Cape Nelson Lighthouse Petrified Forest
Cape Nelson Lighthouse was a very important building that saved many lives as we mentioned above. It was built in 1882-1884 and shines its light from a commanding position at the top of the cliffs, even though the lighthouse itself is only 32 metres tall. It was built using stone that had originally been quarried from close by, however they soon ran out! So they ended up carting stone all the way from Melbourne to finish the lighthouse. Can you imagine what that would have involved.
Tarragon Limestone Cave. On arrival to the cave, another visitor warned us that they had sited a snake in the cave. So we were up for an adventure and climbed up into it. The cave really reminded us of many underground caves with stalactites and stalagmites and looking inside this cave, it seemed to have some very old, dirty and non-active ones. The view was good, but we didn’t see the snake.
Petrified Forest. A great walk along the cliff tops to see an Petrified Forest. It is not what you are expecting. Not a tree in site. It is more like a lost city really to us.
The name comes from an early theory that advancing sand engulfed an ancient forest of coastal trees, petrifying them for all time. The truth is just as fascinating though. The formation is actually a collection of hollow tubes of limestone called ‘solution pipers’, eroded by millions of years of rainfall. The process starts when water gathers in a shallow pan of sand and seeps downward dissolving the limestone. The mineral-saturated water then cements the sand, forming hard, trunk-shaped pipes. Most pipes around Cape Bridgewater are one to three metres high, although some are as high as 20 metres.
Nearby you can also see the Blowholes which reminded us all just how powerful the ocean is. Lots of shipwrecks have happened along this coast before the lighthouses were built. Boats would come out from England across months of seeing nothing but sea. They had no landmarks to use to confirm their location, and it was well before GPS was made. The first land they would see after leaving England was the coast of Victoria, or was it. With rough seas, especially to the south of Australia, ships could easily get off course. When they saw the land, they had to almost guess if the land was Victoria, Tasmania, or King Island, the Island in the middle. To get to Melbourne, they had to travel to the north of King Island so they were between King Island and Victoria. If they thought the land they could see looked like King Island, they then assumed they were to far south, so then changed direction to the north so they would go on the correct side. However if the land they saw was actually Victoria, then they made a grave mistake and would then hit Australia hard. The coast of Victoria along this stretch is sandstone cliffs, totally unforgiving to ships in the night. Hence why there were so many ship wrecks. This is why the lighthouses were so important and saved many lives.

Wrapped up warm, boots on, venturing out with my little learning photographer friend.
Camera gear packed in, and here we took ourselves. Photography fun, all whilst i filmed the stunning sun setting.
Two tourists arrive, making it even more pleasing to view: extra subjects, and to be able to share a smile with strangers whom also were admiring it just as much.
