Ewan goes to the Cango Caves in Oudtshoorn
What is your great moment? If you won the Mitchum competition, where would you be jetting off to – from left to right, London, India, Paris, Hong Kong, New York or Thailand? And what would you be doing there – bungee jumping, skydiving, celebrating NYE, shopping, partying or proposing?
Cango Caves Estate Zipline 1
The first section of the zipline is 180 meters long and offers a most enjoyable ride.

The Cango Caves In South Africa
The cango caves were discovered in the 1700's by a farmworker who told his boss about his discovery. The caves were later used as a tourist attraction and people from all over the world still visit every year. The whole tour took about an hour and a half.

The second part of the zipline is close to 500 meters long. Depending on the strenght and direction of the wind you can go quite fast on this zipline!
Day at Wilgewandel in Oudtshoorn (Cango Caves) 720p
We spent an afternoon at Wilgewandel just outside Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape. Loads of activities, from pedal-powered buggies and donkey-cart rides to a zip-line across the dam and water slides.
I don't own the music on this video.

The future of the Cango Caves near Oudtshoorn
A public participation process has started to establish the future of the Cango Caves near Oudtshoorn in the Little Karoo.
A decision on which type of entity should manage this heritage site, is expected in December. This comes amid a forensic investigation into alleged financial mismanagement at the local municipality, which includes missing funds and supplier processes.

SOUTH AFRICA: CANGO CAVES RE-OPENED
English/Nat
One of South Africa's top ten tourists sites, the Cango Caves has been re-opened to the public after a 2 (m) million dollar upgrade.
The opening of the caves after more than 30 years of being closed was helped alonmg by a choir and a laser show.
The caves were home to humans some hundreds of thousands of years ago.
Along with its ostrich industry, the Cango Caves represent a life-blood of tourist money for Oudtshoorn, a
small town 450 kilometres west of Cape Town.
Now visitors to the caves will experience new educational facilities and a 100-seater auditorium among the improvements.
Tourists will be shown video material of the nearby caves of Cango Two and Three which have never been opened to the public.
SOUNDBITE: (in English)
Maintaining the caves is always difficult when you have a quarter of a million people and you also have to have a conservation policy, it's a difficult balance between presentation and preservation everywhere around the world. That's a major challenge of running a show cave.

APTN joined a small press group allowed to visit Cango Two otherwise known as the Wonder Cave - and experience some of what cave guides Luther Terreblanche and James Craig-Smith felt when they
discovered it back in 1972.
The curious guides were working in Cango One when they obtained special permission to explore further.
Working in their own time they chiselled a narrow channel through which a stream of air could be felt.
This they widened until they could squeeze and wriggle their way through the cutting and then lower themselves down a rope ladder into the first chamber.
Their first view of the abundance of delicate crystal creations among larger formations made them realise that their's was a discovery of major importance.
A decision was taken not to allow electric lighting in Cango Two and to try and limit visitors so as to avoid accidental damage.
The Wonder Cave is not as structurally stable as Cango One and has a very limited air supply.
The more one breathes in the cave, the more the air temperature and acidity increase, detrimentally affecting the cave system.
For this reason Cango Two must remain closed to all but acknowledged speleologists.
But these journalists were also lucky enough to view the amazing rock formations.

Cango Two. It's a little bit daunting at first because you don't know how far it's going to go. And then there's a lot of crawling around and I think if you're claustrophobic you wouldn't want to be here. But it's an unbelievable place to be, it's extremely beautiful and I wouldn't have missed it for anything.

We're very tired and dirty but it was well worth it for me.

The complete cave system does not end at Wonder Cave but continues further through an extremely difficult access hole and via a very narrow tunnel and an underground river before one reaches Cango Three.
The characteristics of each of the cave systems vary considerably.
Cango Three has a blue calcite ceiling.
The more recently discovered Cango Four is heavy with carbon dioxide.
It must still be fully explored and is likely to remain off limits to all but the most specialised scientists.

cango caves south africa
The Cango Caves are located in Precambrian limestones at the foothills of the Swartberg range near the town of Oudtshoorn, in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. The principal cave is one of the country's finest, best known, and most popular tourist caves, and attracts many visitors from overseas. Although the extensive system of tunnels and chambers go on for over four kilometres, only about a quarter of this is open to visitors, who may proceed into the cave only in groups supervised by a guide.

This was the biggest thrill of the entire cave. It literally felt like I was in a chimney, with a real possibility of getting stuck.
