Cannon Mountain Aerial Tram Franconia Notch New Hampshire Skiing & Views of Mount Lafayette
Here are some scenes captured at Cannon Mountain Ski area in Franconia Notch New Hampshire. It was extremely cold on this Friday February 20th 2015. With tons of fresh snow, ski conditions were ideal. Riding the tram up the mountain is as much fun as skiing down the mountain. At the summit, there is a spectacular view of Mount Lafayette and other peaks in the White Mountain Range. You can warm up, get a drink and a bite to eat inside the lodge.

Franconia Notch State Park in Summer
From Cannon's Aerial Tramway to the Flume Gorge, Franconia Notch State park is loaded with endless adventure in the summer!
Driving From Cannon Mountain To Loon Mountain, N.H.
Driving From Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway To a little past Loon Mountain, New Hampshire through the town of Lincoln to the entrance to The White Mountains on The Kancamagus Highway / Route 112
To continue on The Kancamagus HWY through the White Mountains to Conway click here:
Winter February 2016 was the warmest winter since 1790 and the least amount of snow.
New Hampshire Route 112 (abbreviated NH 112) is a 56.39-mile-long (90.75 km) east–west state highway in northern New Hampshire. The highway winds across the state, connecting Bath to Conway through the heart of the scenic and mountainous White Mountain National Forest.
The eastern portion of NH 112 is known as the Kancamagus Highway, running 32 miles (51 km) through the White Mountains from Lincoln to Conway. 26.5 miles (42.6 km) of the highway have been designated a National Scenic Byway by the United States Department of Transportation under the name Kancamagus Scenic Byway. The highway is known for its views of autumn foliage and is a popular drive in September and October for so-called leaf peeping tourism.
The Kancamagus Highway stays open all winter, although it occasionally closes for short periods while crews clear heavy snows. Its only major intersection, Bear Notch Road, which connects with the town of Bartlett, is closed all winter.
Much of the western portion of NH 112 is also in the White Mountain National Forest, passing through Kinsman Notch with the Lost River tourist attraction. The section between NH 116 and North Woodstock is called Lost River Road
Lincoln is a town in Grafton County, New Hampshire, United States. It is the second-largest town by area in New Hampshire. The population was 1,662 at the 2010 census. The town is home to the New Hampshire Highland Games and to a portion of Franconia Notch State Park. Set in the White Mountains, large portions of the town are within the White Mountain National Forest. The Appalachian Trail crosses in the northeast. Lincoln is the location of the Loon Mountain ski resort and associated recreation-centered development.
The primary settlement in town, where 993 people resided at the 2010 census, is defined as the Lincoln census-designated place (CDP) and is located along New Hampshire Route 112 east of Interstate 93. The town also includes the village of North Lincoln and the former village sites of Stillwater and Zealand (sometime known as Pullman) in the town's remote eastern and northern sections respectively, which are now within the White Mountain National Forest.
Cannon Mountain (formerly Profile Mountain) is a 4,080-foot (1,240 m) peak in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. It is known for both its technical rock and ice climbing on its cliff face and skiing at Cannon Mountain Ski Area. Until the formation collapsed on May 3, 2003, it was also home to the Old Man of the Mountain.
Cannon has three sub-peaks with heights of 3,693, 3,700, and 3,769 feet (1,125, 1,127 and 1,148 m), collectively known as The Cannon Balls. Geologically, it is an exfoliating granite dome. Part of the Kinsman Range, the mountain is located within Franconia Notch State Park.
Loon Mountain Ski Resort is a ski resort in Lincoln, Grafton County, New Hampshire, United States. It is in the White Mountain National Forest. Its vertical drop of 2,109 feet (643 m) is the tenth largest in New England. It is located on Loon Mountain.
One of the beginner slopes (Sarsaparilla)
Loon Mountain hosts more skiers than any other resort in the state.[citation needed] The resort was founded in the 1960s.
On September 19, 2007, Boyne Resorts, a Michigan-based resort company, announced it had acquired the lease to operate Loon from Booth Creek Ski Holdings. In 2011 the resort was expanded by four trails. It also increased the number of snow guns by 170 to a total of 600, at a total cost of $1.4 million.
One notable activity available during the summer at the resort is the Guest Train Engineer Program, allowing guests to learn how to operate a live steam locomotive on the 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge J.E. Henry Railway.

Slack Packing- Cannon Mountain, Franconia Notch NH
Cannon Mountain used to be known as Profile Mountain before the rock formation that looked like a man fell in May of 2003. The mountain's rocks are pretty crumbly and from the weather they get up here in New Hampshire it doesn't surprise me that his face fell off...
The parking lot is right off I-93, exit 34B. The trail starts to the left of the skiing buildings. It's 2 miles to the summit.
Check the weather and be prepared!!

