-- About this video --
This morning we join our earliest tour yet as we race the tide to get to Farewell Spit in Golden Bay. Farewell Spit is New Zealand’s longest sand spit and one of the most protected areas in New Zealand. The environment is ever-changing here and we are about to learn all about it with Farewell Spit Eco Tours. Farewell Spit Eco Tours are the only operators allowed to come down Farewell Spit and the only company you can go with to access Farewell Spit. Hikers are forbidden. Along the way, we see the beautiful environment of Farewell Spit as well as New Zealand wildlife and the lonely Farewell Spit Lighthouse.
We also take a detour to Fossil Point on Farewell Spit to see ancient sea creatures captured in the rocks.
After our early morning tour of Farewell Spit in Golden Bay, we finish around 10am with plenty of time to explore more of this remote area of Golden Bay. Next stop, Wharariki Beach.
After driving down a long gravel road we arrive at a car park to a walk that leads to Wharariki Beach. Wharariki Beach in Golden Bay is known as one of the Top 10 Most Beautiful Beaches in the World. After a walk through farmland, bush and sand dunes, we see way. Wharariki Beach has some awesome views of the Archway Islands making a stunning backdrop for photos. Wharariki Beach is also teaming with wildlife, which we end up spending time with on the way back we see some New Zealand fur seal pups. So Cute!
So what do you think of Farewell Spit and Wharariki Beach in Golden Bay? Would you visit Farewell Spit or Wharariki Beach? Add them to your New Zealand Travel bucket list!

Cape Farewell - An introduction
Cape Farewell changes the way we think about climate change. Climate change is a reality. Caused by us all, it is a cultural, social and economic problem and must move beyond scientific debate. Cape Farewell is committed to the notion that artists can engage the public in this issue, through creative insight and vision.

Farewell Spit New Zealand
Sunrise at Farewell Spit and the surrounding area from over the receded ocean.
Farewell Spit is a narrow sand spit at the northern end of the Golden Bay, South Island of New Zealand. Known to the Māori as Tuhuroa, it runs eastwards from Cape Farewell, the island's northernmost point. It is located about 50 kilometres north of Takaka and 20 kilometers from Collingwood. The tiny settlement of Puponga stands close to the western (landward) end of the spit.
It forms the northern side of Golden Bay and is the longest sandspit in New Zealand, stretching for about 26 km above sea level and another 6 km underwater. The spit runs in from west to east, and is made from fine golden sand – as Cape Farewell to the west of the spit is mostly composed of late Cretaceous quartz sandstones, i.e. silica but with traces of other heavy minerals, garnet, ilmenite, magnetite and pyroxene. The erosion of the cliffs into fine sand carried on the sea currents creates Farewell spit further east.[1]
The northern side of the dunes are steeper and unstable being constantly exposed to the prevailing winds which average over 25 km/h. The southern side which faces Golden Bay is more stable and largely covered with vegetation. The tide here can recede as much as seven kilometers exposing some 80 square kilometers of mud flats; a rich feeding ground for the many sea birds in the area but also a trap for the frequently stranded whales

We are sharing our travel videos while exploring beautiful New Zealand
We stayed in Collingwood and then drove to Farewell Spit 2nd Day which is just 20 KM away from Collingwood. Farewell Spit is a narrow sand spit at the northern end of the Golden Bay, South Island of New Zealand.
It was a wet day and we just started walking in the rain to get a glimpse of it. After some time, the Surya Devta (Sun) came out and we could go further. We reached the beautiful sand spit and enjoyed a lot with the birds and sand. While coming back we got lost and couldn't find our way back to the car park.
If you are planning to visit Farewell Spit, be ready to walk a lot, and enjoy.

Golden Bay Good Times; The Great Kiwi Bach
Let the summer good times roll with this waterfront cutie in Golden Bay. Fully furnished, private and sheltered, with a wood-burner for winter weekends and funky outdoor living for the lazy hazy summer holidays. Living is open-plan, with two bedrooms, one with built-in bunks.
There is ample room for parking and tents; with safe swimming, beachcombing and fishing at the end of the garden. The house has a modern bathroom, carport, covered decks and entranceways, even an outdoor clawfoot bath. Set well back from the road and the sea there is ample room to extend and untold years of seaside bliss to savour.
Pakawau has a local cafe and the close proximity to the wonderful West Coast is an added bonus, with Westhaven Inlet, known for its great fishing, just a short drive away. Collingwood, with its amenities and old world charm, is only a 10-15 minute drive and access to the Farewell Spit conservation area and birdlife, is a 10-15 minute drive in the other direction.
A sweet family bach, affordable retirement cottage, or an excellent holiday rental. Make an offer quick!
