Barolo Borgogno Riserva 2003
oddero gennaio 3 2019

Fratelli Serio & Battista Borgogno - Cannubi 2011 - Barolo
Fratelli Serio & Battista Borgogno - Cannubi 2011 - Barolo tasted by the Best Sommelier in the World Andreas Larsson.
Dried Fruit, Dry Wood, Tobacco
A wine with a quite orange sunburst colour. Nose has a lot of evolution, it’s showing age, with a certain hint of oxidation, dried fruit; dried tomato, dried cherry. Palate has a quite dense grip, slightly firm tannin here, with elevated acidity. Fruitiness is more towards the dried fruit, dried tomato, dried cherry, dry wood, some tobacco. It has length for sure, I would say medium weight; it has length still with very present tannin. The fruit today is not really in harmony with the tannin, so it appears slightly dry and austere. I would judge this is a very traditional style, with a long oak aging, which is interesting in its own style; but I would prefer probably to put this back in the cellar, to give it a slightly rounder and more harmonious appearance.

Giacomo Borgogno & Figli - Riserva 2008 - Barolo
Giacomo Borgogno & Figli - Riserva 2008 - Barolo tasted 100% blind by the Best Sommelier of the World, Andreas Larsson.
Developed colour here, with a light ruby core and a rather tawny orange rim. Complex nose, with some development. It is showing more of a dried fruitiness; like dried cherry, some candied fruit, chocolate and a fine spiciness. There is also some wood present, like cedar wood, tobacco. Good bite on the palate. It appears a bit dry at first. It is certainly a wine that needs it’s time to open up. It is good weight here, with a lot of extract. Tannins there are just about to start to integrate. They leave a good impression on the palate, because it really keeps lingering. The finish is truly very long. With fine layers of flavour like red cherry, some mix red berries. With a dash of those spices like orange peel, ginger. This is certainly a wine with a maturity and development, but it does have a youthful acidity to it. So it is a good lift on the palate in terms of freshness and acidity. Complex wine that certainly needs some age to open up. I would happily drink it from today and over. I mean this will continue to go on for 10, 15, 20 years depending on what style you like.

Borgogno Wine Tasting at Wine Watch
This historic winery made big news in the wine world after just 250 of being owned by the same family the landmark Borgogno winery has been sold. Family owners Giorgio Boschis and his brother, Cesare, great-nephews of Giacomo Borgogno, say they finalized a deal selling the winery to local entrepreneur Oscar Farinetti and his son, Francesco, in January 2009. Local sources estimate the sale price at around $30 million.
Farinetti made his fortune initially with the Trony electronics retail chain and, more recently, with the Eataly Italian food-and-wine outlets in Turin and Milan, with stores opening soon in Tokyo and New York.
According to the terms of the sale, the Boschis brothers will continue to oversee production at the winery for the next three years. They each retain a 5 percent interest in the winery for that period. Nothing is going to change, Giorgio Boschis said. We retain complete control over the production and will carry on as normal. If we decide to sell the rest of our percentage after three years, the price is already fixed.
The sale includes a valuable inventory-around 120,000 bottles of old vintages of the winery's Barolos, from 1961 through 1990. My uncle, Cesare, built up the bulk of the collection, said Boschis, during the lean years of the [World War II] and after. We generally keep back around 20 percent of the production in a good vintage and sell [the bottles] a few at a time, mostly to the quality restaurant trade.
The Farinettis will make a few changes after the sale, according to Boschis. The winery will only produce wines from its own 49.5 acres of vineyards, including vineyard plots in the top Barolo crus, such as Cannubi, Liste and San Pietro. Consequently, production of the Grignolino d'Asti and the Freisa d'Asti reds, made from bought grapes, will cease. Boschis also said that Farinetti has made a marketing strategy agreement for the United States with his friend, Giorgio Rivetti, owner of La Spinetta in Barbaresco.
The winery currently produces around 8,300 cases of wine, including three Barolos: a standard Barolo, a Barolo Classico and the single-vineyard Barolo Liste. The rest of the production includes a Barbera, a Dolcetto, a Nebbiolo d'Alba and a small quantity of the traditional Barolo Chinato (herb-infused Barolo). The 2003 vintage of the Barolos will be released shortly, after the customary five years in the winery.
I guess we were a bit unhappy to see the winery go out of the family, said Boschis. But the new owner is a very practical person, not just a financier, and we can feel confident about the future.
I will have to leave early to get to the Great Wine Semiar's opening tasting with Madeira but I will taste through the wines before I leave to ensure that everything is up to snuff and we will have Tamer Harpke from Indigenous Selections representing the winery. Toni will be here representing Wine Watch Catering and will be serving a four course menu to accompany the tasting wines. The Fee for this tasting is $150 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463.

Sweet Fruit, Spicy Finish, Dried Cherry
Red wine with a fully developed colour, rather tawny. The nose has a certain complexity, very traditional style here with dry fruity notes, rose petals, some wood and chocolate praline; something sweet in there. Good grip on the palate; it’s a medium weight with quite pronounced tannin, still with a high extract underlined by that quite sweet fruity character with notes of dried cherry, dried plum. It still has a certain complexity, I like the spiciness here. It definitely has length as well. No new oak, traditional style in old barrels; but very good length, then more sweet fruit and that spiciness emerging on the finish. I like this style a lot; this particular example still feels a bit youthful to me, but then again when I think about traditional gastronomy with it like risotto with mushroom or anything in that direction would certainly make the wine more appealing and friendlier, so good potential here. Barolo Cannubi 2013 DOCG L'AStemia Pentita

Raspberry, Cherry, Spicy Finish
Red wine with a medium-deep ruby core and a slightly tawny rim. Intense perfume here, combining wild berries with a hint of roasted oak, tobacco, sweet spices. Nice and juicy palate here, I think it’s a wine with a good deal of extract here; intense tannin but they’re already quite polished, finely grained. Juicy red fruit here, like raspberry, cherry; well-defined by a good level of acidity even if the fruit appears on the sweeter side. Nice wine here, I think this is a traditional style with a long aging in oak, but it still maintains its fruit without appearing dry. It has a good length – a very good length actually. Apart from that fruitiness it’s well-nuanced, there are things going on there, good spiciness on the finish. I just would like a nice creamy pasta here; fettucine with cèpe mushrooms please! Thank you.
