Remote Kuril Island Expedition Turns Up Treasure Trove of WWII Era Japanese Weapons!

Unique content and extreme conditions. The joint expedition by the Russian Geographical Society and the Ministry of Defense on one of the Kuril Islands, Iturup, is coming to an end. The researchers' main findings are exclusive historical artifacts that have been lying for over 70 years under lava ash and earthquake-prone soil. There are trench shelters abandoned by the Japanese army, artificial tunnels for troop movement, and, last but not least, howitzers with the wheels fuzed into the ground.

Japanese landmarks, including graves, are scattered across Shikotan, one of the four islands that make up the Kuril Island chain located to the south of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. Known as the Northern Territories by Japan, the Kuril Islands consist of the Shikotan, Kunashir, Iturup and Habomai islands.
Japanese graves on Shikotan remain well tended as people continue to return and pay their respects to their dead relatives. As the traditional Japanese graves look quite different from Russian graves, they have signs in Russian warning locals not to accidentally tamper with them.
Rivers on the island contain fragments of pottery inscribed with Japanese calligraphy, meanwhile many visitors remark on the Japanese style of the buildings. Some structures, such as a lighthouse, are still in use despite being built over 70 years ago.
While Tokyo has demanded that Moscow recognize Japan as the rightful owners of the Southern Kurils, Moscow maintains that the islands have been an integral part of Russia since they fell under Soviet control after WW2. The decades-long dispute over the ownership of South Kuril Islands has prevented Moscow and Tokyo from signing a formal peace treaty for 67 years recognizing the cessation of hostilities following the end of World War II.

Fishermen held by Russia are returned
1. Various of Japanese fishery patrol boat docking at Hanasaki Port
2. Various of people waiting
3. Various of Akiyoshi Kawamura (with cap) and Haruki Kamiya getting off the boat and getting into van
4. Van leaving
STORYLINE:
Russian officials on Wednesday released two Japanese fishermen held since their boat was seized for allegedly fishing in Russian waters in an incident in which one crewman was killed.
The Russians handed over the fishermen, Akiyoshi Kawamura and Haruki Kamiya, on Wednesday afternoon.
A patrol boat docked at Hanasaki Port, Nemuro city, Hokkaido, northern Japan while the families, friends and colleagues waited in the rain for the return of two men.
The captain, 59-year-old Noboru Sakashita, who has reportedly assumed all blame for his boat's alleged violation into Russian territory, remained in Russian custody.
Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe told reporters in Tokyo that the Foreign Ministry had again been instructed to ask Russia to release Sakashita and his vessel soon.
On August 16, a Russian coast guard boat fired at a Japanese vessel that was allegedly trespassing in Russian waters off Japan's northernmost main island of Hokkaido, killing a Japanese crab fisherman.
Russian authorities seized the fishing boat, along with its captain and the two crew members.
The incident took place near the southernmost of four disputed islands that are claimed both by Japan and Russia, called the southern Kurils by Russia and the Northern Territories by Japan.
The Soviet army seized the islands near the end of World War II.
Kunashiri Island, the southernmost island in the chain, is administered by Russia but claimed by Japan.
Each country claims the fishing boat was in its own territorial waters at the time of the shooting.
The island dispute has prevented the two countries from signing a peace treaty formally ending World War II hostilities.
The surrounding waters are rich in fish and believed to have promising offshore oil and natural gas reserves, as well as gold and silver deposits.

RUSSIA: CHUKOTKA IN STATE OF EMERGENCY
Russian/Nat
Times are tough on Russia's Arctic Chukotka peninsula.
Food supplies are not expected to last through the winter and most of the region's inhabitants are living without heat, light and running water.
To combat the problem Russia's Emergency Ministry has dispatched teams to the hardest-hit areas to assess the situation.
Chukotka has been deemed a disaster area - more than one-thousand residents have already been evacuated.
The Chukotka peninsula - a barren and poverty-stricken strip of frozen land that extends into the Bering Sea.
Although less than 100 kilometres from Alaska, Chukotka is a world away from the comforts of life in the West.
Here in the Russian Arctic life appears to have stopped working 10 years ago.
Abandoned structures and machinery litter the frozen tundra.
And where gold and mineral production once provided jobs - electricity cuts have brought output to a standstill.
Government subsidies, vital for food, transport and fuel costs, have virtually ground to a halt - leaving most residents shivering in darkened, frozen apartments with nothing to buy in the stores.
Things got so desperate this year that an Emergency Ministries team has been dispatched to the worst areas to assess the situation and evacuate those citizens in danger.
In the region of Middle Paxhali - most have all but given up hope of a better life.
SOUNDBITE ( Russian)
The village has no water, electricity or heat. We have to cart water from the river, and we have to steal coal for the stove because we are not allowed to buy it. We are forced to go to the bathroom, excuse me for saying, right on a bucket, because our toilets don't work. We end up washing in the same water that we use to wash our clothes and then we wash the floor - all to conserve what little water we have.
SUPER CAPTION: Nina Strelets, shopkeeper
At this bread factory in Chukotka only seven tons of flour are left to bake bread for the village for the entire winter.
At least three tons per month are needed to feed the population - that means bread supplies will run out in January - a time when temperatures hover at minus 50 degrees Celsius.
No fresh supplies are expected - as the only transport route is frozen solid.
Deliveries must be made in the few short summer months, but this year they were scant.
And this year many store are empty or are putting out their last supplies for sale.
Store owners expect even the bare necessities to dry up by midwinter.
The Emergencies Ministry's fact-finding mission assessed the situation on the peninsula as critical.
After finding only two buildings heated in the entire town of Cape Schmidt, more than one-thousand residents were evacuated.
Those left have resorted to homemade stoves for heating, burning anything from school books to stolen coal.
And with the harbour frozen solid, help is not expected anytime soon.
In Soviet times when government subsidies were generous, some 60 ships brought more than 700-thousand tons of food and fuel.
This year just a few boats delivered less than 29-thousand tons - frighteningly short of the population's winter needs.
Some stores in Chukotka, for the time being, are selling the basics.
But store owners expect those supplies to soon run out.
Fruits and vegetables have all but disappeared and soon meat will be scarce.
This family is forced to rewarm stale bread for diner tonight. But they consider themselves lucky - at least their stove is working.

