Canungra Answered The Call
Launch video for the Canungra Answered The Call website - canungraansweredthecall.org.au.
The Canungra Answered the Call website project, coordinated by the Canungra RSL Sub Branch Inc, was made possible thanks to an Australian Federal Government Centenary of ANZAC grant.
The project aimed to tell the story of each individual, named on Canungra’s memorial, who enlisted in the Great War 1914-1918.
Drawing on World War One service records and the recollections of family members and descendants, it provides a fresh insight into the lives of those who for so long have been, to many in the wider community, simply names on a memorial and to see them, if for the first time.

AUSTRALIAN VISIT BY AIR VICE MARSHALL KY - SOUND
Taxiing into Camberra Airport, the DC 6 B bearing South Vietnam's PREMIER KY, MADAME KY and accompanying officials. Visiting Australia at the invitation of the Commonwealth Government, they are welcomed by the PRIME MINISTER & MRS HOLT. After acknowledging the National Anthems of both countries, the Premier inspects the Guard of Honour. Later Premier Ky spoke at a Press Conference. Next day in simple ceremony he laid a wreath at the Australian War Memorial. In Queensland, the Jungle Warfare Training Centre at Canungra provides an informal moment as Premier Ky mingles with wives and children of soldiers engaged on the course. A gorge in the mountains provides a shooting gallery perfectly representing jungle conditions. The muscle-toughening course leaves little doubt that these soldiers are really fit. Sotu to Sydney, and a friendly welcome at the airport, especially from Vietnamese Students. Causing gasps of admiration Madame Ky, beautiful and elegantly clad in National Dress. Banners of welcome are held aloft as the couple are greeted by PREMIER AND MRS. ASKIN. Premier Ky breaks formality to talk briefly with members of the crowd. The official residence in Sydney is Admiralty House and close by anti-Ky demonstrators wait to stage their protests. At the Maritime Service's Board steps, the Premier and Madame Ky board the luxury cruiser Mary D for the short trip to Kirribilli.

War Animal Day In Australia Announcement 24th Feb
Scott Buchholtz Federal MP Announces Australia's official War Animal Day is 24 February.
NATIONAL DAY FOR WAR ANIMALS
• We often, and rightly so, as a community pause to remember those brave Australian men and woman who have sacrificed it all for our country.
• Earlier this month at 11 am on the 11th November we came together to remember those who have served from WW1 through to modern conflict.
• At a small ceremony later that day in Canungra in my electorate another servant of the Australian Military were receiving tributes for their centuries of service.
• Today I rise to pay tribute to this often overlooked servant of the Australian Military.
• Throughout history, in war and in peacetime, animals and mankind have worked alongside each other.
• Animals have served our nation in war as:
o beasts of burden,
o messengers,
o protectors,
o mascots, and
o friends.
• I’m wearing this red and purple poppy pin gifted to me by Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation Inc.
• The purple poppy symbolises all animals who have died during conflict.
• It’s a great honour, on behalf of the Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation in Federal Parliament to dedicate the 24th February 2019 as the first National Day for War Animals in Australia
• On the 24th of February every year Australian’s will be able to pause and pay tribute to those animals who have served our country in war time and peace time.
• I thank Nigel Allsopp, a local constituent of mine and the Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation he runs for their tireless dedication and pursuit of this recognition for war animals.
• From the United Kingdom to New Zealand, countries right around the world honour Australian War Animals with a national day, and now Australia can join that honour.
• To quote the Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation: “Australian war animals have demonstrated true valour and an enduring partnership with humans. The bond is unbreakable, their sacrifice great”
• Mr Speaker, I call on all Australian’s to join with me and honour the Australian animals of war on February 24.

4 RAR/NZ (Anzac) memorial service DPR/TV/1087
The 4th Battalion, RAR/NZ (ANZAC) this week remembered the men of the Battalion who would not be returning to Australia with them later this month. At a memorial service held among the rubber trees in front of the Battalion Headquarters, the Australians and New Zealanders of the unit prayed for the 19 men killed during the tour in Vietnam and remembered also their families. The Commanding Officer, Lt Col L. R. Greville of Hamilton, Qld, addressed the men, praising their actions during their tour and asking them during their time of reunion with their families to remember the families whose sons or fathers would not be returning. The honour roll of the Battalion was read by the RSM, Last Post was played and the traditional two minutes silence was observed. Reveille was then sounded, the Australian and New Zealand flags again flew high and the ANZAC Battalion carried on with its preparations to return home. (Also identified: RSM WO1 A. C. Toghill of Redcliffe, Qld; NZ Chaplain M. Vercoe of Fielding, NZ; Aust Chaplain I. Graham of Sydney, NSW).

Last Post Ceremony for Paul Large 18 August 2013 - Battle of Long Tan

Killed in Action 18 August 1966 in the Battle of Long Tan

Today, 18 August 2013, we remember and pay tribute to 21 year old Private Paul Andrew Large, of 12 Platoon, Delta Company, of the 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, on the 47th anniversary of his death at the battle of Long Tan.
Paul Large was born on 6 June 1945 in Wellington, New South Wales. As a child he moved to Coolah with his family. The local creek was a central focus of Largie's childhood, where he, his mates and his black dog, Monty, would spend days swimming and catching yabbies. As he grew up he played for the local football team and became a good shot with a rifle.
Paul Large was conscripted into the army when his number came up in the National Service Scheme birthday ballot in 1965. He was posted to the 6th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment in Brisbane for a period of intensive training. His mate Lawrie recalled how the first thing Paul told him after training was that his fellow recruits couldn't shoot well. After their first rifle range drill, he said he couldn't wait for his turn with the rifle to 'show 'em how'.
But they pulled themselves together, and Paul reported to his parents:
The CO of Canungra announced on Friday night that Delta Company was the best company, and 12 Platoon the best platoon, that had been through since World War II. It might not seem like much to you, but, believe me, it is an achievement that any company would be proud to have. We will have a reputation to live up to, but after working with all the blokes out there, we are all sure we can live up to it.
6RAR was deployed to Vietnam between the 31st of May and the 9th of June. Paul left Australia on the 6th of June 1966: his 21st birthday. 6RAR was based at Nui Dat in the Phouc Tuy province of South Vietnam and conducted cordon and search operations in the surrounding villages against the Viet Cong.
On 18 August 1966, just ten weeks after Paul Large arrived in Vietnam, D Company were in an isolated position in a rubber plantation near Long Tan when a Vietnamese force many times the size of the 108-strong company repeatedly attacked their position. The determined defence of D Company, helped by ammunition resupply by air from the RAAF, artillery assistance and, finally, reinforcement by another rifle company travelling in APCs, held them off for three hours.
The Battle of Long Tan was the most costly single engagement for Australians in the Vietnam War. Eighteen Australians lost their lives, including Private Paul Large. His body was returned to Australia and buried in his hometown of Coolah, NSW. He was 21 years old.
His name is listed on the Roll of Honour on my left, along around 500 others from the Vietnam War, and his photograph is displayed today beside the Pool of Reflection.
This is one of the many stories of courage and sacrifice told here at the Australian War Memorial. We now remember Private Paul Andrew Large, and all of those Australians who have given their lives in service of our nation.
