WEEKEND ITINERARY in ST. THOMAS, ONTARIO!
Plan the ultimate weekend getaway to St. Thomas, Ontario with this 2-day itinerary! Located about a 20-minute drive south of London, Ontario, St. Thomas was founded in 1881 and was an important railway junction. Its location made it the primary stop along the Canadian shortcut between Detroit and Buffalo, and grew to see 26 railways pass through during the 19th and 20th century, thus earning the name Railway Capital of Canada.
Today, the trains no longer pass through St. Thomas but its railway heritage is woven into the culture of the city and is proudly on display. From historic buildings to green spaces, friends, families, and especially railway aficionados will all enjoy a weekend visit.

Canada Southern Rail Station, St Thomas Ontario
Here is a video of our visit in July 2018 to the Canada Southern Railway Station in St Thomas Ontario. Nice to see an historic building like this preserved. If the walls could talk I am sure there are many stories in this building. All Photos in this video I took at the train station. It is an interesting building with artifacts displayed throughout the station.

Here is a quick walk through of the Canada Southern Railway Station I recorded last week.. Please keep in mind this is only PART 2.
St Thomas City Railway Capital Of Canada 2019
St Thomas City Railway Capital Of Canada 2019 located in Southwestern Ontario Canada. St Thomas was an important railway city, employing the majority of it's citizens in the late 1800's in the railway industry. There are many railway lines in the St Thomas and at it's peak was a stop on a shortcut railway line between Detroit and Buffalo. The Massive Canada Southern Railway Station (CASO) is a remaining testament to the importance of St Thomas as a railway city and transport hub.
St Thomas is also home to some wonderful Victorian architecture a legacy from the wealth that the railway brought to St Thomas. Notable buildings include the City Hall, Courthouse and the Old Railway Station.
Barnum and Baileys star attraction Jumbo The Elephant was tragically killed by a train in 1885, a monument to Jumbo has been built in St Thomas a life size statue of Jumbo.
St Thomas has wonderful murals depicting the history of the city, many show the railway heritage with images of steam trains on the side of buildings throughout St Thomas.

Port Stanley Terminal Rail at the Canada Southern (CASO) Station in St. Thomas ON
Fun fact, I had no idea that this train was even coming. I just so happened to be in the right place at the right time.
Definitely a rare sight. This station barely ever sees trains anymore.

Trainz 2019 - CSX R321 Approaching St. Thomas, Ontario on the Canada Southern Railway
Made with Trainz Railroad Simulator 2019
Content from JointedRail and the DLS.
Chessie Geep patch done by me.
CSXT Train R321 cruises over Lyle Road (Formerly Payne Mill Road) and Blind Line. R321 was a CSX freight train that used to run on the CN CASO Subdivision from Windsor, Ontario to Buffalo, New York. Sadly these trains are no more as the track is now gone, and only memories remain. If you visit Lyle Road today all you’ll see is a scar on the landscape of what was once this powerful railroad.
I am in the process of creating a Trainz route that goes from St. Thomas, Ontario to Windsor, Ontario. This route will show the western portion of the CASO in its heyday.
Stay tuned, more to come.

PSTR Tourist Train Arrives into CASO station. *Rare* Cab view May 2019
Port Stanley Terminal Rail operates their Mother’s Day excursion trains into St. Thomas as hogger Larry Broadbent brings the train up the old C&O/L&PS tracks and pulls onto what little is left of the CN CASO Sub ex NYC nee MCRR Canada Southern Railway. Flagman Mike holds traffic at Ross st as the train pulls into the CASO St Thomas depot. CN abandoned the CASO sub St Thomas - Fargo in 2006. The tracks were pulled in 2009. The CASO was once the finest double mainline in southern Ontario, now it is all gone with the exception of less than a mile in St Thomas, windsor and welland. In a few months marks the 10 year anniversary of the demise of the St. Thomas trackage.
Thanks to Larry for the sweet cabride

St Thomas Elevated Park on Old Railway Line | Ontario, Canada
We finally visited the new St. Thomas Elevated Park in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada. It's a community project that will take years to complete (funded by public donations) and so far it's gorgeous.
Built on the site of former railway tracks and a rail bridge over Kettle Creek valley, it's a beautiful site.
My main interest was seeing the garden plants which are native wildflowers attractive to all sorts of pollinators. This is my favourite type of garden: it's sustainable, low-maintenance, reminds me of the beauty of Ontario, and feels like home.
There are several pieces of art in the park. My favourites are the giant weathervane, called Fear not the Wind, situated in the middle of the bridge and visible from the road below. At the entry, there is a railway-themed piece called Mixed Signals (shown near the end of the video). Both are by artist Scott McKay (I'm a fan).
As you'll see in the video, the view from the bridge is spectacular. I know I'm gushing, but it really is a lovely area and the whole thing is a brilliant project. This will be a beloved place to visit and hike for years to come.
