Broome, Dampier Peninsula and Cape Leveque: S03 Western Australia E14 Road Trip Lap
We've headed up to the top of Western Australia, checking out Broome, the Dampier Peninsula and then Cape Leveque at the very top. Wow what an oasis, one of our favourite spots on the trip so far as we lap Australia in our caravan. We stayed in our van and tents for this portion of the road trip.

TRAVEL TIPS
Tip 1 - Beach live Broome
Cable Beach is a well-known spot, so a visit here is mandatory. This white sandy beach offers many great activities. Broome has huge tidal movements and visiting the beach at low tide will provide you with a large expanse of sandy beach to enjoy - swimming, fishing, kayaking and surfing or just relax and soak up some sunshine.
Tip 2 – Sunset beer at Cable Beach
For a spectacular ocean sunset, Cable Beach will not disappoint. With colors ranging from purples and golds to fiery reds, the skies light up as the sun slowly sinks into the sea, providing picture perfect photo opportunities. Don’t be surprised that people visit Cable Beach with their 4WD!
Tip 3 – Iconic camel tour at Cable Beach
Cable Beach is famous for its iconic camel rides. Sitting high astride a camel while it walks rhythmically in time with the camel train gives you a different perspective of this magical location. We booked the tour directly at the beach.
Tip 4 – Dinner at Cable Beach Club Resort
Excellent food and beautiful location:
Tip 5 – Cape Leveque Road
The Cape Leveque Road is a regional road that runs through woodland for about 240 kilometers between Broome and Cape Leveque on the Dampier Peninsula. The unsealed and quite corrugated southern section of the road is often closed during the wet season when flooding makes it impassable.
Tip 6 – Kooljaman Wilderness Camp
Kooljaman at Cape Leveque is a remote wilderness camp owned and run by the Indigenous Bardi Jawi Communities. Situated on native title land, the locals invite you to share the astonishing diversity, pristine wilderness and unique landscape that celebrate this award-winning place as a once in a lifetime experience. Don’t forget to book in advance and early enough:
Tip 7 – Brian Lee Hunters Creek Tagalong Tour
Let Brian Lee share his country and unique Aboriginal perspective with you. Follow him down to the banks of Hunter’s Creek. Taste seasonal bush fruit and hear the ancient stories of a people who once walked this timeless landscape. Learn traditional fishing and crabbing methods. The tour concludes under a shady tree, where you cook up your catch - Bardi style on an open fire.
Tip 8 – Lombadina Community & Beach
Lombadina is an Aboriginal community on Cape Leveque. The place offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience the local way of life. Relax on white sandy beaches, characterized by pristine turquoise waters and experience the thrilling fishing and breathtaking whale watching.
Tip 9 – Bully's Bushcamp – Djoodoon
The track isn't on any maps. We came to the turn off to Djoodoon and as we went on through the sand and then some larger wet areas, we seriously started to doubt about our map reading skills. After close to 45 minutes, we arrived at Bully’s Camp. The ‘facilities’ were quite basic but it was simply great. The camp was run by a Vietnam vet who hasn’t really left there in a decade. Cygnet Bay is just beautiful. But no swimming here as there were mangroves and this side of the peninsula is croc habitat for sure.

The Dampier Peninsula and Cape Leveque certainly didn’t disappoint...
The road in is a mix of rough, soft sand and narrow tracks but definitely worth it!
We met some amazing people and learnt a lot about the lifestyle and culture of the people up here in this beautiful part of our Country ????????

