Caoling Historic Trail is located at the junction of Yilan’s Toucheng Township and New Taipei City’s Gongliao District, with a total length of about 8.5 km. Along the way, there are pavilions and public toilets provided for tourists to take a rest.

The Caoling Historic Trail is part of the Danlan Historic Trail between Dansui and Kamalan Prefectures built by early settlers of the Qing Dynasty. Today, it stretches across Caoling between Yuanwangkeng in Gongliao, New Taipei City and Dali in Toucheng, Yilan County. This 8.5km trail is thus called the Caoling Historic Trail.
Along the trails, plenty of native broad-leafed tree, cultivated coniferous trees, and subtropical “flying spider-monkey tree ferns” can be seen. Walk up the slope and you will see historical Diesima Bridge, Xianji Rock, a stone inscription that states “boldly quell the violent mists” by head of the Qing army in Taiwan, Liu Ming-deng, and the Tiger Inscription. After you have passed all of these spots, the hill-top scenic pavilion should not be far away. There is an antique Earth God and Goddess Temple made of stones near the pavilion and a board that marks the border between New Taipei City and Yilan County. Along the path are three more pavilions, information boards, a service area hosted by the Maintenance and Management Office under the Forestry Bureau, and public toilets. It takes 3 to 4 hours to complete one trip.

Cycling through Old Caoling Tunnel (舊草嶺隧道) in Taiwan
The Old Caoling Tunnel (舊草嶺隧道) bikeway in Fulong (福隆) in Gongliao District of New Taipei City (formerly Taipei County), Taiwan (ROC) is seen on April 22, 2012.
The total length of the Caoling Tunnel is 2,165 meters. It was the longest tunnel in Taiwan when the Japanese completed construction in 1924 (construction began in 1921). Caoling Railway Tunnel (草嶺隧道) was abandoned and closed off in 1986 when the railroad moved and reopened in August 2008 as a bikeway. The tunnel is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time. Most people cycle through the tunnel during the weekend. The entrance to the tunnel is decorated with many train-themed statues, mostly built with train parts, along with an old retired train.
Both Yilan and Taipei counties have designated the Old Caoling Tunnel (舊草嶺隧道) as an 'old historic site'.
Fulong is a popular weekend destination for both locals and expats alike. Located just about an hour's train ride from Taipei, Fulong's beautiful sandy beaches facing the East China Sea make it an ideal place for ocean lovers, surfers, sunbathers as well as campers. Various music festivals and beach parties add to the lure of the place. Also, the nearby mountains offer excellent hiking trails, especially the Caoling Ancient Trail (草嶺古道) to Dali
