Visiting Waimea Canyon State Park, State Park in Waimea Canyon Dr, Waimea, HI 96796, United States
Waimea Canyon, also known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, is a large canyon, approximately ten miles (16 km) long and up to 3,000 feet (900 m) deep, located on the western side of Kauaʻi in the Hawaiian Islands of the United States. Waimea is Hawaiian for reddish water, a reference to the erosion of the canyon's red soil.[1] The canyon was formed by a deep incision of the Waimea River arising from the extreme rainfall on the island's central peak, Mount Waiʻaleʻale, among the wettest places on earth. Hawaii - Driving Kauai - Up Waimea Canyon
Driving up Waimea Canyon along Hawaii Route 550 (Waimea Canyon Drive & Kokee Road). It's a long drive up the mountain with a few gorgeous lookout vantage points. Be sure to get to the top before clouds and rain set in. We arrived at the last lookout just before the rain and raced the wall of water down the mountain road stopping quickly for a few photos along the way. The photo interludes have been inserted where we took the photos (at least per our recollection).
Waimea Canyon Trail - Waimea Canyon State Park, Waimea, HI - (March 2019)
We started the vacation off by taking the scenic drive from Lihue to Waimea State Park to do what else, but go for a HIKE! This was a bit spontaneous as we had only intended to see the canyon and take a few pictures, but decide the moderate ~6mile roundtrip hike was well in our wheelhouse. You'll see from the video that this is NOT moderate hike and you should be prepared to decide some steep and potential muddy parts.
The views from the lookout at the end of this hike are stunning. Pack plenty of water, sunscreen, bug spray, and snacks and enjoy one of the best day hikes on Kauai!

Today's adventure led us up to Waipoo Falls, which lies deep within the Waimea Canyon on Kauai! It was such an amazing day!! Had the opportunity to meet a lot of new people from all over the world on the trail and took a swim in the waterfall:)
Just wanted to continue in sending my gratitude to all my supporters so far!! THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH !!:)
Waipoo Falls is the biggest waterfall you see from the main Waimea Canyon lookout looking to the left. If you drive past the lookout a few more miles you reach the beginning of the trail. If you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle you can drive down a narrow dirt road to save you about half a mile of walking. From there you have about a mile to get to the falls but as you are walking you are deep within the canyon looking into it almost the whole time. It is surreal.
As always please be considerate of the island by picking up your trash and staying on designated hiking trails. I would not recommend hiking when it is raining, wet, or muddy. There are multiple places where you are close to cliffs edge and it will be fatal. PLEASE KOKUA

Native Hawaiian History of Waimea Canyon Lookout in Kauai
Native Hawaiian History of Waimea Canyon in Kauai:
A Native Hawaiian charged with commercial vending in a state park says he was only practicing his religious and cultural rights.
Punohu Kekaualua III, of Wailuauka, had a dozen supporters in tow as he appeared at Kauai District Court on Wednesday to plead on a petty misdemeanor charge.
Kekaualua travels around the island each morning in native Hawaiian dress, to conduct religious and cultural activities. On Feb. 25, he was standing at Waimea Canyon lookout wearing a malo and spirit helmet when he was cited for commercial vending within the jurisdiction of Division of State Parks.
Officers of the DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement issued the citation to Kekaualua. The violation is a petty misdemeanor and punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 and/or 30 days in jail.
“I don’t sell anything, so I don’t know how I got cited for commercial vending,” Kekaualua said. “I go out there every morning and got cited for practicing my religion.”
Kekaualua pleaded “innocent” and stated he is not guilty of anything. He said the citation was for trying to keep his culture alive.
Kekaualua was observing portents, or looking to the sea, land and sky for signs of something that could happen to inform the community down below, Edens said. To be barred from performing duties in Hawaiian dress in a Hawaiian place should be a hate crime, she added.
“The visitors were taking photos with him and they were dropping money in a bowl, and they called that commercial vending,” Edens said. “We are saying that he is performing his religious ceremonies and holy men have the right to receive alms.”
The Department of Land and Natural Resources previously identified Opaekaa Falls and Wailua Falls as two areas with increasing vending activity. It added that illegal vending was up on state land throughout Kauai.
DLNR considers illegal vending as a detrimental impact to a visitor’s experience at state parks, by decreasing accessibility, devaluing the wilderness experience and overusing resources.
Under DLNR regulations, commercial activity involves the use of, or activity in, a state park for which compensation is received by any person for goods or services rendered. This could include displaying merchandise, or in demanding or requesting gifts, money or services, or providing fee-based transportation to and from the parks.

