Greg Shine - USS Shark and cannon talk - Cannon Beach, OR
shot and edited by: amy stocky
Greg Shine is the head historian at Fort Vancouver and a wealth of information on the USS Shark, and it's captain Lt. Howison who was at the helm when it sank on Clatsop Spit at the mouth of the Columbia River.
Mr. Shine authored a very informative paper about the USS Shark called 'A Gallant Little Schooner. It can be downloaded here:
The cannon from the USS Shark is currently housed at the Cannon Beach History Center & Museum in Cannon Beach OR. The Shark sank in 1846, and the cannon was recovered on the beach in 1898. It became the namesake of the tiny coastal town.
The Cannon Beach Historical Society hopes to have the cannon and capstan restored in 2012.

Daytrips from Seaside Oregon
There is a wide variety of not-to-miss recreational opportunities around Seaside. Several great state parks and major historical attractions are within a day's drive. A trip to Ecola State Park, located a few miles south of Seaside, takes you through a forest of towering Sitka spruce. The road opens up to some of the best views of the ocean and Haystack Rock, a 235-foot basalt monolith that is a bit of a rock star in Cannon Beach. Exploring the tidepools at the base of Haystack Rock is a favorite pastime for visitors.
History buffs will want to check out a variety of historical attractions in the area. Fort Stevens State Park features the historic Battery Russell that you can explore, and an observation deck with the perfect vantage point for watching ships navigate the treacherous Columbia River bar. At Fort Clatsop National Historical Park, check out a replica of the Lewis & Clark expedition's encampment and see costumed programs and other ranger-led programs.
Head north to Astoria and climb the spiral staircase of the Astoria Column to see the mighty Columbia River as it merges with the Pacific Ocean. Astoria also is home to the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum, the Flavel House, and the Columbia River Maritime Museum, where you can see the lightship Columbia, the now retired, floating lighthouse, or check out ancient maritime-related artifacts like a chunk of beeswax from a 17th century Manila galleon wrecked on Nehalem spit.
Golfers enjoy the beautiful courses here on the Oregon Coast. Gearhart Golf Links just north of Seaside was established in 1892 and is the oldest golf course west of the Mississippi. The Highlands is a 9-hole course with great ocean views.
Other recommended stops: check out the high-flying ziplining fun at High Life Adventures in Warrenton, slide, swing and splash around at the Sunset Pool in Seaside, or explore the many trails in the surrounding areas.
We invite you to explore the area while you're here and see beyond Seaside.
Bay Ocean Exhibit
Stop by the Tillamook County Pioneer Museum for their latest exhibit on Bay Ocean.
3 urban legends of Oregon
No this isn't a new kings of England video. Blame it on all the snow Washington state has been pummeled with. I hope you enjoy this new addition to the urban legends playlist.
This was the video that almost never was because earlier today my laptop screen was broken but thankfully I was able to hook it up to my t.v. and I finished this video. In the future, I plan on getting it repaired and when that happens I will be using my older computer so there might be videos of lower quality resolution and frame rate.

Grant's Getaways: Astoria Walkabout with Gerry Frank
I’m a big believer that of all the inviting qualities that Oregon has to offer – stunning scenery, rich and varied foods and exciting recreation – above all, it’s the spirit of the place, embodied by the people who live here, that sets Oregon apart.
I recently joined Gerry Frank, a man who gets a kick out of helping us make the right connections with our home state, at the Columbia River Maritime Museum in Astoria. Few can boast of a passion for their home state as deep and long lasting as Gerry Frank’s love for Oregon! At 91, he does not know the meaning of taking a break as Oregon’s unofficial travel ambassador – Frank owns an unmatched knowledge of Oregon that is fresh, engaging and honest.

Unlikely Sunken Treasure Off Of The Oregon Coast
Yes, that's a giant hunk of beeswax, older than the United States. In this classic, originally aired in 2008, a team of archeologists investigate the wreck of a sailing ship that went down near the Oregon Coast in the late 1600s. The cargo – including beeswax — has been washing up ever since.

A little bit of history about Astoria, Oregon
Astoria is a port city located in on the Oregon Coast. Founded in 1811, it is the oldest American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains and the oldest city in the state of Oregon. Astoria is located on the south shore of the Columbia River, where the river meets the Pacific Ocean. The city is named for John Jacob Astor, an investor from New York City whose American Fur Company founded Fort Astoria at the site. Astoria was incorporated by the Oregon Legislative Assembly on October 20, 1876.
The Lewis and Clark Expedition spent the winter of 1805–1806 at Fort Clatsop, a small log structure southwest of modern-day Astoria. The expedition had hoped a ship would come by to take them back east, but instead they endured a torturous winter of rain and cold, later returning the way they came.Today the fort has been recreated and is now a historical park.
Astoria has served as a port of entry for over a century and remains the trading center for the lower Columbia basin, although it has long since been eclipsed by Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington, as an economic hub on the coast of the Pacific Northwest. Astoria's economy centered on fishing, fish processing, and lumber. In 1945, about 30 canneries could be found along the Columbia; however, in 1974, the Bumble Bee Seafoods corporation moved its headquarters out of Astoria and gradually reduced its presence until closing its last Astoria cannery in 1980.[22] The lumber industry likewise declined; Astoria Plywood Mill, the city's largest employer, closed in 1989, and the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway discontinued service to Astoria in 1996.
Astoria was the setting of the 1985 film The Goonies, which was filmed on location. Other notable movies filmed in Astoria include Short Circuit, The Black Stallion, Kindergarten Cop, Free Willy, Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III, Benji the Hunted, Come See the Paradise, The Ring Two, Into the Wild, The Guardian, and Green Room.

Tom and Sue Hunton, owners of the Camas County Mill, have given their community's old schoolhouse a new purpose. For over 125 years, the Lower Fern Ridge School has stood on the outskirts of Eugene, playing the role of schoolhouse, honey house and decaying storage space. That was until Tom and Sue Hunton, owners of the Camas Country Mill, decided to give it new purpose.
