoria. Punctuated by grand contemporary lines, the triumphant main residence is, according to it’s award-winning designer, Marko Simcic, “sustainably entwined” with its site in the heart of one of Canada’s most endangered natural ecosystems—the Garry Oak savannah.
Winner of the Canadian Architect Award in 2003 and a Lieutenant-Governor’s Award in 2008,
the 10,700 square foot main residence is cantilevered atop a concrete armature, rooting the structure clear of the critical tree root zones. With floors branching astride a canyon carrying spent hydro-thermal seawater framed by etched glass exterior walls, this innovative retreat blurs the boundaries of nature and shelter.
A sharp structural fold encloses an exterior pool and hot tub area which separates the social and private living spaces. Dynamically lit by strategically placed exterior and foot windows, reflections from the ocean and canyon river dance across hardwood floors and travertine walls. Panoramic views of 1,400 linear feet of shoreline and private beach are amplified by spectacular ocean views backed by the rugged Olympic Mountain range, while a fully automated boat launch and worldwide access to mechanical and electrical controls allow residents to remain connected while escaping to the sea with ease. Also Included on the gated property is a caretakers residence, garage with hydraulic lift, and tennis/basketball court.
Metchosin is a semi-rural community of rolling countryside laced with winding rural roads traversing cultivated acreages, rocky highlands, and forests along the shores of the Juan de Fuca Strait. This area is home to many migratory birds and teems with land and sea life. Nearby parks include Albert Head Lagoon, Witty’s Lagoon, Devonian Regional park, Matheson Lake Regional Park, Roche Cove Regional Park, and East Sooke Park. By imposing a minimum one and two acre lot size bylaw, urban style development has been limited by the local government in order to preserve the area’s pastoral character.
Nearby activities include golf at the Metchosin Golf Course, the Olympic View Golf Club, or one of 8 championship golf courses scattered about Victoria’s Capital Regional District, as well as equestrian facilities at one of a number of Metchosin clubs, or rides along the famous Galloping Goose Trail. This 100 kilometer multi-use trail links the Westshore communities of Sooke, Metchosin, Colwood, Langford, and View Royal to Victoria proper, offering cyclists, joggers, hikers, and riders a route through the the countryside to the city.
Surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, the Strait of Georgia and the Inside Passage, Vancouver Island is one of Canada’s finest island getaways. With its vast wilderness, picturesque peaks, temperate climate and fertile soil, this stunning locale is a paradise for those seeking serenity, natural beauty, and enchanting coastal communities.
Unlike much of Canada, Vancouver Island's weather is mild year-round. Spring comes early, with cherry blossom, tulip, and daffodil blooms lit by sparkling ocean sunsets. Summer is close behind, with the first sightings of migrating whales and local fishermen. In fall, a plethora of farms, vineyards, orchards, cideries, and breweries take local culinary culture to world-class levels. Come winter, cars loaded with kayaks, surfboards, paddle boards, skis, and snowboards come out to play, while golfers teeing off, and joggers taking to the trails remain common sights.
My Thoughts on Migratory Commercial Beekeeping
After 1 month of working for a migratory (moving bees from one location to another to follow pollination contracts or honey flows across country) commercial beekeeping operation, I give my personal thoughts on it as it pertains to my own personal situation.

NS's 36A roaring upgrade with John Deere tractors.
Gotta love the sound of engines fighting the grade on Norfolk Southern's Pittsburgh Line and the Western Slope. As my trip came to an end I was hoping to catch some Deere tractors on a train as one who owns some and to my luck the last train in 36A had two cuts and I caught in two places. The first place was at Cassandra as the train was working hard upgrade with two helpers on the head end and then cresting the summit at Gallitzin and slowly descending downhill heading towards the world famous Horseshoe Curve on March 10, 2008.

Why Are American Beekeepers Losing 40-50% Of Their Bees?
Regardless of the bumper crops hobbyist beekeepers boast about and random pockets where bees appear to be thriving, the fact is American honey bees and other pollinators are in serious trouble. Although each administration makes an attempt to do something to help protect our pollinators, we have a long way to go before we can even think about following in the footsteps of the EU and pass a ban on neonicotinoids.
Recently, the Congressional Pollinator Protection Caucus was held in Washington, DC. Mr. Tim May, President of the American Beekeeping Federation attended and has some interesting facts to share. In this segment of The Neonicotinoid View Radio Show, bee health advocates, June Stoyer and Tom Theobald talk to Tim May about this briefing. Mr. May will also share his views about how American beekeepers are faring, despite confusing statistics from USDA.

RBC Christmas 2011
Viscuña Brothers teamed up with McCann Erickson Trinidad to produce RBC Bank's Christmas television commercial. The pre-production of this ad took longer than production and post production put together. Several changes were made to the script before the client's final approval - we saw at least three versions before production started. Believe it or not we made more changes to the ad on the day of shooting.

