Rich in Life, History and Stories
The Wall of the Ancient
Great Wall
For nearly 5,000 years, people
have lived in these canyons - longer
han anyone has lived uninterrupted
anywhere on the Colorado Plateau.
In the place called Tsegi, their homes
and images tell us their stories.
Today, Navajo families make their
homes, raise livestock, and farm the
lands in the canyons.
A place like no other, the park and
Navajo Nation work together
to manage the land's resources.
THE PLACE CALLED TSEYI'
Millions of years of land uplifts
and stream cutting created the
colorful sheer cliff walls
of Canyon de Chelly.
Natural water sources and rich
soil provided a variety of resources,
including plants and animals that
have sustained families
for thousands of years.
The Ancient Puebloans found the
canyons an ideal place to plant crops
and raise families.
The first settlers built pit houses
that were then replaced with more
sophisticated homes as more families
migrated to the area.
More homes were built in alcoves
to take advantage of the sunlight
and natural protection.
People thrived until the mid-1300’s
when the Puebloans left the
canyons to seek better farmlands.
Descendants of the Puebloans,
the Hopi migrated into the canyons
to plant fields of corn and
orchards of peaches.
Although the Hopi left this area to
permanently settle on the mesa
tops to the west, the Hopi still
hold on to many of their traditions
that are evident from
their homes and kivas.
Related to the Athabaskan people
of Northern Canada and Alaska,
the Navajo settled the Southwest
between the four sacred mountains.
The Navajo, or Dine' as they call
themselves, continue to raise families
and plant crops just as the
“Ancient Ones” had. The farms, livestock
and hogans of the Dine’ are
visible from the canyon rims.
Canyon de Chelly National Monument
was authorized in 1931 by
President Herbert Hoover in large
measure to preserve the important
archeological resources that span
more than 4,000 years
of human occupation.
The monument encompasses
approximately 84,000 acres of
lands located entirely on the
Navajo Nation with roughly 40 families
residing within the park boundaries.
The National Park Service and the
Navajo Nation share resources and
continue to work in partnership
to manage this special place.

North and South Rim Drives Canyon de Chelly National Monument
Having a guided tour into Canyon de Chelly is an exciting adventure and highly recommended. However, motoring above the Canyon floor on the North and South Rim Drives opens everything up to incredible views from overlooks into and around the Canyon - and, you don't need a guide. Take a day, take a picnic lunch. Enjoy.

Canyon De Chelly Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about nature park Canyon de Chelly in the USA.
There are few places in the USA that, like the Canyon De Chelly, are both a national monument of Indian culture and at the same time contain a magnificent rocky landscape that attracts the serious as well as the most casual lover of Nature. The nature reservation’s rocky terrain is formed by two long arms of land that consist of the southern Canyon De Chelly and the northern Canyon Del Muerto. This rocky landscape is located in the northeast of Arizona and in the middle of Dinétah´s heart, ancient Navajo Indian territory that today contains their reservation. Since the beginning of the 11th century, during the most important time of their culture, the Anasazi Indians built dwellings in numerous locations of the river valley. One of the most popular and historic rock settlements and archaeological areas of the Canyon is the White House, thus named due to its stark, bright appearance. These buildings are remarkable architectural examples that date back to the historical epoch of the Pueblo Tribe, between the 12th and 14th centuries. An array of smooth, eroded sandstone walls decorate each of the reservation’s valleys. However, although less frequent, more spectacular are the free standing rocky peaks such as Spider Rock. Such impressive moments reveal the magnificent beauty of the Canyon De Chelly, the sacred territory of the Navajo Indians and in the bright, burning glow of sunset, both sky and earth become as one.

I meet Pete when I drove from Gallup N.M. where I spent the night. The day before I was at Navajo Art Fair in Window Rock. Pete was doing his art work on the edge of Canyon de Chelly. Didn't take long before I realized Pete knew his Navajo past. He was more than willing to share his Navajo tales with the World.
