HORSESHOE BEND - 2019
Hey Friends,
Today we are going to visit Horseshoe Bend & Lower Antelope Canyon.
Horseshoe Bend is a horseshoe-shaped incised meander of the Colorado River located near the town of Page, Arizona, United States.
Antelope Canyon was formed by erosion of Navajo Sandstone, primarily due to flash flooding and secondarily due to other sub-aerial processes.
Both the places are a photographer's and traveller's dreamland.
You need to visit the Antelope Canyon by a guided tour only.

After a few days in Dallas we flew to Salt Lake City and rented a car (AVIS). From SLC it took us a couple of hours before reaching the Hampton Inn, which was a perfection location in between Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon. Next days morning we wake up early to participate at The Wave walk-in permit lottery but unfortunately we were not drawn - instead we hiked through Wire Pass Slot Canyon ( In between we visited the Horseshoe Bend and the Lower Antelope Canyon in Page, Arizona.

The Grand Canyon, is a steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River in the state of Arizona in the United States. It is contained within and managed by Grand Canyon National Park, the Hualapai Tribal Nation, the Havasupai Tribe and the Navajo Nation. President Theodore Roosevelt was a major proponent of preservation of the Grand Canyon area, and visited it on numerous occasions to hunt and enjoy the scenery.
The Grand Canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, up to 18 miles (29 km) wide and attains a depth of over a mile (6,000 feet or 1,800 meters).[1] Nearly two billion years of Earth's geological history have been exposed as the Colorado River and its tributaries cut their channels through layer after layer of rock while the Colorado Plateau was uplifted.[2] While the specific geologic processes and timing that formed the Grand Canyon are the subject of debate by geologists,[3] recent evidence suggests that the Colorado River established its course through the canyon at least 17 million years ago.[4][5] Since that time, the Colorado River continued to erode and form the canyon to its present-day configuration.[6]
For thousands of years, the area has been continuously inhabited by Native Americans who built settlements within the canyon and its many caves. The Pueblo people considered the Grand Canyon (Ongtupqa in the Hopi language) a holy site, and made pilgrimages to it.[7] The first European known to have viewed the Grand Canyon was García López de Cárdenas from Spain, who arrived in 1540,More Info

Grand Circle Vacation 2013: Las Vegas, Zion, Page Arizona, Grand Canyon North
WEBSITE:
YouTube Video Index -- A list of all of my videos:
We did this same circle 11 years ago and we wanted to take our five and a half year old son on this trip. For us a good starting point is Las Vegas and since we had a wedding to go to their it worked out great.
Las Vegas and Zion National Park are only about 2.5 hours apart. Part of the Grand Circle is Bryce Canyon but the Grand Canyon Lodge North Rim closed on October 16th so we cut our trip a little short.
Las Vegas to Zion:
Basically we took Interstate 15 from Las Vegas to HWY 9 into Zion National Park. It took about 2.5 hours.
Zion to Page Arizona:
From Zion we took HWY 9 which goes through the park and out the 1.5 mile long tunnel to the city of Kanab. From Kanab we took HWY 89 into Page Arizona. About 3 hours with a few scenic stops.
Page Arizona to Grand Canyon North Rim:
HWY 89 to Alt 89 was closed through Page when we went so we had to take HWY 89 all the way back to Kanab then we took Alt 89 (89A) to HWY 67 which takes you directly to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. About a 4 hour drive. Normally through Page on 89A it would take 2.5 hours.
The Monument Valley, Grand Canyon South and Grand Canyon West are all part of the Grand Circle but we didn't have the time to do the complete route.
It is quite a scenic drive and there is a lot to see in each place.
In Zion if the climate is right (Summer) you can walk the Narrows which we did the first time we were there. There is also a hike up to one of the peaks which we didn't do since it is dangerous (Angels Landing) where six people have fallen to their deaths. Zion is just a spectacular National Park.
In Page you have the Glen Canyon Dam which is impressive just by itself. There is enough cement in the Dam to pave a 4 lane highway from Page Arizona to Chicago Illinois. It took 17 years for Lake Powell to fill after it was completed and it is rated to last for another 300-500 years. American built and engineered.
Lake Powell is nice and I am sure in the Summer it is a great destination. In the Winter there wasn't much going on.
There is also Horseshoe Bend which is about 1 mile up the road on HWY 89 from Wal-Mart (I know, go figure). You will see a small sign and a turnoff. It is about ½ mile hike down to it. It is amazing. People come from all over the world just to see it.
Antelope Canyon is also a must see. It is right up HWY 98 just before the giant factory you will see a turnout to the right. This is where you pay and take a tour. You can also do a tour from companies in town. If you want to see the famous light beams you will need to go in July. But be warned it is pretty crowded at that time. When we went it was sparse at most.
We were at the Grand Canyon North 11 years ago but didn't stay at the Grand Canyon Lodge at the North Rim. We decided this time to spend the night. The food at the Lodge was okay and the little cabins turned out nicer than they looked. It is a great place to stay and a very private experience as the North Rim is not a popular destination. But I think the North Rim is the best of the four Rims.
Our trip was almost cancelled due to the US government shutdown. At the last minute the Governors of Utah & Arizona stepped in and used State funds to open the park - literally at the last minute for us since we had reservations Saturday and Zion was reopened Saturday morning.
Here are some contact info for you:
Grand Canyon North Rim Lodge:
In Page there are a few hotels, we stayed at the Days Inn - it was an OK hotel:
In Zion if you want to stay within a mile of the park entrance you need a hotel in Springdale UT. We stayed in the Best Western which was a great hotel with spectacular vistas and a free buffet breakfast.
A note about the food on the trip:
We couldn't find a good restaurant anywhere on our trip. The food was average to bad. When the hotel breakfast buffet was the best meal of the trip (Best Western in Zion) you know your in trouble.
It is hard to get the grandeur of it all from the video and I suggest going yourself to each of these places. You won't be disappointed.

