Walk from entrance to lighthouse at Cape Reinga, New Zealand
I thought I would show family and friends how much this place has changed since they were last here. It was a windy day so cant do much about the wind noise. It is a sacred place for the Maori as the spirits of the dead follow the coastline and they leave the island by a lone tree that has never flowered.

Exploring New Zealand.
The Cape Reinga Lighthouse is located at the top of the North Island of New Zealand. It is one of the first lights that shipping observes when arriving from the Tasman Sea and North Pacific Ocean and is one of the Far North region’s most iconic landmarks with its serene beauty. It is a 45 minute drive from the holiday park and is the first stop in your drive north.

Cape Reinga offers an amazing northern New Zealand experience. Here the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean in a spectacular meeting of two currents with an amazing backdrop of the color of the water.

Cape Reinga lighthouse at the northern tip of New Zealand
The Cape Reinga Lighthouse is located on the northern tip of New Zealand;s North Island in the Northland Region. It was built in 1941 and originally fitted with a 1000 watt electrical lamp that was powered by a diesel generator. In 1987, the lighthouse was fully automated and the lighthouse keepers were withdrawn - it is now monitored remotely from Wellington. In 2000 the original lens and lamp were replaced by a 50 watt beacon that is powered by batteries that are recharged by solar cells. The beacon flashes every 12 seconds and can be seen for 19 nautical miles

Cape Reinga, Northland, New Zealand
Today in the driving rain Rochelle and I visited the Cape Reinga Lighthouse.
Cape Reinga is located at the northern most point in New Zealand. Today it was raining and the wind was blowing but you could still see where the Tasman and the Pacific Ocean meet.
The lighthouse was fully automated in 1987 and the lighthouse keepers withdrawn. It's not monitored remotely from a tracking station in Wellington.
Ok so you have just been to Cape Reinga how does it feel?
Wet
Other than very very wet, feeling good?
Yip
Awesome
Visitors from all around the world walk the path to the light house to experience the views that are defiantly worth the long drive.
Even know the weather didn't play its part today Rochelle and I really enjoyed the views and will defiantly return when the weather is better.

Cape Reinga - New Zealand
e Rerenga Wairua
The left side of Te Rerenga Wairua marks the separation of the Tasman Sea (to the west) and the Pacific Ocean. For Maori, these turbulent waters are where the male sea Te Moana Tapokopoko a Tawhaki meets the female sea Te Tai o Whitireia.
The whirlpools where the currents clash are like those that dance in the wake of a waka (canoe). They represent the coming together of male and female – and the creation of life.

Cape Reinga Best View, New Zealand
Cape Reinga is the meeting point of deep green Tasman Sea and the blue Pacific Ocean.
Maori believe that at Cape Reinga, the place of the leaping, is the point where the spirits of the dead enter the underworld.
Cape Reinga and Ninety Mile Beach Tours.
Cape Reinga and Ninety Mile Beach Tours.
Kaitaia is the northern most town in New Zealand and the last major stop before heading to the ‘top’ of new Zealand and is a good base from which to enjoy the many activities and attractions there is on offer, from the nearby Karikari Peninsula with its white sandy beaches, the Karikari Estate Winery and the well known Carrington Golf course.
Dune Rider-2To the west of Kaitaia is the coastal village of Ahipara, here you can enjoy golf, sandsurfing, 4WD treks, quad bike riding, Blokarting, fishing from the beach, surfing and diving.
Although named Ninety Mile Beach it is actually only 64 miles long stretching from Ahipara the small coastal village near Kaitaia to almost the top of the North Island.
The best way to appreciate this part of the Far North to Cape Reinga is to travel by plane from the Bay of Islands or with local bus tour operators that offer daily trips departing from The Bay of Islands or Kaitaia. You will learn the history and legends of the region including various points of interest and enjoy a drive along the magnificent sometimes wild west coast of Ninety Mile Beach.
Leaving the Ninety Mile Beach at Te Paki quick sand stream it’s time to try Sand boarding on the giant sand dunes of Te Paki before heading for Cape Reinga, which although it is not quite the furthest northern point of New Zealand its where the road journey ends. Twelve degrees below the Tropic of Capricorn, Cape Reinga thrusts its head north to bask in subtropical sunlight.
Here, under the wind-whipped Cape Reinga lighthouse, the Tasman and Pacific oceans meet, colliding in a fit of fury and spitting salty spray high as they battle for dominance.
Maori believe that at Cape Reinga, “the place of the leaping”, the spirits of the departed leap from an 800-year-old pohutukawa tree on the windswept cape to begin the voyage back to their final resting place in the ancestral homeland of Hawaiki.
Other points of interest are the views down To Cape Maria Van Diemen, and the beautiful beach at stunning Tapotupotu Bay, a sandy beach that is nestled on the eastern side of Cape Reinga. For the tramper there are numerous walks from short or multi day walks staying at Department of Conservation camp sites.
