Bridge Over Canso Canal at Canso Causeway Swings Open
On Saturday June 27th, I was out taking some photos from the center of the causeway. On my walk back to the Cape Breton side, while I was walking across the bridge it started to swing to allow a boat through. I decided to just ride it out. Didn't really get any warning, unless you count the loud clanging just before it started.
Canso Causeway Bridge
The Canso Causeway Bridge swings out of the way to let the vessels into the locks. This was after the HMS Olympus was towed on barge on her way to a scrapyard in Port Maitland, Ontario.

Crossing the strait of canso from the Nova Scotia peninsula to the Cape Breton Island just a few kilometers northwest of Port Hawkesbury Nova Scotia.
This was the first day of Spring.
Filmed using a VRH3 HD Dash Camera. Straight out of the box. This was close to 7PM in low light.

I made this trip in early October, 2016. Video shot with a Brinno TLC-200 Pro time-lapse camera, mounted on my roof with a homemade magnetic case. I travel with two Brinno cameras - one facing forward, the other in reverse. Sometimes the reverse camera captures better video (fewer raindrops and bugs hit the rear-view lens).

Crossing Canso Causeway
The Canso Causeway (Cabhsair Chanso in Gaelic)Coordinates: 45°38′38″N 61°25′11″W is a 1,385 m (4,544 ft) rock-fill causeway in Nova Scotia, Canada.
The causeway crosses the Strait of Canso, connecting Cape Breton Island by road to the Nova Scotia peninsula. Its crest thickness is 40 m (130 ft), carrying the two vehicle traffic lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway, Nova Scotia Highway 104 on the mainland side, and Nova Scotia Highway 105 on the Cape Breton side, as well as the single track mainline of the Cape Breton and Central Nova Scotia Railway.
Constructed in an S shape, the causeway has a base width of 244 m (801 ft) in waters having a maximum depth of 65 m (213 ft).
Cape Breton Island remains a true island as a result of the 24 m (79 ft) wide and 570 m (1,870 ft) long Canso Canal, which is located at the eastern end of the causeway to allow ship traffic to transit the Strait of Canso. The 94 m (308 ft) Canso Canal Bridge is a swing bridge which carries the road and railway line across the canal.
The word Canso is believed to be derived from the Mi'kmaq word kamsok, which means opposite the lofty cliffs.
On July 2, 2014, it was announced that the Government of Canada would transfer ownership of the causeway to the Nova Scotia provincial government. The federal government will still maintain the Canso Canal and the navigational locks.

On a very sunny Wednesday afternoon, 701 is seen crossing the Canso Causeway which connects Cape Breton Island to the Nova Scotia Mainland. The train is made up of mainly coal empties but it is still a great view of a train nonetheless.
