Fishing BC Presents: The Legendary Waters of Campbell River, BC
“Campbell River is the birthplace of guided sport fishing on B.C.’s west coast”, says Gene Berkey of Sea Beyond Adventures. Fishing tourism has long been fueled by the writing of people like Haig-Brown, painting a picture of British Columbia through his words that is rich in both authenticity and adventure.
Many are familiar with names such as Tyee Pool, a tidal area that lies adjacent to Campbell River itself, famous for giant Chinook salmon. But this does not take away from the abundant runs of both salmon and steelhead that are available year-round within a short drive of town.
“He was an avid fly fisherman, especially in his younger days and wrote extensively about fishing rivers” says Ericka Anderson from inside the walls of the Haig-Brown house, describing Roderick’s ability to marry the synchronicities between fly fishing and the written word.
“Without the spirit of man, there could be no wonders”, though Roderick Haig-Brown may have left the physical world long ago, his writing will continue to inspire anglers and bring new faces to British Columbia’s sport fishing realm.

Fishing BC Presents: Campbell River with Coastal Wilderness Adventures
Nestled on the protected inside passage of Georgia Strait, on the east side of Vancouver Island, Campbell River is home to some of the largest runs of passing salmon to be found anywhere on B.C.’s coast. Uniquely situated to intercept all 5 species as they migrate home, this area allows consistent fisheries for each species. Famously, the location is prime for big chinook salmon, as these ocean kings gather here to feed on bait fish all spring and summer before making their trek home.
Curtis Smith is a certified tidal angling guide and owner of Coastal Wilderness Adventures. He has spent years searching for the best methods and the best waters in and around Campbell River, to be able to share this collective knowledge, passion for sportfishing and commitment to conservation with his clients.
Campbell River is well-known as the ‘Salmon Capital of the World’ and home to the famous Tyee Club where there’s always the potential to land a 30+ pound chinook salmon known as a “Tyee,” which means “The Chief” or “Great Leader” in coastal First Nations language.
Having the conveniences and amenities available in Campbell River in such close proximity to calm water and wild, remote fishing grounds only minutes outside the city, this area offers something for all anglers, any time of year.

24 hours in CAMPBELL RIVER, BC What is there to do?
I had 24 hours to see as much as possible of Campbell River. These were my favorite highlights and recommendations of where to stay, visit and shop in Campbell River, British Columbia, Canada.
Campbell River is located on Vancouver Island and about a 4 to 5 hour drive from Vancouver including a BC Ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver to Departure Bay in Nanaimo, BC.
Campbell River is know for it's fishing, camping, whale watching and all things outdoors so I started by visiting it's most famous tourist attraction Elk Falls Provincial Park. Elk Falls Provincial Park has a number of hiking trails but without question the highlight is the waterfall and the Elk Falls Suspension Bridge. The suspension bridge was build in 2015 and is already one of your must stop visits when visiting Campbell River.
Our next stop was Shelter Point Distillery. Shelter Point Distillery is located just south of downtown Campbell River but a must visit if you're in the area. They offer free tours of the distillery along with a wide range of spirits to taste and purchase. Be sure to check times and hours of operations before visiting.
Echo lake in Campbell River was somewhere we just happened to stumble across. I was hoping to visit Upper Campbell Lake but it was just to far for our 24 hour visit of Campbell River. Echo Lake was right beside the highway, I good spot to pull over and enjoy nature.
While there's a ton of options to choose from if you're camping in Campbell River we stayed at the Quinsam Campground at Elk Falls Provincial Park. The Elk Falls Campground is located just off the highway, 5 minutes to downtown Campbell River and a 5 minute drive to the Elk Falls parking lot. If you get a campsite right on the
river it's gorgeous but all the campsite are very private and large so you can't go wrong with any of the campsites.
