Half day Canoe hire trip from Kerne Bridge to Symonds Yat
Canoeing the Wye from Kerne Bridge to Symonds Yat takes half a day. We operate two trips a day, in the morning (09:00 - 12.30) and afternoon (12.30 - 16.30). You could linger with a three quarter day trip if you wished, starting at 11.00 am and finishing at 4.30pm. Ideal for an extended lunch (mind not to drink too much though).
CANOEING FROM KERNE BRIDGE TO SYMONDS YAT
Setting off from Kerne Bridge you will pass through Lower Lydbrook, and navigate around a small island. This is only 25 minutes downstream but you may wish to take a break here as there are refreshments that can be purchased here.
Continuing your canoeing along the Wye you will pass Welsh Bicknor on your right and English Bicknor on your left. At Welsh Bicknor there is a former rectory with a church in the grounds, and a large grassy area ideal for picnics.
Shortly after is the area where the 18th century Rev. Gilpin first introduced the word 'picturesque' to the English language in describing the surrounding landscape. For him it defined that kind of beauty which is agreeable in a picture.
When the river starts to turn west you will come through a beautiful valley. You will find Ship Rock high above your left shoulder. The cliffs that run along the skyline are Coldwell Rocks, home to the Peregrine falcon. The end of the line of cliffs is marked by Symonds Yat Rock.
As you come under the rocks there is a shingle beach that backs onto a meadow on the opposite side, which acts as the perfect half way stop off for a picnic or a snack.
From here the River Wye takes a long wide oval course, nearly coming back on itself at Symonds Yat. But before reaching Symonds Yat you will paddle your canoe under Huntsham Bridge (the green bridge) and it takes about 25 minutes back from here.
As you enter Symonds Yat West you will see large boulders on the left, this is the landmark we advise paddlers to remember as our landing point is on the right just opposite them.

Canoeing the River Wye | Hoarwithy to Symonds Yat
In early July 2019 I spent a Friday and Saturday canoeing down the Wye with my 7 year old daughter, from Hoarwithy to Symonds Yat. It is the first time either of us has done this kind of trip and to share this adventure together was the sort of experience that makes me go all mushy and emotional.
We canoed along the River Wye, from Hoarwithy to Symonds Yat, camping the night in Ross-on-Wye.
The trip was 18km on Day one and 22km on day two. It is an easy beginner trip for anyone wanting to try out a multi-day canoe trip for the first time, as we did. I went with my 7 year old.

Places to see in ( Symonds Yat - UK )
Symonds Yat is a village in the Wye Valley and a popular tourist destination, straddling the River Wye and on the borders of the English counties of Herefordshire and Gloucestershire. It is within a few miles of Monmouthshire and the Welsh border. The name is said to come from Robert Symonds, a 17th-century sheriff of Herefordshire, and yat, an old word for a gate or pass.
The ferry at Symonds Yat has always played a huge part in the life here. In 1800 there were 25 hand ferries between Ross and Chepstow just like those outside Ye Old Ferrie Inn and the Saracen's Head today. They were introduced in Roman times to link the forts of the Doward and the Yat and have served military, civilian, tourist and horse traffic over the years.
Symonds Yat originally encompassed all the lands southerly of Huntsham curve on both sides of Symonds Yat Rock and would have included the area around Coldwell Rocks. The name Symonds Yat used to refer to quite a large area of land and the hamlet of Symonds Yat (East), consisting of the Saracen's Head Inn, the Fish House, Lockkeepers Cottage and one or two cottages on the hillside, was specifically called New Weir and is seen on maps as such up until 1955.
Symonds Yat (East) is on the eastern side of the river, very close to the Gloucestershire border. It has three hotels, WyeDean Canoe and Activity Centre and the Saracens Head Inn (with accommodation). A steep footpath leads from the village up to Symonds Yat Rock. Another footpath and a cycleway, constructed on a former railway line, runs on the eastern bank to Monmouth.
Symonds Yat (West) is on the western side of the river. It has a large caravan and camping site (Sterretts Caravan Site), and a small amusement park owned by Kimberly Danter (daughter of Henry Danter and family member of the famous UK showmen the Danter Family). Symonds Yat (West) amusement park used to have a small funfair which was removed in 2010 due to lack of service.
( Symonds Yat - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Symonds Yat . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Symonds Yat - UK

Thinking about canoeing the River Wye?
I hope this video encourages you to get a canoe and travel down the River Wye.
In this video we travel from Glasbury to Byecross Farm campsite on a two day trip. We parked our car at Byecross Farm campsite and used haytaxibus.co.uk service to take us including canoe & gear to Glasbury, where we 'put in' and set off on our journey.
Our first campsite was 'The Pound' at Whitney-on-wye which was about 10 miles down river. It offered good facilities next to the pub 'The boat inn' which gave us a much deserved pint.
The next day we travelled apx 12 miles down river to our destination Byecross Farm campsite which was holding a charity event 'Byecross River Rock' a campsite I would definitely return to, highly recommended. I met some some great people, wonderful memories. Thats what we do it for ;)

River Wye canoe trip, wild camping, 4 day paddle from Glasbury to Hereford
Canoe trip on the River Wye from Glasbury in Wales to Hereford in England. 4 day paddle covering approx 30 miles on one of the finest stretches of the middle Wye, passing through Hay-on-Wye, Whitney, Bredwardine, Monnington Falls and ending at Hereford. Eschewing the established campsites, we instead chose to have a few nights on gravel beaches and grassy patches right next to the river. Provided you treat the countryside with respect and leave no trace of your stay, it’s entirely feasible to camp next to the river in peaceful secluded spots, which was an inherent part of the whole trip for us. After all, it’s your world too !

Ross-on-Wye to Symonds Yat by River
Scenes from a Wye Valley boat journey, from Ross-on-Wye to Symonds Yat shot for
The journey of approximately 15 miles took 7 hours as water levels were very low following a very dry month of June. I think I walked in the water, towing the moat almost as much distance as I was able to ride in it.
Although shot from a boat in this instance for film kit carrying convenience, using mostly stop motion stills photography, this journey is a popular canoe route.
