Cape Chignecto - Hiking in Nova Scotia
Headed out to the Day Use trails at Cape Chignecto Provincial Park - Eatonville sections. The visitor centre was closed on our visit in earlt October, but we still were able to enter the park and explore the almost 6kms of trails along the coastline of the Bay of Fundy.

There are a number of lookout points including a steep hike down to Anderson Cove. But overall the trails were essentially old carriage trails with numerous spots for picnic tables and benches to enjoy the view.
The area, like many others in the area, were busy logging settlements. On a clear day, you can see across the Bay of Fundy towards the town of Alma and Fundy National Park which for all purposed was an abandoned logging town once the sawdust filled the salmon rich rivers and pools.
The hiking is fairly easy, with no difficult sections. Plan your visit on a clear day to fully enjoy the scenery.
Depending where you came from, you either return to Amherst or take the scenic route to Advocate Harbour to Five Islands and to Truro.
For a more challenging route, the Advocate Harbour entrance to the park offers more options including walk-in camping sites and cabins in case you wanted to undertake the 3 day backcountry hike around the cape.

Cape Chignecto Provincial Park Hike - 3.5 days
Dad & I hiked Cape Chignecto along the coast from Red Rocks to Eatonville with 3 overnights. Thanks for giving it a watch! Please like & subscribe to my channel. No squirrels were harmed during the making of this video (but god knows the little tree rats would have deserved it).
Located near the town of Advocate Harbour in Nova Scotia Canada, the park's trail follows the clifftops lining the coast and offers occasional spectacular views of the Bay of Fundy. Of the 56km of trial in the park we did just under 40km. It was a good trip but with lots of ups & downs (literally & figuratively).
Eatonville Shuttle Service: Ask for Wayne or Mark at the Irving gas station in Advocate Harbour - (902) 392-2292. Cost us $50 but that's a fair price considering the length of the drive and the beating the car takes. Wayne is good company too.

Cape d'Or - Hiking in Nova Scotia
Quick stop at Cape d'Or lighthouse & Restaurant. This was a manned lighthouse until it was automatized in the 1980's. Today, the light keeper's house is now a restaurant and guest house.
Samuel de Champlain visited the Bay of Fundy in 1604 and legend has it that he named this area of cliffs Cap D'Or because the copper reminded him of gold. However, the copper was known to the local Mi'kmaq far before that time. I have heard that artifacts have been found, but have not seen any myself.
Champlain found copper on the west side of the point, later mines operated on the east side, still some shafts from in Horseshoe Bay. The following link is a map of the area by an avid NS hiker
In the early 1900's, the cape was mined for copper by a New York company. When tough times arrived, the mine shut down and the housing units were shipped off across the Minas Basin in other communities.
the Cape is also where you will encounter the Dory Rips, where the Bay of Fundy and Minas Basin creates different swirls of current, all hitting the cape in different directions.
Expect to take about an hour to explore. There are 2 walking trails (as per the map at the parking lots) Lookoff & Minas trail. We would suggest walking the look off trail as the Minas Trail is not maintained and can be a hazard.
Plan your visit so that you arrive at low tide to take advantage of the cliffs.

We took advantage of the low tide in the Bay of Fundy to hike almost 1.5km along the beach which is not the red sand of Blomindon which we can see in the distance, but rather the hard rock. We can also see some coal rocks. Joggins, a UNESCO site just 30 min drive from here, was the site of coal mining.
We found the 65 step ladder going up, way up. This is where you'll find dirty, tired backpackers coming out of the wilderness after 3 day hike. Once up the stairs, you can either return along the top of the cliffs along the red rocks trail, continue to Cape Chignecto or hit the McGahey Canyon trail. We opted for the canyon trail as it would be our 9k hike since it had a good flat section once we reached the top of the canyon.
Might you that you will either be going up or down. And the elevation while didn't appear to be difficult, it was more steep than expected.
The hike up was through a nice mixed forest with certain sections within hard woods. This would be a great fall hike with the colors. The trail was well marked with blue blaze. You'll notice a lot of side trails, mainly due to the history of the area where logging was performed.
We'll eventually hit the trail to get to the Yarmouth camp site, which by the way is a steep climb up for a few kms. From here, we start to go downhill until we return to the beach.

Drone Flight over Cape d'Or Lighthouse, Nova Scotia, Canada: #NSLighthouseProject
Filmed on a chilly day in March 2016 for our #NSLighthouseProject, experience the cliffs, rocky terrain, ocean and lighthouse at Cape d'Or, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, Canada.
French explorer Samuel de Champlain named Cape d’Or (Cape of Gold) when he sailed by in 1607 and noticed glimmers of gold in the basalt cliffs; though the metal was copper rather than gold, the name stuck.
The first navigational aid on Cape d’Or was not a light, but rather a steam fog whistle, which was established in 1874. The Cape didn’t receive a light until 1922.
The present lighthouse, consisting of a one-story fog signal building with a light tower rising from one corner, was built in 1965, but became automated in 1989.
