COLOMBIA: COFFEE PLANTATIONS HIT BY RECENT EARTHQUAKES

The devastating earthquake in western Colombia has caused extensive damage to the regions gourmet coffee plantations.
The quake, which measured 6.0 on the Richter scale has left more than 940 people dead and over 4,000 injured across five provinces.
Aid workers now fear the spread of disease as lack of food and water take their toll on the 250,000 people left homeless by the tremor.
Western Colombia is home to many of the country's rich coffee plantations.
Here in Calarca, 15 kilometres from the worst hit city of Armenia, the damage has been extensive.
What until Monday was a bustling coffee business now lies deserted.
Workers have lost their homes.
Others are busy looking for loved ones as 3,000 people are still missing in the region.
For Carlos Alberto Sierra, the earthquake has been devastating, and it is difficult to tell how long it will take to get the backbone of the Colombian economy back into operation.

After the earthquake on Monday everyone stopped what they were doing, they stopped working. They all ran back to their houses. Everyone was running around, looking for their loved ones. People were running all over the place, from here to there. Work was paralyzed.

With no electricity the few machines that still work lie dormant.
60 acres of coffee beans lie unpicked.

Everything has been paralyzed since. There is no electricity, no water. Buildings are damaged. Houses have fallen down. There's nothing we can do.

Sierra's plantation is just one of hundreds in the area.
But his is not the only sad story.
The death toll in the region is now over 900, but it is expected to rise considerably.
In Armenia lines form on street corners as doctors give vaccinations to halt the possible spread of disease.
Over 200 thousand are homeless in this city alone.
They used to call Armenia Colombia's Miracle City.
Now it lies in ruins, crumbling under Colombia's worst natural disaster in 14 years.
The government has promised some 315 (m) million U-S dollars for relief aid and initial rebuilding.
But like the food supplies, that sum could fall far short of what is really needed.

Jamming for Janet: Fundraiser for San Benito Girl Fighting for Life
Janet Mata, 19, can be simply described as inspirational. The San Benito girl was diagnosed with a rare muscle disease known as Dermatomyositis when she was about four years old.
It's incurable and recently doctors told her she had about two years left to live. Despite the grim prognosis, Mata has not lost her positive attitude.
You just have to find something that you love in life, Mata said. I love my family I love (my dog) - you know even though you're sick, you are capable of loving and not just being mad at the whole world.
It's this won't give up outlook that has inspired Mata's fellow San Benito High School graduates to organize a benefit fundraiser in her honor.
Stacey Lee Gonzalez said the Jamming for Janet event will be held March 17th at the San Benito Resaca trail, and will feature a competitive 5K run, commemorative walk and live bands.
It just goes to show how much of a support base there is, not only for Janet, but for other families and individuals that are facing hardships, or are facing life threatening diseases, and that are trying to overcome their own personal obstacles, Gonzalez said.
Mata wants to donate the proceeds to Driscoll Children's Hospital in Corpus Christi - a place where she's spent much of her time fighting to survive and a place she said gives many children hope and a chance at life.
I know how it is to live with a disease your whole life, Mata said. I don't wish it on anybody else, I don't wish it not even on the adults. I don't want the kids to go through that - any kid - it's really hard to live with it and to accept it.
Mata said the fight is tough and there are days of weakness and frustration, but it's the support from people like Gonzalez that keep her pushing forth.
I have a beautiful feeling that I get, Mata said. (I) get to feel (San Benito's) support - that they're actually willing to help not only me, but other kids that are sick.
Organizers have started a Facebook page for people who want to sign up for the event or make donations. Registration fee before March 9 is $15, and $20 after that.
