Cape Kidnappers, Hawke's Bay, NEW ZEALAND
Cape Kidnappers is a luxury lodge set atop 6,000 rolling acres of pasture land in New Zealand's Hawke's Bay.
Cape Kidnappers is the home of the largest, most accessible mainland colony of gannets in the world. The 20,000 gannets at the Cape are members of the Booby family, with distinctive black eye markings and a pale gold crown.
Gannets are sized midway between a sea gull and an albatross. Visitors to the colony will see adults and young nesting in rows, carrying out their daily routine. The birds can be seen from September until early May, when they leave New Zealand for Australia. In September they return and build their nests, ready for the hatching of chicks during December and January.
New Zealand Sheep & Cape Kidnappers: Hidden Gems New Zealand
The old legend is true: There are more sheep than people in New Zealand. In fact, there are about 10 sheep for every person!
While the sheep may seem ubiquitous, they can also inspire some unexpected travel experiences. The Farm at Cape Kidnappers in Hawke's Bay is a 6,000-acre working sheep and cattle farm, where guests can get a real taste of farm life along with some incredible rural views. And for those who want even more of the farm experience, Clifton Station has shearing demonstrations using both ancient and modern techniques. But it's not just about sheep in this North Island escape. Cape Kidnappers also has the largest and most-accessible gannet bird colony in the world. Watch it all in the second in our series of Hidden Gems: New Zealand. For more, check out

In a past professional life I had run a workshop at Cape Kidnappers on the psychology of golf and at the time had never seen a golf course like it – so you could say I was a touch excited knowing I was playing Cape Kidnappers today.
Cape Kidnappers is located in the beautiful orchard and wine region of Hawkes Bay on the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand.
The Cape Kidnappers experience starts with a scene out of Jurassic Park. From the opening of the double gates at the bottom you take a long uphill journey along a dry creek bed as it weaves it’s way through forest, native bush and prairie grass. The view that greets you when you reach the top of the hill is breathtaking.
“If Cape Kidnappers were a book it would be described as an epic” explains course designer Tom Doak.
The Cape figures in Maori mythology and its name immortalizes the first visit by Captain Cook in 1770.
Everything here is on a grand scale and having such an incredible canvas to build a golf course on it must have been a real challenge for Doak to try and match it with a high-quality golf course – this he managed to do.
Cape Kidnappers is not a true links terrain: instead, the land tilts towards the sea as a series of ridges jutting out toward the edge of the cliffs. Yet the play is seaside golf at it’s finest.

Cape Kidnappers - Roadside Stories
To Māori Cape Kidnappers is Te Matau-a-Māui -- the fish hook with which demigod Māui hauled up the North Island. British explorer James Cook gave the cape its English name after a Tahitian crew member on his ship was seized by Māori. Cape Kidnappers is also home to a gannet colony where thousands of birds nest.

The Gannet Colony at Cape Kidnappers
Cape Kidnappers is the largest most accessible mainland gannet colony in the world. The 20,000 gannets at the cape are members of the Booby family, with distinctive black eye markings and a pale gold crown.
Visitors to the colony will see adults and young nesting in serried rows carrying out their daily routine. In the air above your heads these amazing birds with their six foot wing span (2 metres) the birds swoop and dive as they bring back fish. On the ground, just a few feet away, the pairs preen and perform the dance of the gannets' recognition ritual.
The birds can be seen from September to the end of April. In September they return and build their nests ready for the arrival of the chicks during December and January. The chicks are then fattened up ready for their first and departing flight in late April / early May when they go off on their annual ritual to warmer climates.
Gannet Safaris has been guiding visitors over Cape Kidnappers for over 35 years. Our safaris are the only way to be driven right to within a few feet of these remarkable birds. There is absolutely no walking required.
You will travel in comfort in our air conditioned 4 x 4 wheeled vehicles, through Cape Kidnappers Station - traversing riverbeds, broad rolling pastures, through stands of native bush, steep gullies and breathtaking inclines. There is a stop on the way at a spectacular cliff top with panoramic views of Hawke Bay right across to the Mahia Peninsula. The amazing geology of the area can also be taken in. The 36km, three hour trip includes a commentary by your tour guide / driver on the farming operation on Cape Kidnappers Station and an introduction to the gannets.
On arrival at the gannets you can stretch your legs and take in the mouthwatering scenery from your position at the brink of the cliffs edge - 100 metres above the ocean. Here your driver / guide will serve you refreshments whilst you enjoy watching the gannets perform around you.
