Hurricane Irene - Hyannis, MA.
Some footage from Hurricane Irene shot in Hyannis, MA. Hurricane Irene was a large and powerful Atlantic hurricane that left extensive flood and wind damage along its path through the Caribbean, the United States East Coast and as far north as Atlantic Canada in 2011. The ninth named storm, first hurricane and first major hurricane of the annual hurricane season, Irene originated from a well-defined Atlantic tropical wave that began showing signs of organization east of the Lesser Antilles. It developed atmospheric convection and a closed cyclonic circulation center, prompting the National Hurricane Center to initiate public advisories late on August 20, 2011. Irene improved in organization as it passed the Leeward Islands, and by August 21 it moved very close to Saint Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. The next day, Irene made landfall at Category 1 hurricane strength in Puerto Rico, where severe flooding resulted in significant property damage and the death of one person.
APPX 0150 HRS Annual Memorial Day Drive By to Salute Our Troops in the Spotlight 5 30 16
HYANNIS – It's an annual Cape Cod tradition; each Memorial Day at approximately 2:00AM, available police squad cars in the Mid-Cape area cruise by the troops standing at attention, lights and sirens blaring.
This year’s 11th Annual “Troops in the Spotlight” at the Kmart shopping plaza was no different.
It thankfully quieted down long enough for a good number of police in the area to quickly come by and express their respect for our troops in such a unique way…
Each year representatives from all branches of the military take their turns standing at attention for one hour looking out over Route 132 and the Cape Cod Mall.
These dedicated troops stand at attention around the clock every Memorial Day, rain or shine...
The following video highlights this year’s 01:50hrs. police drive-by salute…
HN NOTE: There was a light drizzle and some fog, but otherwise the footage came out okay... and supports made it out regardless...

First Barnstable OD patient of 2016 pulled through after all...
CENTERVILLE – As you will hear in the video, it was a life-threatening heroin overdose which drew the urgent attention of bystanders and first responders earlier this evening.
At about 7:15PM, police and rescue rushed to the Bell Tower Mall for a stricken young man on the pavement beside a parked vehicle. Bystanders had begun CPR while calling 911 for help. C.O.MM. Rescue arrived and took over... everyone engaged in a collective effort to save a young life.
According to sources, a “friend” of the overdose patient fled the scene just before police arrived, while a second true friend did the right thing and stuck around to help.
The patient remained unresponsive as rescue workers were initially worried the Narcan wasn't taking hold. The patient was quickly moved up into an ambulance where medics continued the battle to keep him alive.
It was until later in the evening that HN learned the patient did in fact survive after all...
The following video highlights a formidable sequence of events which ultimately amounted to another chance for a very fortunate heroin addict to remain just so much longer among the living. Will it be the catalyst for this young man's recovery?
It's difficult to say...
But the following is certain; heroin use leads to one of three outcomes, recovery, institutional confinement, or death.

HYANNIS – A local man was out taking taking a drive in his new car shortly before midnight when he noticed heavy smoke in the area of Kalmus Beach...
… and it's a good thing he called firefighters when he did because the flames were spreading fast.
As you will see in the following HN Video, Hyannis firefighters were able to quickly knock down the flames which had already consumed a good sized area north of the beach parking area.
A vehicle was reportedly witnessed leaving the area right at the time of the fire... and Hyannis Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire.

Hangar B restaurant in Chatham, MA
You do not need to have a scheduled flight at the Chatham Municipal Airport in order to experience and enjoy a meal at Hangar B Eatery in Chatham. One of the most unique locations for breakfast or lunch on Cape Cod, the food is fresh, local, incredibly delicious, and the view is pretty cool too!
While Hangar B does not accept reservations and may have a long wait, especially on the weekends, most people do not mind. There are small planes taking off and landing throughout the day and we even observed a helicopter taking off one day.
There are picnic tables and a take-out cafe for those who want a quick bite or just to grab a cup of coffee while you wait.
Some of the most popular breakfast and brunch fare include red flannel hash, lemon ricotta pancakes and huevos rancheros. A traditional pilot's breakfast and egg sandwiches are also on the menu.
A must for anyone visiting lower Cape Cod!

Exclusive HN footage of Christian Chapman 1 6 2016
Hyannis News ... HyannisNews.com ...
EXCLUSIVE 2016 HN FILE FOOTAGE: Hyannis man pleaded guilty to federal heroin trafficking and money laundering charges…
HN NOTE: In the following January 1st, 2016 HN Body Cam Footage, you will see a rare encounter with Christian Chapman, believed to be one of the leaders of the now infamous Nauti-Block Street Gang.
As you will see in the footage, Chapman was inside a local department store buying a knife and numerous food items.
He recognized me right away as being involved with Hyannis News.
Chapman was outwardly friendly… in fact, he has always been friendly and respectful toward HN, admitting being a fan of HN coverage and humor. One could argue that Chapman was a “professional” in that respect, in that he held no animosity toward HN covering crime in the area.
I recall Chapman and I were talking about how it wasn’t personal between us (but I did urge him to stay out of trouble), which allowed us both to shake hands before going in our separate directions.
You will also notice in the footage, that Chapman, seeing that I only had a couple of items, insisted I go ahead of him in the checkout line…
We ended our conversation, I recall, with me hoping I never had film him at any future crime scenes…
… on that subject, Chapman and I both also agreed.

The following is the actual March 22, 2017 US Justice Department press release:
CAPE COD MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO HEROIN TRAFFICKING AND MONEY LAUNDERING
BOSTON – A Hyannis man pleaded guilty today in U.S. District Court in Boston in connection with trafficking heroin and money laundering.
Christian Chapman, 27, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute 100 grams or more of heroin and money laundering. U.S. District Court Chief Judge Patti B. Saris scheduled sentencing for July 12, 2017.
In October 2015, law enforcement initiated an effort to address the rising opiate epidemic in Massachusetts and on Cape Cod in particular. According to court documents, Chapman and other co-conspirators were responsible for a significant quantity of the heroin distributed on Cape Cod. A wiretap investigation led to their arrests and indictment. Chapman obtained heroin from New Bedford, amongst other suppliers, and distributed the heroin to numerous drug dealers on Cape Cod. In total, Chapman agreed to accept responsibility for between 400 and 700 grams of heroin. In addition, Chapman rented a home in Hyannis at which he stored his narcotics. In order to pay the rent, Chapman wired money to the individual whose name was on the lease.
The charge of conspiracy to distribute and possession with the intent to distribute 100 grams or more of heroin provides for a mandatory minimum sentence of five years and no greater than 40 years in prison, a minimum of four years and up to a lifetime of supervised release and a fine of $5 million. The charge of money laundering provides for a sentence of no greater than 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of $250,000. Actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties. Sentences are imposed by a federal district court judge based upon the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
Acting United States Attorney William D. Weinreb; Mickey D. Leadingham, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, Boston Field Division; Michael J. Ferguson, Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration, New England Field Division; Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe; and Barnstable Police Chief Paul MacDonald, made the announcement today. Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric S. Rosen of Weinreb’s Narcotics and Money Laundering Unit is prosecuting the case.
HN NOTES: Christian Chapman is also facing charges in Barnstable Superious Court related to the August 11th , 2016 shooting outside the Pufferbellies Nightclub, where it is alleged he shot a man in the leg before fleeing into a nearby wooded area wearing a towel over his head in an effort to hide hide his identity.
