Kayaking in Taranaki - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 43: Today we are kayaking in Taranaki! We are taking a kayak tour to Sugar Loaf Islands in New Plymouth with Canoe & Kayak and then checking out the studio at Cruize FM.
Yesterday - Day 42 -
Tomorrow – Day 44 –
About this video:
Today we are in the Taranaki city of New Plymouth and we are heading over to Canoe & Kayak Taranaki to do a kayaking trip over to the Sugar Loaf Islands.
After getting set up with all the gear, we head down to the beach and harbour in New Plymouth, have a quick lesson, then get into the water with Canoe & Kayak Taranaki.
We follow our Canoe & Kayak Taranaki guide over to the Sugar Loaf Islands from New Plymouth in Taranaki which only takes us about 30 minutes. We have views of the city and Mt Taranaki along the way.
When we reach the Sugar Loaf Islands, we see some New Zealand fur seals, as well as hear about the fascinating Maori history surrounding the Sugar Loaf Islands and the whole Taranaki area.
We play and paddle around the Sugar Loaf Islands then head back toward New Plymouth. Tonight, we are invited to record a commercial for a local Taranaki radio station, Cruise FM, for the Ducks & Drakes Backpackers.
So what do you think about kayaking in Taranaki? Is kayaking in Taranaki something you would do?

Kayaking through a sea cave off New Plymouth, New Zealand.
On a recent coastal paddle found a nice cave to paddle though. 90% percent of time swell makes it impossible.

Kayaking Taranaki, New Zealand.
One of my favourite paddles along the north Taranaki coast and up the Mimi River. On days when there is no swell it is so good to be able to get in close to the cliffs and explore the caves and tunnels.

Kayaking with AMAZING views - Paparoa National Park, New Zealand
Am I really in New Zealand right now? I found myself asking that question throughout the whole day that I explored Paparoa National Park in New Zealand's South Island, but especially during my kayak adventure. It felt like I teleported to an African jungle, or a Hawaiian island, or a different planet altogether. It was pretty close to an out-of-body experience.
I stumbled upon this gem while I was hitchhiking down the west coast and the guy who picked me up drove right past it. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw how beautiful it was, lightly covered in haze during golden hour. So I HAD to delay my plans and spend the next day exploring this beautiful place.
It is right next to the ocean and the town of Punakaiki. Not only does it have incredible limestone gorges, it has the Pancake Rocks with a natural blowhole, caves, animal watching, and short or multi-day treks. After I hiked around, I waited until golden hour to take a kayak up the gorge. The views were incredible. I definitely recommend Paparoa National Park to those traveling in New Zealand.
If you'd like to kayak in Paparoa yourself, check out Punakaiki Canoes (not sponsored):

New Plymouth Coastal Walkway - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 42: We’re in New Plymouth, Taranaki where our first Taranaki activity is to check out the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway!
Yesterday - Day 41 -
Tomorrow – Day 43 –
About this video:
It’s Day 42 on New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year where today’s activity is to do the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway!
After spending a morning at the Duck & Drakes Backpackers, we head to the coast of New Plymouth to do the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway. There are loads of sculptures, art (and slides which we may or may not use) along the way. We also check out some rock pools.
Along the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway we see the Len Lye Wind Wand and the Te Rewarewa Bridge. They look particularly awesome at sunset.
From the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway we make our way back into the city and back to the hostel.
What do you think of the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway? Is it something you would do in New Plymouth?
