Maryland - Washington Big Loop Run (Flyday)
A 21 mile training run through the parklands of the Washington DC metro area. From Bethesda, Maryland on the Capital Crescent trail towards Rock Creek Park to the west, then down along Rock Creek Park trail to the District of Columbia, through Georgetown, to K Street, then back up the Capital Crescent trail adjacent to the Potomac River, back up to Bethesda. Telly biked along the way and provided me support!

Washington, DC -- Capital of the United States of America, heart and center of the Land of Liberty. The city is a reflection of the country's history, achievements and aspirations. On the National Mall are some of America's finest monuments and memorials -- each a reminder of the ideals that our country stands for, and the men and women who fought for them.
The Washington Monument, Thomas Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial and the newest -- Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial - honor leaders and ideals of American freedom, democracy and equality. The World War 2, Korean War and Vietnam War Memorials pay tribute to the men and women who have paid the ultimate price for America's freedom.
Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as Washington or D.C., is the capital of the United States. Founded after the American Revolution as the seat of government of the newly independent country, Washington was named after George Washington, first President of the United States and Founding Father. Washington is the principal city of the Washington metropolitan area, which has a population of 6,131,977. As the seat of the United States federal government and several international organizations, the city is an important world political capital. Washington is one of the most visited cities in the world, with more than 20 million annual tourists.
The modern-day White House complex includes the Executive Residence, West Wing, East Wing, the Eisenhower Executive Office Building—the former State Department, which now houses offices for the President's staff and the Vice President—and Blair House, a guest residence. The Executive Residence is made up of six stories—the Ground Floor, State Floor, Second Floor, and Third Floor, as well as a two-story basement. The property is a National Heritage Site owned by the National Park Service and is part of the President's Park. In 2007, it was ranked second on the American Institute of Architects list of America's Favorite Architecture.

USA: FLOOD WARNINGS POSTED ALONG THE ENTIRE POTOMAC RIVER
Natural Sound
The legacy of Hurricane Fran lives on as the Potomac River flooded in areas of Washington DC and western Virginia.
Flood barriers were put up around buildings in the low-lying areas of Washington's Georgetown as water inundated streets and Virginia's Great Falls Park.
Flood warnings were posted along the entire swollen Potomac River, whose high waters were pushing towards the US capital.
Normally the water at Great Falls, Virginia, is viewed from platforms at least 40 feet above. Today, the water had risen to cover the overlook -- and continues to rise.
The National Park Service has closed many parks, trails and roadways near the river around the Washington area.
At Great Falls, flood waters are expected to reach at least 4 feet above the 1996 mark shown here.
In Washington, water was rising above the river barriers and onto roads. Officials have warned motorists to take extra care and many roads have been closed.
With the water not expected to recede quickly, the warning already has been extended well into Monday.
Early Sunday afternoon, the fashionable Georgetown, where the flood stage is seven feet, water was 11.4 feet deep.
Forecasters warned that the flooding could turn out to be worse than the region saw in January, when the winter storm meltdown swamped the area and caused heavy damage.

Georgetown Heritage C&O Canal Boat Tow Out
The Georgetown canal boat provided fun and educational tours to school groups and tourists for nearly 30 years, before being decommissioned in 2011 due to extensive damage. In 2016, Georgetown Heritage and the Park Service removed the old boat in preparation for the first phase of canal restoration work. Georgetown Heritage received a grant from the District of Columbia to fund the design and construction of a new boat, which will be delivered in Spring 2020.

Koolia's stroll in Downtown Bethesda, Maryland
A visit to Maryland is not complete without a stroll down the streets of downtown Betheda. Koolia listened to a band in front of the Barns & Noble book store, gazed at people dining on the sidwalk restaurants, passed by Gifford's Ice Cream shop and the movie theater at Bethesda Row.
This is how Koolia spent her last afternoon before she left for New York.

AAS Eclipse Workshop 2017
On 21 August 2017, a total eclipse of the Sun will cross the United States from coast to coast, giving tens of millions of people in a 70-mile-wide path from Oregon to South Carolina a chance to see the solar corona and experience all phases of the eclipse. The Moon's shadow will sweep across the country starting mid morning in Oregon with just under two minutes of totality and reaching maximum duration of approximately 2 minutes 40 seconds in Southern Illinois before exiting over South Carolina mid afternoon.
Outside the path of totality, all of North America will experience a partial eclipse. This event, the first total solar eclipse to touch the US mainland since 1979 and the first to span the continent since 1918, presents a unique opportunity to excite people about science and connect them personally to the cosmos, as well as to conduct several important scientific observations. We are a working group dedicated to the science and public outreach of this unique event.
The Eclipse 2017 Workshop IV took place in Carbondale, Illinois, on Friday and Saturday, 10 and 11 June 2016, at the SIU Carbondale Student Center, hosted by Bob Baer and Shadia Habbal.
