Cana of Galilee, Where Jesus Turned Water Into Wine
A tour in the Cana of Galilee where Jesus began His ministry by turning water into wine.
Season 1, Episode 9
Cana (Kafr, Kanna) Wedding Church, Jesus Turns Water to Wine, John 2:1-11, Jesus Heals, John 4:46-54
See the miracles and biblical events that happened at this special place! Christ turned water into wine here, an official's son was healed close-by, and Nathaniel, one of the apostles was from Cana as well. See the Bible come to life as you see the context where it all took place.
Cana is in the northern part of Israel in the Lower Galilee area. It’s about 11 miles (17 km.) southwest of the Sea of Galilee, about 4 miles (6.4 km.) northeast of Nazareth, and about 22 miles (35 km.) inland from the Mediterranean Sea.
1. Cana’s actual location is uncertain, with at least three possible candidates.
2. However, at the Wedding Church, the Franciscans have relied on the testimony of early pilgrims including Jerome. Therefore, they established themselves here in 1641.
3. The Franciscans also believe excavations beneath their present church, dating from the early 1900s, confirm the existence of an early place of worship. They believe it’s possible it was a Jewish-Christian synagogue.
4. Beneath the present Franciscan Wedding Church were found remains of dwellings dating back to the 1st century. An ancient basilica with three arch vaults in a cross-like form were also discovered. Additionally, in a crypt, a small stone cistern was found fitted into a flagstone floor.
5. Not far from the Wedding Church is the Greek Orthodox Church of the Marriage Feast. It possesses two large stone jars believed to be two of the original water pots used when Christ turned the water into wine.
6. The town also has a chapel dedicated to Bartholomew, whom some scholars identify with Nathanael of Cana

The miracle at the weeding at Kana by Jesus, which is considered as Jesus first miracle, is described at the Gospel of John and it is written here along the wall opposite the entrance to the church.
According to Christian tradition, the Franciscan Wedding church which we are visiting today marks the place of the wedding at Cana.
Each year on January 18 the Franciscan celebrate the first miracle by Jesus with a special solemn mass here at the Wedding church at Kana and we are here with them.
Now let’s enter the church.
This church is also dedicated to St. Bartholomeus, which was Jesus’ newest disciple at the time of the wedding and is identified by some scholars as Nathaniel from Canna of Galilee.
Over there behind the altar is a picture depicting the wedding and in front of the altar there are status of Jesus and Mary and off course jars symbolizing the miracle of Jesus by turning water into wine. This motive of ancient jars is spread throughout the church.
The church that we see today was built on the remaining of an old byzantine church. Here there is a fragment of a Byzantine mosaic dating from the 5th or 6th century which preserve the name of the donor in Aramaic – Pious Joseph son of Tanhum.
In memory of the pious Joseph, son of Tanhum, son of Bota and of his children who made this table, may it be for them a blessing, Amen”
Right next to the entrance of the church is an entrance to a museum which holds remaining of the first byzantine church and old jars founded in the area. One jar is said to be one of the six jars used for the miracle.
Over there is the area were the old byzantine church used to stand……… and as you can see some remaining of that church are still here.
Over there is where according to tradition the actual wedding took place…… and this is a replica of an ancient water jar from that period. See how people leave notes with prayer to god.
As we exit the church we shall get to a beautiful garden with motives from the weeding.
Every year on January 18th right at the end of the Solemn mass a big feast is taking place here in the garden with many guest from around the area…. Including our team.

EP.09: We were leaving Jerusalem and heading to Mount Carmel and Nazareth before going to Cana.
MOUNT CARMEL
The prophet Elijah’s fire-lighting challenge — one of the Old Testament’s most spectacular contests between Yahweh, the God of the Israelites, and a pagan deity — took place on the south-eastern summit of Mount Carmel.
NAZARETH
It became the home town of Jesus, Mary and her husband Joseph after the Holy Family returned from fleeing to Egypt to escape Herod the Great’s soldiers.
CHURCH OF THE ANNUNCIATION
Located in Nazareth, Its cupola, surmounted by a lantern symbolising the Light of the World, stands directly over a cave in the crypt that is traditionally held to be the home of the Virgin Mary. Here, it is believed, the archangel Gabriel told Mary she would become the mother of the Son of God.
CHURCH OF ST.JOSEPH
Next to the Church of the Annunciation, on the northern side, is the Church of St Joseph (also known as the Church of the Nutrition and Joseph’s Workshop). It's traditionally believed to be the house of the Holy family.
CANA
Cana in Galilee is celebrated as the scene of Jesus’ first miracle by turning water into wine. (John 2:1-11)
