Bodh Gaya is a religious site and place of pilgrimage associated with the Mahabodhi Temple Complex in Gaya district in the Indian state of Bihar. It is famous as it is the place where Gautama Buddha is said to have attained Enlightenment under what became known as the Bodhi Tree.

Famous food -
Gaya is also famous for its sweets and is the place of origination for a number of the same. The main sweets here are Enursa, Tilkut, Khaja, Lai and Kesariya peda all of which are exclusive to Bihar. Other Bihari dishes like Sattu ka roti, Litti-chokha, Pua, Marua ka roti, Chana Bhuja, Aaloo Kachalu etc. are also easily available here.

October to March is ideal for a visit according to the weather conditions, but tourists flock here throughout the year.
How to Reach Bodhgaya -
The nearest airport is at Gaya (17 km) with regular flights to and from multiple cities. Gaya also has the nearest railway station which is accessible by bus or three-wheel taxis. Regular bus service is also available from Varanasi, Nalanda, Rajgir and Kathmandu. Journey by car can be very rough, and it is advisable to avoid the Gaya Market area.

In 6 BC, Prince Siddhartha Gautama attained Supreme Enlightenment at this Holy place and became the Buddha.
In commemoration, Emperor Asoka set up the Vajrasana (Diamond Throne) of polished sandstone in 3 BC.
The Mahabodhi Temple was completed in AD 7th C (Gupta period).
In 1883 and in 1956, renovation was done.
Constructed of brick.
One of the oldest brick structures to have survived in eastern India.
Central tower rises to 55 meters
Surrounded by four smaller towers, constructed in the same style.
Ringed by stone railings, about two metres high.
Older railings made of sandstone (150 BC)
They have scenes such as Lakshmi, being bathed by elephants and Surya, the Hindu sun god, riding a chariot drawn by four horses.
Newer railings constructed from unpolished coarse granite-Gupta period (300--600 BC).
They have figures of stupas and garudas. Images of lotus flowers also appear commonly.
The gold-painted statue of Buddha in the shrine of the temple is made of black stone built by the Pala kings of Bengal. The Buddha is seen seated in the Bhumisparsa Mudra or the Earth touching posture.

The sacred Bodhi tree under which Prince Siddhartha Gautama attained Enlightenment on the full Moon day of Vaisakh Purnima (May month).
Vajrasana
Vajrasana (Diamond Throne) is the seat of the Buddha's Enlightenment. Built in the 3rd century B.C. by Emperor Asoka, it is made of red sand stone.
Animesha Lochana Chaitya
On the north east of the Mahabodhi Temple where the Buddha spent the second week in meditation.
Cankamana
The place where the Buddha spent the third week in meditation practicing the walking meditation, otherwise, called the Cankamana or the cloister walk.
Ratanaghara
The Ratanaghara (Jewel House) is the place where the Buddha spent the fourth week in meditation.
Ajapala Nigrodha Tree
The pillar marks the spot where the tree once stood where the Buddha spent the fifth week in meditation. From here, he delivered a discourse on the equality of mankind.
Muchalinda Sarovar
The place where the Buddha spent the sixth week in meditation after his Enlightenment. While the Buddha was in meditation, a severe thunder storm broke out and seeing the Buddha getting drenched, the snake king of the Lake called Muchalinda, protected the Buddha with his hood.
Rajayatna Tree
The tree under which the Buddha spent a week in meditation. Two merchants from Burma, Tapassu and Bhallika, took refuge in His teachings, 'Buddham Saranam Gachami, Dhammam Saranam Gachami'.

Bodh Gaya which is located in Gaya is one of the most important and sacred Buddhist pilgrimage center in the world. It’s known for 18th-century Vishnupad Mandir, a riverside temple with an octagonal shrine.

1. Mahabodhi Temple : The Mahabodhi Temple serves to be the main and most important attraction in Bodh Gaya. It was built in the 7th century, surrounding the Bodhi Tree that Buddha sat under whilst he attained enlightenment. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
2. Great Buddha Statue : This statue of Lord Buddha is the tallest in India and was instated by the XIV Dalai Lama in 1989. It is a meditating Buddha resting on a giant lotus, constructed using intricately carved sandstone and red granite.
3. Bodhi Tree : The Bodhi Tree, also known as Bo ,peepal tree, and arasa maram was a large and very old sacred fig tree located in Bodh Gaya, under which Siddhartha Gautama. Bodhi Tree is the tree that Lord Buddha meditated under before he could attain enlightenment. The original Bodhi tree may have been destroyed by many Kings, but the direct descendants flourish even today standing tall at 80 feet.
4. Thai Monastery : Well known for its curved roof covered with exquisite tiles of gold, the Thai Monastery houses a bronze statue of Buddha and another recently erected 25m high statue in the garden.The only Thai temple in India, Sloping and curved roof of the edifice is covered with golden tiles is an insignia of Thai architecture.
5. Royal Bhutan Monastery : Royal Bhutan Monastery appeals to the followers of Buddhism with its wonderful depictions of the life of Buddha. Bhutan kind constructed this monastery, which ranks amongst the majestic monasteries in the land. It houses a beautiful temple in which you can find 7 feet tall Buddha statue. The serene atmosphere makes it a wonderful place to meditate.
6. Muchalinda Lake : Muchalinda Lake is considered a sacred place for followers of Buddhism. It is said that while Buddha was into the sixth week of meditation by the side of Muchalinda Lake, a severe storm struck. Muchalinda, the snake king protected Buddha who was deep in meditation. The temple found here houses the sculpture of Buddha and the snake in the act of protecting the god.
7. Cankamana : A Located towards the northern side of the temple lies the pathway which was used by Buddha during Buddha's third week of meditation. It was at this spot that he practiced walking meditation which is also called Cankamana.
8. Vishnupad Temple : Located on Falgu River banks, Vishnupad temple is considered to be constructed on Lord Vishnu's footprints and hence the name. This ancient temple was reconstructed in the year 1787 by Indore's queen Rani Ahilya Bai. The footprint is 40 cms in length.
9. Surya Kund :- It is a major tourist attraction. It is located on the west side of the famous Vishnupad temple. Devotees believe that a holy dip in the pond gets rid them of their sins. Surya Kund becomes most visited place on Chhath when Sun God is worshiped and people from near by places come to take a dip in the Surya Kund.
10. Chinese Temple : Chinese temple is located near Mahabodhi temple. The temple is a pure influence of Chinese architecture. It was built by the government of China and Buddhist monks of China in the year 1945. 200-year-old Buddha statue found in the temple is said to be from China.