Waimea Canyon Hike to Waipo'o Falls - Kauai
Beautiful 4 mile round trip hike called the Canyon Hike (to Waipo'o Falls), in the Waimea Canyon area on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. The first part is through a forested area. The trail then comes out onto a ridge, with stunning views of Waimea Canyon. Continue past the ridge to a trail intersection. Go left to visit a small waterfall with a natural pool. Go right from the intersection to view the upper stage of two step 800 foot Waipo'o Falls from above. If you are brave, you can stand or sit on a rock that overlooks the falls from above, as shown in the video. Great hike! We hope you enjoy the video. Let us know if there are any questions or comments.
KUAUI HAWAII - Waimea Canyon and Fern Grotto
KUAUI HAWAII
we visited Waimea Canyon; a blowhole; wailua river and falls; took a boat trip up the river to fern grotto the location that is famous for its cave and weddings and were treated to a traditional Hawaiian wedding song.
Kauaʻi or Kauai (/kə.ˈwaɪ.iː/; Hawaiian: [kɔuˈwɐʔi]) is geologically the oldest of the main Hawaiian Islands. With an area of 562.3 square miles (1,456.4 km2), it is the fourth largest of the main islands in the Hawaiian archipelago, and the 21st largest island in the United States. Known also as the Garden Isle, Kauaʻi lies 105 miles (169 km) across the Kauaʻi Channel, northwest of Oʻahu. This island is the site of Waimea Canyon State Park.
Waimea Canyon, also known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, is a large canyon, approximately ten miles (16 km) long and up to 3,000 feet (900 m) deep, located on the western side of Kauaʻi in the Hawaiian Islands of the United States. Waimea is Hawaiian for reddish water, a reference to the erosion of the canyon's red soil. The canyon was formed by a deep incision of the Waimea River arising from the extreme rainfall on the island's central peak, Mount Waiʻaleʻale, among the wettest places on earth.
Geologically the canyon is carved into the tholeiitic and post-shield calc-alkaline lavas of the canyon basalt. The lavas of the canyon provide evidence for massive faulting and collapse in the early history of the island. The west side of the canyon is all thin, west-dipping lavas of the Napali Member, while the east side is very thick, flat-lying lavas of the Olokele and Makaweli Members. The two sides are separated by an enormous fault along which a large part of the island moved downwards in a big collapse.
The canyon has a unique geologic history—it was formed not only by the steady process of erosion, but also by a catastrophic collapse of the volcano that created Kauaʻi.
Like the other Hawaiian islands, Kauaʻi is the top of an enormous volcano rising from the ocean floor. With lava flows dated to about 5 million years ago, Kauaʻi is the oldest of the large Hawaiian islands. Roughly 4 million years ago, while Kauaʻi was still erupting almost continuously, a portion of the island collapsed. This collapse formed a depression, which then filled with lava flows.
In the time since, rainwater from the slopes of Mount Waiʻaleʻale have eroded Waimea Canyon along one edge of the collapse. The cliffs on the west side of the canyon are composed of thin lava flows that ran down the surface of the Kauaʻi volcano. On the other side of the canyon, the cliff walls are built from thick lava flows that pooled in the depression. Over time, the exposed basalt has weathered from its original black to bright red.
Waimea Canyon State Park encompasses 1,866 acres (7.5 km²) and is a popular tourist attraction on the island. It provides a wilderness area with numerous hiking trails. It can be accessed from Waimea on Hawaiʻi state road 550, which is 18 miles long and leads up to Koke'e State Park. The island of Niihau, only a short distance west of Kauai at that point, can be clearly seen from the highway
