You NEED to visit Campeche Mexico!
Don't skip this city if you're visiting the Yucatan Peninsula! It is absolutely charming and a must-see. We loved spending a few days here enjoying the history, the culture, the beautiful boardwalk.
Inside the walled part of the city feels magical with vibrant colors and gorgeous architecture. There is a lot to do and see in and around the city and even more to eat!
And you can't miss the sunset--it is spectacular!

About Us: We're a couple from the USA that was tired of spending our days in windowless offices feeling like we weren't living life to the fullest. We went to visit Mexico a couple of times and decided we loved the weather, the people, the culture, and the relative affordability. So we decided to make it our home. We sold most of our belongings, our 3-bedroom house in Denver, and packed up our bags for Mexico. Thanks for following our journey as we navigate through our new country we call home!

Campeche Mexico... Salsa on the streets.
Campeche, a Mexican state in the Yucatan Peninsula.
Overland: Yucatan pt. 3
overlandtravelvideos.com We made it out of the Jungle and continued west on Mex Hwy 186 and spent the night in Sabancuy, a small fishing village on the gulf of Mexico. Going north we stopped for a swim and looked for shells at Playa Varadero and finally ended up in the capital city of Campeche. Campeche is an Unesco listed world heritage site with over 2000 restored buildings and a history of Pirates! A walled city with Baluartes (towers) a wonderful Malecon (waterfront Promenade) and numerous colonial buildings such as the Mansion Carvajal. We stayed at a fabulous hotel Hotel Colonial and had lunch at Salon Rincon Colonial which until recently was a male only bar. Going north we stopped at the small town of Hecelchakan to try a local specialty of Cochinita Pibil and Relleno Negro, we love street food! Finally ending up in Becal where about one third of the adult population makes their living from the weaving of Jipi Japa hats. The hat 'factories' are found underground in peoples back yards and you have to just show up and ask one of the bike taxi's to take you to a shop.
Isla Aguada, Campeche Real Estate
Visit our website for more details on
The village of Isla Aguada is just across a long bridge connecting to a narrow peninsula to a long island, on which a short drive brings you to Ciudad del Carmen, the state of Campeche's second city after the capital, also called Campeche.
Isla Aguada is still a fishing village, with picturesque old docks where fishermen still moor their boats, not far from some newer yachts. Relaxing walks on beachfront walkways, under the shade of large trees defines life in this town. With quaint, Mexican homes and a traditional lifestyle defined by the relaxation Mexico is known for, Isla is still virtually undiscovered by the world of international tourism and real estate.
While it is still undiscovered, it is less than an hour away from the action, where the Campeche real estate market and tourism industry are beginning to take off. A bit over an hour north is the city of Campeche with its completely restored historic center, surrounded by an old fort wall, and including many buildings dating back to colonial times.
A bit less than an hour there is a new golf course and marina development, where condos are selling for about $500,000 USD. Only 35 minutes away, the beachfront actually becomes wider, and lots on virgin beaches are being sold for only $65,000!

5K City Walks: Valladolid Mexico - Colonial City in the Yucatan virtual treadmill walk
We stopped in the city of Valladolid, Mexico and we were glad we did. It's a charming little city with lots of history and very affordable. There are several mayan ruins in the area and cenotes as well.
Valladolid is a city on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. Its colonial buildings include 16th-century Convent of San Bernardino of Siena, with an ornate wooden altarpiece, and baroque-style San Gervasio Cathedral. Casa de los Venados has Mexican folk art and furnishings. Cenote Zací is a sinkhole pool with stalactites. The underground cenotes of Samulá and X'Kekén lie southwest. Farther west is the Mayan site Chichén Itzá.

Yes, if it rains there are colonies (areas) where the drainage system can't take all the water and they start to flood, if the water level rises.
(Question: Will there be flooding?)
Yes, and we have to leave if it does. There is no other option. We are not going to drown there

STORYLINE
Hurricane Dean's roared into Mexico's mainland on Wednesday with 100 miles per hour (160 kilometres per hour) winds as thousands fled to shelters.
The US National Hurricane Center in Miami said the storm's eye moved ashore shortly before 12 noon (1700 GMT) near the small port city of Tecolutla on the central Gulf coast.
Civil defence workers had already joined troops in moving residents on army trucks to inland shelters.
Dean strengthened to a Category 2 hurricane before making landfall, with its outer bands buffeting the coast of Veracruz state.
Faced with the possibility of heavy flooding in the Veracruz area, one resident told AP Television the only option was to leave.
There is no other option, said Francisco Cordoba, We are not going to drown there.
South of Veracruz state, the storm surge flooded Ciudad del Carmen, a city of 120-thousand people.
Dean swept across the Yucatan Peninsula on Tuesday as a ferocious Category 5 hurricane, toppling trees, power lines and houses, but sparing glitzy resorts on the Mayan Riviera.
Officials said they had received no reports of deaths in the Yucatan Peninsula, though driving rain, poor communications and impassable roads made it difficult to determine how isolated Mayan communities fared in the sparsely populated jungle.
Dean killed 13 people in the Caribbean as it travelled through the region.
Greatly weakened as it passed over Yucatan, Dean moved across the Bay of Campeche in the southern Gulf of Mexico, home to more than 100 oil platforms, three major oil exporting ports and the Cantarell oil field, Mexico's most productive.
Laguna Verde, Mexico's only nuclear power plant, suspended production.
Dean became the third most intense Atlantic hurricane to make landfall in recorded history when it smashed into the Yucatan Peninsula on Tuesday.

Backpackers trip in Central America
All people can be divided into two groups: some spend their entire lives where they were born, while others wander the world in search of the best places. Thousands of people over many centuries have left their homes and set off on a journey to discover new lands and continents.
The study, mastering and enslavement of America began with the Caribbean Islands — and accidentally brought the caravels of Columbus there. Then they moved a little further West and hit the continent in this area of Central America and Mexico.
This area will be the purpose of the next stage of the project World without visa. In this route, I have included Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico.
To travel around Central America is very dangerous. It is one of the region of the world that is most populated with gangsters. Here tourists are not only victims of pick-pocketting but are also robbed. The vast majority of bandits are armed with firearms and they do not hesitate to use them.
But this region has so much to offer, that it is worth the risk. The ruins of Mayan cities hiding in the deep jungle, active volcanoes, the white sandy beaches of the Caribbean sea, and the architectural gems of colonial Mexico and Guatemala.
