Rainbow Mountain Hike - Secret Kyrgyzstan | Fairytale Canyon | Skazka canyon
Rainbow Mountain Hike - Secret Kyrgyzstan | Fairytale Canyon | Skazka canyon
Fairytale Canyon (also known as Skazka Canyon) is a magical landscape with incredible colour and beautiful shaped in the rocks. It really is Kyrgyzstan’s rainbow mountain - the one that nobody knows! Everyone flocks to the rainbow mountains in Peru, but Fairy Tail Canyon is an unspoilt beauty that everyone seems to be missing!
I love how few people seem to be exploring Kyrgyzstan, it really is a get there whilst you can place!!! ...and before everyone else does! The local name is “Skazka canyon” and it has more recently been dubbed Fairytale canyon... to us, it will always be the incredible Rainbow mountains that we explored as a family.

How to get to Fairytale Canyon
Fairytale canyon (Skazka canyon) is a bit tricky to find on google maps. Fairytale canyon is located around 4km west of Tosor village on the South shore of lake Issyk Kul. It is around 100km west of Karakol.
1. If you are going by bus from Karakol: Minibuses run from Karakol West bus station every hour or so. You will need to take a bus that goes from Karakol to Balykchy (Балыкчы) and tell the driver that you want to stop at Skazka Canyon. Locals, including bus drivers, will probably not know the name “fairy tale” so you will need to use the local name “Skazka Canyon” (Каньон Сказка). The journey takes around 2 hours from Karakol. As you are travelling along the south shore of Issyk Kul (away from Karakol and towards Bishkek), the entrance to the canyon is a dusty road to the left of the road. Unless you have your own car you will probably need to trek a few km up the dusty track to the canyon - it is a very beautiful trek in its own right.
2. If you are going by taxi from Karakol: The cheapest way to do it by taxi is to flag a car at the side of the road as it leaves Karakol in the West direction. Explain you would like to visit Skazka and agree a price. A little Russian can be very helpful.
Skazka canyon is very cheap to visit 50 KGS (around 50 pence!) There is a small ticket hut on the road up to the canyon. Top tip: If you visit in the summer bring sun cream and an umbrella as it is very hot and exposed at the canyon.

Places to stay
If you are staying in Karakol it is possible to visit Skazka canyon as a long day trip. There is also some accommodation Tosor. If you would like to stay on a yurt camp situated on a beach by Issyk Kul lake, the closest place is the Oimo Tash Ethno-complex:
Ethno-complex Oimo Tash: LINK TO COME HOLD TIGHT! :-)
Yurts cost around 1,000 Som (about £10) if you are happy to rock up and see what they have. If you would like to book in advance it will cost more but at least you will know you have a place to stay.
NOTE: At present the Oimo Tash yurt camp is incorrectly pinned on google maps. It is located a few km to the West of Skazka Canyon and is right by the lake. It is easy to spot if you are keeping an eye out towards the lake.
Check out or video about Oimo Tash here:

Movie of the Skazka Canyon in Kyrgyzstan, near Tosor. It is also called 'Fairytale canyon', due to its various shapes and colours.

After we learned how to set up a yurt and how to produce Shyrdaks, and a visit of the Bel-Tam Yurt Camp, a visit of the Fairy Tale Canyon, in Kyrgyz Kan'on Skazka, is on our agenda. The Fairy Tale Canyon lies on the southern shore of Issyk-Kul Lake, about 4 km from the village of Tosor.
For a while, we drive in the direction of the Karakol, before we turn right into a dusty road. A barrier blocks the way, as a small amount is charged as admission fee. We follow the road for about 2 km before we arrive at a parking lot.
The mountain scenery in front of us is breathtaking. Less because of the height, but due to the various unusual shapes and the bizarre colors.
At a yurt, we meet Karin and Jeff Carter, who came to Fairy Tale Canyon with friends. They invite us to melon and bread. During a short conversation, we learned that one of the men has transported cars from Germany 7000 km to Kyrgyzstan. But I hurry to climb a nearby viewpoint and make a flight with the drone.
A kind of cleft or a rampart leads from this viewpoint across the terrain and ends in a bizarre pointed hill. Often one compares this formation with the Chinese wall and in a miniaturized form, a similarity is given. The hill is more reminiscent of a Harry Potter fantasy landscape. That's why Skazka Canyon, Fairy Tale Canyon, is the perfect name. We can hardly get enough of these grandiose shapes and colors.
The colors and forms are more bizarre than one can imagine. The rust-colored color comes presumably from iron ore, the yellow of sulfur. The earth has already mixed a wild cocktail here. Our guide Dasha tells us that her parents always warned her not to take a bath in the little lake at the entry to the Fairy Tail Canyon. The lake is radioactively contaminated. Back home, I study the maps and actually discover nearby a decommissioned uranium mine from Soviet times. Presumably, the contamination comes from that.
Although I have an excellent all-around view from my viewpoint, there is a strong wind. The drone swings very much in the turbulence but keeps very well stable. Only when I want to capture the drone again, it does not arrive against the air flow. I have to fly up once more and then fly in from the other direction, to capture the drone.