Step By Step's 8th CAMPAIGN
Torch Of Life
April 14, 2010 -
TORCH OF LIFE
On April 14, 2010 in Washington DC, George completed 25% of Step by Step's 7th Campaign SOSTheAmericas. The bank was taking his house & George had to abandon his dream of bringing the Torch through 35 countries to Argentina. Ironically this happened at Pope John Paul 2 Cultural Centre. Throughout the rest of 2010, George desperately tried to raise the funds & resources to continue the campaign but time & time again was unsuccessful, and accomplished smaller activities in Toronto.
In January 2011, George went to his friend Lorenzo home in Vancouver BC. Something remarkable happened, that indirectly set off an amazing series of events. In December 2010 George agreed to walk for Sickle Cell Disease from Ottawa to Toronto in the dead cold month of February 2011, and in January 2011 witnessed on TV the tragic shooting of Christina Green. George had a vision, that her organs were donated & expressed this to his friend Alex Roman, the next day. A week later Lorenzo sent George a news clip that Christina's organs were donated. George rushed to Vancouver, and shared this astounding vision with Lorenzo.
February 1, 2011, immediately after George's visit with Lorenzo, he began walking from Ottawa to Toronto, a 500 km walk. Many people were asking why a white guy was walking for what was known as a Black disease. George answered, that he didn't see colour. In the painful walk, George was hoping to see a premonition.
On March 5 2011, after finishing the walk, George receives a call from Phoenix AZ to bring the Torch of Life to lead a march to Governor Brewer's office. The Governor had taken 100 people off the waiting list for organs in Arizona & 2 had died, so this was called the Arizona 98. George thought this was also a calling to meet the Green family who lived in Tucson AZ. George had to cancel the plan to travel to Tucson and flew back to Toronto after a very successful march in Phoenix.
April 13 2011, After painfully walking for Sickle Cell, and risking himself into a dangerous situation with Arizona authorities for the Arizona 98,Throughout the year, countless efforts were made to resume the campaign in Washington DC, but to no avail. It was disappointment after disappointment. Couuld this journey be coming to an end. This brought tears to George Marcello as he looked at the Torch & started reflecting back to the first Step.
April 17 2011, George was checking his emails and noticed in one email, that a
young male Afghanistan student from McGill Univrsity was asking
George for advice to walk from Ottawa to Toronto. He wanted to walk
to show his gatitude to Canada. In another email a young female
Pakistan student from McMaster University was asking George for
help in saving her dad who needed a liver transplant. This felt like a good omen for George to ask Shaheem Joya (the McGill student) if he would walk for the young girl's dad and for Step By Step.
Shaheem agreed & during his walk he contacted George every day. Shaheem woke something up in George. After completing the walk George shared with Shaheem the story about Ismail Khatib and how deeply it affected him. George was compelled to invite the father, Ismael Khatib to Canada to honour Ahmed with the Torch of Life.
May 31 2011, George & Shaheem make contact with Ismail Khatib
Aug 1 2011 - George contacts world famous Donor Dad Reg Green and arranges to bring him to Toronto in Sept 2011 to honour his son Nicholas Green with the Torch of Life. This is after a failed attempt to do this with Vatican City
Sept 5 2011, Reg Green carries Torch Of Life in Nicholas memory through Little Italy in the heart of Toronto
Oct 2 2011 Ismail Khatib confirms that his VISA is accepted, and will be arriving to Toronto with his son Khaled on Oct 28 11
Oct 6 11, George arranges for Reg Green & Ismail to talk to each other through SKYPE
Oct 29 11 Ismail Khatib & Reg Green meet at Toronto Airport
Oct 31 2011 The Donor Dads carry the Torch Of Life through Toronto and 5 other major cities in the next 10 days
Jan 26 2012, Khaled Khatib meets Helene Campbell at Toronto Sick Kids Hospital, and promises he will carry the Torch Of Life for her through 72 cities & towns in Ontario
This campaign was call Register Now Ontario
Mar 5-Jun 19 2012 Khaled begins carrying Torch of Life in Kenora for Helene & in memory of Mrs Betty Albreht. On his final day in Toronto, June 19 2012, Israeli girl Yael Gladstone and Helene meet Khaled & together they carry the Torch to the finish line.
Feb 3 2013, Khaled carries Torch from Ottawa to Toronto for his friend Anthony Socci who needs a kidney transplant. Anthony is Jewish
Apr 1-30 13 Torch is carried for Kayla Baker in Toronto
Oct 4 13 - Reg Green & Khaled Khatib carry Torch Of Life through Vancouver BC
Dec 12 13 - George tries to help Anthony Socci & Mary Giavedoni receive her liver, this indeed might be the end of his journey
more will be revealed
