SM has 5 malls in China; 4 more being built
Despite the sour relations between Manila and Beijing because of the maritime dispute in the West Philippine sea, it's business as usual in China, at least for the SM chain of malls.
One of two walkways between enormous shopping malls, Tianjin China
My goal was to capture how large an amount of space was taken up by, effectively, one shopping centre (of many in the city). To a Canadian from the prairies, this is hard to envision.

Integration: Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei
Whilst modern development provides a vast array of transformative advantages, a major obstacle eventually cracks the surface of prosperity in every urban center - unsustainability.
Pollution, traffic congestion, over-population, expanding infrastructures and high demand on resources emerge in the maturing of a modern city, and Beijing is no different.
Enveloped by Hebei province and neighboring Tianjin, the coordination of what is known as the Jin-Jing-Ji region offers a sustainable solution to the problems of the capital’s accelerated urbanization.

Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Airport Cluster to Alleviate Capital's Heavy Air Traffic
Authorities will build a third civil airport in Beijing in part to alleviate passenger flow in the region and reduce travel costs, according to a civil aviation official in Beijing.
Feng, the head of China’s Civil Aviation Administration, said that there are plans to integrate the Daxing International Airport into the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei airport cluster, assigning specific roles to each airport.
The Beijing Capital International Airport will be mainly running for Star Alliance’s member airlines, and the Daxing International Airport, which is currently under construction, is intended to be a base camp for member airlines of SkyTeam. We are planning to make the Tianjin-Binhai International Airport an international hub in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region as well as an international freight logistics center. As for the Shijiazhuang Zhengding International Airport in Hebei [province], it will be fine-tuned to be a regional hub to provide affordable flights for more people, or low-fare airlines, said Feng.
The aviation official also said that Beijing's two existing airports have reached the limits of their handling capacities. For instance, there are almost no spare slots in the existing airline timetables for international airlines to land in Beijing.
The different locations of the airports in the Beijing and Tianjin municipalities as well as Hebei Province is expected to alleviate the heavy airport traffic in the capital.
The establishment of relevant transportation systems will also be sped up to make the commute more convenient in these three neighboring regions.
Railways and inter-city transportation will be available in all airports in Beijing. It makes no difference whether one arrives at Tianjin Airport or in Beijing, as it only takes thirty-something minutes to travel from Tianjin to Beijing with high-speed railway. That’s a significant reduction in the time difference between flying to Beijing and flying to its neighboring cities, said Feng.

8. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Wang Xueyi, Tianjin Protester:
The compensation is not fair so people can't afford to buy a new house with the money. The people are furious that they have no home and want to protest till the death. Some slit their wrists, commit suicide, jump off a building, these cases are very common. But once these things happen, the police seal off the bodies and negotiate with the family to compensate them, essentially 'gagging' them so that they won't tell the world.

STORYLINE
Protesters staged a rare public demonstration in China's capital on Thursday over what they said were illegal property seizures and compensation packages that fell far short of what was needed to buy new homes.
Wearing white headbands emblazoned with the slogan It's illegal to forcefully demolish one's house, the protesters from the city of Tianjin staged their rally outside the Ministry of Construction.
The demonstrators said government land seizures had left them with no hope of buying new homes in their booming port city, 120 kilometres (75 miles) east of Beijing.
They claimed that in one case, the government sold the valuable land in the centre of the city to developers who later entered it in a Hong Kong
auction to attract investors.
Spokesmen for the ministry did not immediately respond to faxed questions on the protesters' claims.
While protests over property seizures and other nonpolitical issues have popped up occasionally in Beijing, the one on Thursday was unusually large and well-organised.
Police and security guards attempted to prevent journalists filming the demonstration and tried to rip the headbands from the protesters' heads.
One of the protesters later told AP Television that the protesters had reached the end of their tether.
We regular citizens can't go on anymore. What can we do? We have no house, our homes have been demolished and we can't even petition,
Wang Xueyi said.
The 57-year-old claimed she had received 104-thousand yuan (14,250 US dollars) in compensation for her ancestral home in Liangyouli, in the central Hexi district of Tianjin, in 2004.
She showed documents which said officials sold the land to a local developer.
Calls to the company named were not answered on Thursday.
Wang said her husband died from stress shortly after the loss of their two-bedroom house and that she now lived with relatives.
She went on to say she was detained for more than 40 days last summer when she came to Beijing to petition the government.
The people are furious that they have no home and want to protest till the death. Some slit their wrists, commit suicide, jump off a building, these cases are very common, Wang added.
She suggested that these suicides were often covered up by officials.
The police seal off the bodies and negotiate with the family to compensate them, essentially 'gagging' them so that they won't tell the world, she claimed.
The demonstrators planned to resume their protest on Friday.

Teaching in China: Tianjin City Guide
As the largest coastal city in northern China, Tianjin has been nicknamed “Shanghai of the North” in reference to its foreign concession areas, port and European architecture. Despite being the fourth largest city in China, Tianjin is best described as “the biggest small town in China.” It is incredibly safe here and the local people are proud of their city and have a strong sense of community.
Tianjin has two prominent city centers. Its main urban area is located along the Hai River and its new and growing urban area, located on the coast of Bohai Sea, is a hub of advanced industry and financial activity.
Since the mid-19th century, Tianjin has been a major seaport and gateway to the nation’s capital. Now the two cities are linked by the fastest train on the planet. Known as the “bullet” this railway masterpiece takes a mere 26 minutes to get to Beijing. Tianjin is a modern, developed city, but fortunately, this city has retained an authentic Chinese way of life. Tianjin has a reputation throughout China for being extremely friendly, very safe, and providing delicious food. It is also inexpensive.