Skazka (Fairytale) Canyon, Kyrgyzstan
Skazka Canyon is one of the most stunning places in Kyrgyzstan, a canyon filled with fantastical sandstone shapes that give the spot its name, which means fairytale in Russian. Over millennia of erosion, the red sandstone has taken on forms that some say resemble animals, landmarks, or characters from legends.
Located on the south shore of Lake Issyk-Kul, Skazka is on the main road from Karakol to Kaji-Sai, about 4 km (2.5 miles) from the village of Tosor. The road is marked well, so even a casual visitor can wander in and have a look around. A more dedicated traveler would do well to hire a guide, in order to hear about the legends and stories associated with Skazka Canyon, and to learn more about each formation.

Masal Kanyonu, Kırgızistan
Canyon Fairy Tale - Kırgızistan'ın en ilginç yerlerinden biri оlup, kumtaşı ağırlıklı farklı renkteki arazinin gün içinde değişik şekillerde görünmesinden dolayı bu ismi almıştır. Kanyondaki arazi binlerce yıldan beri erozyondan dolayı, bazı masal canavarlarına benzemekte ve efsanelerden kalma antik kaleleri andıran şekilleri andırmaktadır.
Masal Kanyonu, Kırgızstan'ın Isık Göl Bölgesinde, gölün güney kıyısında yer almakta olup, Karakol'dan Kacı-Say'a giden ana yol üzerinde, Tosor köyünden yaklaşık 5 km batıda ve ana yoldan 2 km uzaklıktadır. Karakol'a 90 km, Bişkek'e 300 km uzaklıktadır.
Fairytale canyon Skazka
During my two month visit to Kyrgyzstan, a good amount of my time was spent in the beautiful Lake Issi Kul area.
Moving along the south coast of Issyk-Kul lake from Karakol town, before you reach the small village named Kadji-Sai, you have an opportunity to get into the most beautiful mountain landscapes.
The canyon was named because of its bizarre rocky landscape, which for many years has been transformed by erosion into amazing sculptures and formations. Some formations look like The Great Wall of China and you can also find other formations that look like snakes, dragons, sleeping giants and even whole castles. From the canyon you can see a majestic panorama of Lake Issyk-Kul and snow caped mountains.
Dedicated to my dear Photographer Compatriot; Natalia Arentseva!
This would make a great place for a photo shoot!

❤️ IN THIS VLOG:
We've made it down the mountain after a couple of interesting days spending time with locals. We hitchhike a few kilometres to a place called Ottuk on the shore of Lake Issyk Kul, Kyrgyzstan's largest Alpine Lake. We find a beautiful camping spot and spend the rest of the day enjoying the beautiful scenery, watch a beautiful sunset.
The nest day is Malin's birthday and we celebrate it by just relaxing by the lake before heading out to the road again to hitchhike to our next destination. Before leaving we have lunch in typical Kyrgyz yurt, nearly get scammed and leave a bit grumpy.

Time Lapse Photography: Silk Road Beauty
Order silk road tours online at:
Kyrgyzstan is the untouched Olympus of the world. It rests quietly on the Silk Road in between China, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, holding itself high above sea level. Eighty-five percent of the country stands at over 1,000meters and 40% at over 4,000meters. Ninety percent of the country is mountainous, resembling a large blanket of terrain that someone scooped off level ground, bunched up and dropped in Central Asia.
The main mountain range that runs through Kyrgyzstan is the Tian Shan, otherwise known as the Celestial Mountains for the clouds that constantly drift across the mountain peaks.
This time lapse video showcases why Kyrgyzstan's natural beauty makes it such a rare jewel in Asia. Its atmosphere makes for a truly surreal road trip.
While the Kyrgyz Republic is mainly covered in mountains, there's more to the nature in Kyrgyzstan than just that. Snuggled into the mountains are hundreds of alpine lakes. The country's most famous lake is Issyk-Kul. Issyk-Kul and is the second largest alpine lake in the world (6,236 sq. km, 2,408 sq. miles) and received its name hot lake because despite its high elevation, it never freezes over in the winter. Other popular lakes are Sary-Chelek, Ak-Say, and Song Kul.
Canyons, reservoirs, and rock formations also draw visitors from all over the world. Fairytale (Skazka) Canyon is famous for its rock formations that convincingly imitate the shapes of a dragon, the Great Wall of China, a hippopotamus, a snake, and a castle to name a few. Jeti-Oguz is a village overshadowed by the figures of 7 enraged bulls paused in the nearby rock.
Even though there are many destinations people specifically visit in Kyrgyzstan, the truth of the matter is that the entirety of Kyrgyzstan's nature is a destination. Mountains, canyons, lakes, rivers, reservoirs, and rock formations, Kyrgyzstan has everything necessary for an epic road trip on the Silk Road. Scenery and life is beautiful in Kyrgyzstan.