This drive in the southwestern corner of Vermont is not a loop; you will need to double back to return to the start or step off the route where ever you choose. This drive also dips into northwestern Massachusetts to visit the delightful town of Williamstown. The Vermont towns of Manchester and Bennington are cherished for their classic New England beauty structures, and for their fine museums, dining and shopping. Take all or a part of the drive, which includes a very outdoorsy side trip to the pristine Somerset Reservoir. This drive has lots of digressions for dining and wining.
This loop drives starts and ends at the bustling, hippie-period-redux town of Brattleboro, with lots of good dining, fun shops, and a circus school, and travels on and around Route 9, also called the Molly Stark Byway. The drive passes through the Mount Snow ski area, which offers scenic chair life rides on the Bluebird Express daily during foliage season. You will pass through delightful towns like Newfane and Whitingham, and the views all along the way are guaranteed to be spectacular if the weather cooperates.
Lakes Bomoseen and St. Catherine Loop -- 55 miles
This drive is actually two intersecting loops, forming a figure eight, so you can shorten or lengthen the entire drive as you see fit. The loops travel around Lake Bomoseen, Birdseye Mountain, and Lake St. Catherine. A neat side trip takes you to Proctor, where you can learn about and marvel at the state’s historic marble quarrying industry. Also, tour a real castle!
Upper Connecticut River Valley Loop -- 115 miles
This loop is a large north-south oval in east-central Vermont, starting and ending in the beautiful town of Woodstock and passing through the Killington ski area. A small side trip takes you to the dramatic Quechee Gorge, also known as Vermont’s Little Grand Canyon, with fun souvenir shopping right nearby. You can shorten the drive easily by doing only pieces of the loop.
Stowe and Northern Mountains Loop -- 60 miles
This drive starts and ends at Stowe and its world-famous ski mountain, where, in the fall, you can take a gondola sky ride and see the fall foliage from above as you warm up the seat for wintertime skiers coming up next. Also near Stowe are two waterfalls, where adventurous people may hike or take photos or have a picnic. The drive also passes one of the state's parks, with a beautiful mountain lake. Prepare for classic images of Vermont’s Green Mountains. Also, a quick, 6-mile side-trip down Route 100, directly south of Stowe like a tail on this drive loop, is Waterbury Center, a sweet place, partly because of the presence of Cold Hollow Cider Mill.

Cannon Mountain Ski Area, Franconia Notch State Park, New Hampshire (NH), USA. 2013.
Upper Cannon Trail. From the tramway unloading station on the top of the mountain down to mid-mountain. Back in 1991 Bones and I would take this run repeatedly all afternoon. Midweek days after school the mountain was all ours. That was the first year the Profile chairlift was installed and the trail cut. Before that a T-bar took people to the top from mid-mountain. That was a thigh burner on a snowboard with one foot strapped in. Twenty plus years later and it is still my favorite run. It is just perfect for carving with it's perfect pitch and banked turns. Of course, I am older and slower now. I am still reeling in and passing folks. Hard boots and plate bindings on my twenty year old Ride Kildy 159SL salom race board. It is still classic yet cutting edge state of the art technology.
Cannon Mountain Summit - Franconia, NH
After a little more than 2 hours hiking up the Hi-Cannon Trail (That's why the Cannon Mountain hike was much harder than Pack Monadnock because Cannon is a much taller mountain being more than 4,000 vertical feet high), we finally reached the summit in which you can see a great view of the surroundings (including the towns of Bethlehem, NH and Littleton, NH to the north as well as unclear views of New York, Vermont, Maine, and Canada). We had our lunch on the observation tower and while we were up there, we could also see the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway (Which takes people up and down the mountain in under 6 minutes just to save some walking) as well views of I-93 (For which the cars look a lot like dwarves from the summit since they are so far away from the summit) as well as another view of Mt. Lafayette. We ended up hiking down Cannon Mountain through the Lonesome Lake Trail (Which was much more rocky), but overall we had a great time there indeed. Anyways, I hope you all enjoyed my videos of our trip to Cannon Mountain.
Note: The next time that I ever visit Cannon Mountain again (That if I ever do visit it again which is highly unlikely), I will take the Aerial Tramway up to the top of the mountain next time instead of hiking. Also, many people can also see Cannon Mountain as far south as Woodstock, NH while traveling on I-93 North through the White Mountains and Franconia Notch Parkway.

Old Man of the Mountain - Cannon Mountain - Franconia Notch NH
The Old Man of the Mountain, also known as the Great Stone Face or the Profile, was a series of five granite cliff ledges on Cannon Mountain in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, United States, that appeared to be the jagged profile of a face when viewed from the north.
The rock formation was 1,200 feet (370 m) above Profile Lake, and measured 40 feet (12 m) tall and 25 feet (7.6 m) wide. The site is located in the town of Franconia.
The first recorded mention of the Old Man was in 1805. It collapsed on May 3, 2003.
Seven years after the collapse, on June 24, 2010, the OMMLF, now the Friends of the Old Man of the Mountain, broke ground for the first phase of the state-sanctioned Old Man of the Mountain Memorial on a walkway along Profile Lake below Cannon Cliff.
It consists of a viewing platform with Steel Profilers, which, when aligned with the Cannon Cliff above, create what the profile looked like up on the cliff overlooking the Franconia Notch.
Cannon Mountain (formerly Profile Mountain) is a 4,080-foot (1,240 m) peak in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. It is known for both its technical rock and ice climbing on its cliff face and skiing at Cannon Mountain Ski Area.
