FRANCE: CANNES FILM FESTIVAL: PARTIES
English/Nat
Partying and film-making have become synonymous with the world's glitziest film festival in Cannes which is celebrating its fiftieth year.
The hot-house atmosphere of Hollywood stars, movie moguls and industry players have made this annual cinema extravaganza the most celebrated event of its kind.
For the thousands who descend on this southern French resort each year - whether you're in the film industry or not - it's THE place to see and be seen.
The annual Cannes film festival is not just about cinema.
Rubbing shoulders with the right people and being seen in the trendiest places can prove a useful career boost - and for many the chance of their big break.
Throughout the festival, when you're not watching films it seems there's only one thing to do - and that's party!
It's no coincidence Cannes has come to be known as the glitziest, most fun-filled event of its kind.
But still, the movie-makers have to take the occasional break from the seemingly endless round of parties in order to do some work.
The notorious New York shock jock Howard Stern is in Cannes promoting the film Private Parts, which is based on his life.
In the film millionaire Stern joins forces with his radio colleagues - who all play themselves - to provide a fly-on-the-wall account of their daily antics in the studio.
Stern's controversial radio show has been a feature of the New York airwaves for several years, characterised by his outrageous interviews and abuse of listeners.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Yeah I'm having a good time, its been a lot of work I'm out here promoting the film talking about it endlessly and I'll keep talking about it. I know that audiences overseas will love this movie more than the Americans did. It's an outrageous story, it's the story of how I became the number one media attraction in America and it tells the story, it tells the truth and it's funny. I just came from a screening of the movie with French audiences and they were rolling in the aisles. I'm thrilled with the reaction.
SUPER CAPTION: Howard Stern, Disc-Jockey
In Cannes, every film has to have a party. The one thrown for L-A Confidential, the new film by director Curtis Hanson, was attended by Hollywood stars like Danny De Vito and Kim Basinger.
Basinger plays a high-class hooker in the film, based on a novel by James Ellroy.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I'm having a blast. This is Curtis Hanson's moment, he's made a wonderful adaptation of my book, I'm thrilled with it. It's my book certainly but it's something else. It's a work of art in its own regard. I'm very happy
SUPER CAPTION: James Ellroy, author of LA Confidential
And Kim Basinger was full or praise for the film's director too. .
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I'll tell you this, I think that Curtis Hanson is one of the great American film makers, I really do. I've worked with some great wonderful people from Blake Edwards to Robert Denton to Tim Burton to Adrian Line to Robert Altman, I mean I've worked with some really wonderful film makers. I love him, I'd work with him tomorrow morning, without even knowing what the script was. It was wonderful to see him make such a great piece of work.
SUPER CAPTION: Kim Basinger, Star of LA Confidential
The film, a darkly compelling vision of violence and corruption in fifties America, also stars De Vito as a tabloid journalist who will stop at nothing to get his story.
In the meantime the real De Vito just joined in the fun - along with all the other thousands who party the night away in Cannes.

Film critic Lisa Nesselson tells us about two films by US directors being shown in competition in Cannes. Loving, by Jeff Nichols, is the true story of an interracial couple who lived in the US state of Virginia at a time when interracial couples were forbidden by law. It has been very well received at Cannes. Meanwhile, Paterson, the latest Jim Jarmusch film, focuses on a bus driver with poetic talents.

Cinéma de la plage - Festival de Cannes 2016
14th of May 2016.
Book (Livre): French Riviera Tourist Guide (Guide touristique Côte d'Azur)
Bilingual English/French Book (Livre bilingue anglais/français)
French Riviera is one of the first modern resort areas. It began as a winter health resort at the end of the 18th century. With the arrival of the railway it became the playground and vacation spot of British, Russian, and other aristocrats, such as Queen Victoria and King Edward VII, when he was Prince of Wales. In the summer, it also played home to many members of the Rothschild family. In the first half of the 20th century, it was frequented by artists and writers, including Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Edith Wharton, Somerset Maugham, and Aldous Huxley, as well as wealthy Americans and Europeans. After World War II, it became a popular tourist destination and convention site. Many celebrities, such as Elton John and Brigitte Bardot, have homes in the region.
The French Riviera is a major yachting and cruising area with several marinas along its coast. According to the Côte d'Azur Economic Development Agency, each year the Riviera hosts 50% of the world's superyacht fleet, with 90% of all superyachts visiting the region's coast at least once in their lifetime.
As a tourist centre it benefits from 300 days of sunshine per year, 115 kilometres (71 mi) of coastline and beaches, 18 golf courses, 14 ski resorts and 3,000 restaurants.
Although the Riviera is famous for the glamour of St. Tropez, Monaco or the Cannes Film Festival, there are many other less well known attractions, such as the perched villages of Eze and Gourdon, the perfumeries of Grasse and the glass blowers of Biot, the potters in Vallauris. The Riviera has been the inspiration for many well-known artists such as Picasso and many of their works are on display in local museums and art galleries.
