A Rota das Cachoeiras, em Corupá, no Norte de Santa Catarina, tem 14 quedas d´água em uma área de 1.156 hectares. Na região há a ocorrência da Floresta das Araucárias e da Mata Atlântica e no parque já foram catalogadas mais de 190 espécies de plantas, sendo algumas ameaçadas de extinção, como a Canela Preta, que leva cerca de 100 anos para estar pronta para se reproduzir. As cachoeiras, abastecidas pelo Rio Novo, ficam dentro da Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural (RPPN) Emílio Fiorentino Battistella.

O nome Corupá, em língua indígena, significa 'lugar de muitas pedras'. Fundada em 1897 por colonizadores alemães, italianos e poloneses, chamou-se inicialmente Hansa Humboldt em homenagem ao alemão Alexandre Von Humboldt. Em 1958 foi desmembrado de Jaraguá do Sul e conquistou a emancipação política.
O trajeto das quedas é feito por trilhas, segundo informações do Portal de Turismo da cidade. A Trilha Passa-Águas, que contorna o rio, permite a caminhada próximo às águas, tem extensão de 2.900 metros e tempo de percurso aproximado em 3h30, ida e volta.

A 14ª cachoeira, conhecida como Salto Grande, tem 125 metros de altura, sendo a maior das 14 da rota. O número de visitantes diários do parque chega a 1.500 na alta temporada. Por causa dos cortes dos rios, há tipos de vegetação bem específicios, formando mini-ecossistemas. A água conserva a floresta e a floresta conserva a água, explica o biólogo Ademir Reis.
Entre os animais existentes na reserva estão o sabiá, o tucano-de-bico-verde, o macaco-prego e o bugio-ruivo. Ao todo, segundo a bióloga Tatiane Aparecida Batista, são 380 espécies de aves e 40 espécies de mamíferos catalogados. Porém, segundo ela, com certeza existem outros animais na região.
Além da importância ecológica, a água forma um reservatório orgânico, servindo como uma caixa d’água e se tornando um filtro natural para as sete cidades do Vale do Itapocu, que atende cerca de 400 mil pessoas. Cerca de 40% do abastecimento das cidades vem deste rio. A água é bastante limpa e de qualidade, explica o administrador da RPPN Reinaldo Langa.
