Abandoned oil rig in Skeleton Coast National Park, Namibia's West Coast.

An abandoned oil drilling rig lost in the Namib Desert near Toscanini, was operational in the late 60's and early 70's. At the centre is V16 Caterpillar engine - the main power unit. A rig was erected by hopeful entrepreneurs long before Skeleton Coast National Park was proclaimed. Nowadays a rig serves as a perfect nesting area for birds during annual breeding season.

Заброшенная нефтяная буровая установка, находится в пустыне Намиб близ Тосканини, работала в конце 60-х - начале 70-х годов. В центре находятся остатки двигателя V16 Caterpillar - основной силовой агрегат. Местные предприниматели установили буровую установку задолго до того, как был основан национальный парк Берег Скелета. В настоящее время буровая установка служит идеальным местом гнездования птиц в период сезона размножения.

Ameib-Ranch in Namibia

5 mal war ich bereits auf der Ameib-Ranch in Namibia. Es ist immer wieder schön und ich werde auch ein Nächstes mal dahin fahren.
Es ist sauber und ordentlich, man wird sehr freundlich behandelt und die Bewirtung lässt auch keine Wünsche offen.
Für Naturliebhaber ist die Ameib-Ranch einfach ein Muss.

A Glimpse of Ameib

Namibia is a place that you either love or hate. It is such an arid landscape and its features are punctuated by the enormity of its emptiness. I’ve had the privilege of spending months at a time discovering its landscapes and am completely awestruck at how I have barely scratched the surface of what there is to explore.

In particular, the Erongo Mountain region of Namibia is close to my heart. While at a crossroads in my life, deciding what will be my next step, I spent a month alone on a farm named Ameib “The Green Place” where my interest in photography became passion.

During this time of change, I spent my days enchanted by the natural beauty and the immensity of the landscape. With its monolithic granite outcrops and ever-expanding undulations, that highlighted my own insignificance. This sense of perspective had a strangely calming effect on me. There is humility in being in a natural world that is indifferent to your presence. Your anthropocentric axioms of comfort fall away and all you are left with is, what is. Your awareness becomes more in tune with your surroundings.

In the time since then, I’ve returned to Ameib several times and have attempted to capture it during the changing seasons. In December 2016, I was there during the peak of the drought and on my last day, witnessed the first of the rains to come. Subsequently, I returned in April 2017 to see the change after the late rains.

Out of that transformation came a short film, which I’ve named “A Glimpse of Ameib” because that is all that it is, a glimpse. To attempt to share the essence of such an incredible place is no small task. To say that I have done the farm justice would be an overestimate of both my ability and what is possible in a few minutes. All I can hope is that I managed to give a taste of why it is such a special place to me.

Uranium was discovered in the Namib Desert in 1928, but it was not until intensive exploration in the late 1950s that much interest was shown in the area. After discovering numerous uranium occurrences, Rio Tinto secured the rights to the low grade Rössing deposit in 1966. Ten years later, in 1976, Rössing Uranium, Namibia's first commercial uranium mine, began operating.

Namibia: Delivering Pensions to Remote Communities

In Namibia the government has found an innovative way to deliver its universal pension scheme to elderly people living in remote rural areas: a public private partnership that has seen pension money distributed using vehicles equipped with cash machines and a biometric recognition system. Nearly all elderly people over the age of 60 are now able to access their pension payment; money which is going a long way to alleviate poverty in Namibia.

** Namibie: Servir les prestations de retraite dans les communautés éloignées **

Le Gouvernement namibien a innové pour verser les pensions de son régime universel aux personnes âgées vivant dans les zones rurales éloignées : un partenariat public-privé permet leur versement en espèces au moyen de véhicules équipés de distributeurs d'argent et d'un système de reconnaissance biométrique. Désormais, pratiquement tous ceux âgés de plus de 60 ans touchent leur retraite -- qui parcourt des kilomètres pour atténuer la pauvreté en Namibie (en anglais avec sous titres en français).

** Namibia: Pago de las pensiones en las comunidades aisladas **

El Gobierno de Namibia ha ideado un método innovador para ofrecer su plan general de pensiones a las personas de edad avanzada que viven en zonas rurales aisladas, consistente en una asociación entre los sectores público y privado para distribuir el dinero de las pensiones en vehículos dotados de cajeros automáticos y un sistema de reconocimiento biométrico. Hoy en día, prácticamente todas las personas de más de 60 años pueden percibir el dinero de su pensión, que recorre un largo camino para mitigar la pobreza en Namibia (en inglés con subtítulos en español).