Antelope Canyon, Page Arizona USA
We discovered another natural wonder.
When we arrived in Page Arizona we did not know what we would find here. The only activity we heard of was to visit Antelope Canyon. We did and were very glad we did. There is an upper canyon tour and a lower. Both are magnificent. I recommend that you take the 11:30 AM upper canyon photographer's tour since that is the best time, and the only way to get enough time and space to really enjoy it. You will have to make a reservation as they are booked out two months. The lower tour is best at 10:30 AM, is in small groups and leisurely. A must see.

The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided gorge carved by the Colorado River in Arizona. It is largely contained within the Grand Canyon National Park — one of the first national parks in the United States. Sycamore Canyon Wilderness 4x4 Tour
Complete details about this trail and others can be found at
Sycamore Canyon Wilderness northwest of Sedona, Arizona is one of the most breathtaking regions in the southwestern United States. It's a protected region where you can only hike but there are numerous points where 4x4's can access right up to the boundary for incredible vistas or ancient cliff dwellings.
Todd and I were leading a group from meetup.com and we had quite the variety of vehicles for this easy route. We met up north of Phoenix and caravaned to the Gold King Mine in Jerome, where we aired down for 68 miles of dirt. After the very dusty road through Perkinsville, we headed up the freshly grated trail leading to the old cabin and eventually the cliff dwellings.
Todd and I had run the trail two weeks prior and it was an actual 4x4 trail, but this time it had been completely grated for 2wd. Not sure how I feel about that one. Anyway, it sure saved us a bunch of time going out and back.
We stopped for lunch at the old Railroad Draw cabin and then headed over to hike into the wilderness to the dwellings. The hike is a quick 400 vertical feet and on the backside of the ridge overlooking Sycamore Canyon. Believe me, it's well worth the hike but it does require a little bit of rock scrambling to reach the dwellings.
With the trail improvement?, we were able to take our time working our way up to the tall pines of Kaibab National Forest. As planned we landed early at my marked group site. Everyone picked a spot under the trees and had dinner before joining the group around the campfire.
We hit the trail at 8am on Sunday for another long day on the dirt. Our first stop was a little lake before heading out to the amazing Sycamore Point. You have to go see this place, it's amazing. And just like everywhere else so far, we had the place to ourselves.
Heading back out to one more point of interest along Sycamore Canyon. The start of the canyon is just as amazing as the others plus there were some rock climbers hanging off the cliffs as we were walking around. It's a really short walk down to the giant waterfall (usually dry). The last stop on our canyon tour was the vertigo-inducing Volunteer Canyon. It literally just drops off into what seems like forever.
We had been right on schedule all weekend and it continued to allow us to take our time for the last several miles of pines that dropped us right out along Highway 17, just south of Flagstaff.
I would like to thank all the attendees who came out for a weekend adventure to remember. Also special thanks to Todd for the support and taking up the very dusty back of the group.
Thank you for checking us out.

Rainbow Bridge National Monument: World's largest natural bridge

ABOUT RAINBOW BRIDGE NATIONAL MONUMENT NEAR PAGE ARIZONA
The monument is a rainbow-shaped natural bridge of pink sandstone spanning a canyon above a creek that winds toward man-made Lake Powell in southern Utah, U.S., near the Utah-Arizona boundary. The monument is located in the Navajo Reservation, where it lies on the northwestern flank of Navajo Mountain; it is within Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.
The monument, established in 1910, occupies 160 acres (65 hectares). . It is 290 feet high (the Statue of Liberty could fit underneath) and 275 feet wide. The top is 42 feet thick and is probably the largest natural bridge in the world.
Embedded among canyons carved by streams, the monument is situated on a remote desert plateau and can be reached only on foot, by horseback, or by boat from Lake Powell. The peak of Navajo Mountain, which reaches an elevation of 10,388 feet (3,166 metres), is 5 miles (8 km) southeast. Plants, fed by water seeping from the canyon walls, grow in profusion nearby and include wild orchids and maidenhair ferns.
The bridge has long been a religious site for the region’s Native Americans. Its existence was not documented until 1909, when it was reached by explorers making the difficult overland journey to Navajo Mountain. Access to the area improved dramatically in the early 1970s after the Glen Canyon Dam had impounded the waters of the Colorado River to form Lake Powell.
That’s just a small part of the adventure and beauty you’ll find here!