Cape Leveque Campgrounds Western Australia
Cape Leveque Campgrounds at Kooljaman Western Australia. If you love camping and travelling and want to see campgrounds and their individual campsites in Australia, check out my videos.
These videos and website started off in the early nineties as markers and scribblings on a giant map of Australia on my games room wall of all the best places in Australia to go and camp, fish and four wheel drive. After many years of practical research as well as reading four wheel drive magazines and watching every camping, fishing and four wheel driving TV show (it’s been a harrowing and arduous task); I recently realised that come the time my wife and I can leave the kids behind and head off on a trip longer than a school holiday break; I’m either going to need a bloody big plastic sleeve to put the map in, or I’m going to have to drag myself kicking and screaming into the 21st century………
Though I haven’t been to every campground in Australia to video each one yet, I have done many in Western Australia and will continue until such time as I can do it full time and spend the rest of my life travelling the rest of Australia camping and videoing every campsite! It might take a while so bear with me…...
Exploring a Remote Paradise, Cape Leveque Part 1/2. Ep.57 - ROADTRIP AUSTRALIA
So after the Gibb, we nipped into Broome for a few days. Catching up with family & friends, then we scooted straight up to Cape Leveque!
We decided to drive right up to the top to meet some more friends. Gumbanan Wilderness Retreat was our choice of campsite????. We used this as a base while we explored the surrounding areas. We day tripped into One Arm Point community, had a dip at their local beach and visited the hatchery???????? (open air aquarium).
Kooljaman
Tossing up whether to visit Kooljaman, we just grabbed a day pass and had a look around the place. The western beach had impressive contrasts, with the red sandstone cliffs. Kurt had a little flick and caught a 45cm???? GT, which made him happy. We drove onto the eastern beach for a quick dip. Again a very picturesque beach, with white sand and amazing clear blue water. Not sure it was worth $35 for a day trip though.????
We so happened to visit Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm while the ‘festival of the pearl’ was on????. We popped in on a Saturday where they were doing free demo’s all day. We heard about the history of Cygnet Bay and fun facts about the place. We also got to watch them harvest a live pearl. Our intention was to do the pearl tour, but once we saw the demo’s we figured we’d pretty much seen the tour ????.
Rusty chilling at Gumbanan
A few days later we returned to Cygnet Bay to go on the ‘waterfall reef tour’????. A great few hours out on the bay seeing the local sights. We got to see the main attraction Waterfall Reef which is a reef a few nautical miles north of Cygnet Bay. Due to the large volume tides that frequent the area, when the tide is outgoing, it rushes off this large reef which results in a waterfall affect⛲️. Have you ever seen a waterfall in the middle of the ocean? We thought it was pretty darn cool to see????????.
After 4 nights at Gumbanan we moved south to Middle Lagoon. A slight 32km detour off the main road on a dirt track. It’s $15pp per night and since it was out of peak season we pretty much had our pick of the sites????????♂️. Two main beaches, one is a long sandy beach which is dog friendly???? and the other beach up the top, is great for fishing & snorkeling. We spent 2 nights here having some RnR, swimming & snorkeling around the reef.

Off-road in Cape Leveque | Mapping the Kimberley Australia
After mapping the Kimberley for 6 weeks, our Map Patrol spent a week exploring Cape Leveque's best 4WD tracks and off-road destinations. While admirers of the Gibb River Road and its many offshoots or nearby attractions (Mitchell Falls, Diamond Gorge, Lake Argyle, Purnululu) are easy to find, there are less offroad 4x4 travellers who know of Gnylmarung Retreat, Middle Lagoon, One Arm Point, Kooljaman, Pender Bay, and other stunning locations that are full of 4x4 action in the Kimberley Australia.
Cape Leveque HD
Cape Leveque and Kooljaman.
Cape Leveque lies at the end of what used to be one of the worst roads in the Kimberley, on the very tip of the Dampier Peninsula north of Broome, in one of the remotest corners of the world.
The distance from Broome to Cape Leveque—the tip of the Dampier Peninsula—is 206 km. Parts of the Cape Leveque Road are still unsealed, very sandy, and can be badly corrugated.
travelling across Aboriginal land, you end up in the Kooljaman Resort, not only one of the most isolated resorts in the world, it is also one of the most beautiful. It's good to see that the resort does the place justice, rather than spoil it like the tourism industry so often does.