Russia fails to back creation of world's largest ocean sanctuary in Antarctica
Antarctica is on the frontline of the fight against climate change.
Russia has failed to back the creation of what would be the world's largest ocean sanctuary in Antarctica.
It's the only country that's not behind the protection efforts, after China gave its support for a revised international plan.

Sakhalin
Sakhalin (Russian: Сахалин, pronounced [səxɐˈlʲin]) is a large Russian island in the North Pacific Ocean, lying between 45°50' and 54°24' N. It is Russia's largest island, and is administered as part of Sakhalin Oblast. Sakhalin, which is about one fifth the size of Japan, is just off the east coast of Russia, and just north of Japan.
The indigenous peoples of the island are the Ainu, Oroks and Nivkhs. Sakhalin has been claimed by both Russia and Japan over the course of the 19th and 20th centuries. This has led to bitter disputes between the two countries over control of the island. Russia seized the island from the Japanese near the end of World War II. Most Ainu moved to Hokkaidō when the Japanese were displaced from the island in 1949.

Japan-Russia ties: Putin meets Abe in Sochi
Russian President Vladimir Putin met with visiting Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi. But the two sides didn't sign any documents, nor hold a joint press conference after Friday's meeting. According to the Japanese Foreign Ministry, Abe hailed a potential breakthrough in decades-long territorial dispute with Russia. The dispute over a set of islands, known as the Kuriles in Russia and as the Northern Territories in Japan, have prevented them from ever signing a peace treaty to formally end World War Two hostilities. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the two sides are expected to hold consultations over a peace treaty at deputy foreign ministers level in June.

Kunashir rolls
Finally after 3 years after surgeries on both shoulders recovered my roll to a point where I feel comfortable. Rolling with Greenland paddle for the first time, and using it helped plenty. Some beautiful water and scenery for practicing rolls in the Kurils - in front of Hokkaido's Shiretoko peninsula and, of course, the famous Cape Stolbchaty (Zaimokuiwa-misaki).
Sea of Okhotsk
The Sea of Okhotsk is a marginal sea of the western Pacific Ocean, lying between the Kamchatka Peninsula on the east, the Kuril Islands on the southeast, the island of Hokkaidō to the south, the island of Sakhalin along the west, and a long stretch of eastern Siberian coast along the west and north. The northeast corner is the Shelikhov Gulf. The sea is named after Okhotsk, the first Russian settlement in the Far East.

WHERE ARE THE ASIAN BORDERS? (PART 3: NORTH AMERICA)
Asia is the largest of all continents, covering an area of 44,579,000 square kilometres, that's 30% of the Earth's total land area.
It has given rise to many of the world's first civilizations, and has long been home to the majority of the human population.

Do they sit nicely in between countries, or can a country be divided?
This video is part three of a three part series. We cover the specific Asian borders between Northeast Asia and North America.
In particular: Chukotka, Siberia, Alaska, Wrangel Island, Bering Strait, Bering Land Bridge, Diomede Islands, Russian Empire, the US purchase of Alaska from Russia, state boundaries or continental boundaries affecting the indigenous inuit people, St.Lawrence Island, St. Matthew Island, Pribilof Islands, Kamchatka, Aleutian Islands, Amatignak Island, Semisopchnoi Island, Commander Islands, state 180th meridian line (antimeridian), the International Date Line, the greenhouse effect and global warming.

The Island (Russian movie with English subtitles)
The Island is a 2006 Russian biographical film about a 20th century Eastern Orthodox monk. Pyotr Mamonov, who plays the lead character, formerly a rock musician in the USSR, converted to Eastern Orthodoxy in the 1990s and lives now in an isolated village. Film director Pavel Lungin said about him that to a large extent, he played himself. Mamonov was first very hesitant to play in the film, but then was urged by his confessor to play the character. After the filming, one of the movie crew staff decided to stay on the island and live there as a hermit.

New Zealand's earthquake was so powerful the sea floor lifted TWO METRES and exploded through the sand
Photos show the scale of the devastation of New Zealand's seabed after the earthquake early on Monday
Scientists say seabed lifted about two metres on the foreshore and say they have never seen anything like it
Comes as rain and strong winds battered central New Zealand today, threatening even more damage.
These incredible photographs show how New Zealand's 7.8 magnitude earthquake lifted the seabed two metres - and exploded through the sand.
Dramatic aerial pictures reveal the scale of the devastation caused on the coastline north of Kaikoura, on the country's South Island.
Scientists say the seabed lifted an estimated two metres on the foreshore and admit they have never seen anything like it.
It comes as rain and strong winds battered central New Zealand on Thursday, threatening further damage - just days after the quake killed two people and sparked with huge landslides.
More than 1,000 tourists and residents have since been evacuated from the small seaside town by a fleet of helicopters and a naval vessel since the 7.8 magnitude quake struck early on Monday.
