The Capital and the Prison - Part 2
In this episode of Exploring Nevada, we'll take you to a place steeped in history, but one which the average citizen will not casually tour. It's the old, and still operational, Nevada State Prison in Carson City. In the heart of the old prison yard lies the original dungeon, dating back to Territorial Days, before Nevada was even a state. It was carved into the very sandstone quarry which supplied materials for not only the early prison buildings, but for structures in the nearby community a few miles to the west, against the Carson Range in the Sierra Nevada.
From the prison's thick and well-guarded walls, you can see the capitol dome shining in the distance. Once the nation's smallest state capital, Carson City has grown and prospered. Through the eyes of State Archivist Guy Rocha, we'll learn how the prison made, and continues to make, significant contributions to Nevada's state capital.

American Flat is where United States President Abraham Lincoln was going to relocate the U.S. Capital if the Union Army was loosing the Civil War. The idea was to locate the US Capitol in the Comstock due to the profuse abundance of silver for the Treasury and defend the US government from there. The Comstock is why the US Government built a mint in Carson City. The Virginia and Truckee Railroad hauled ore to Carson City refineries and smelters. The railroad is being restored as a scenic tourist line with the most beautiful heavy freight guage track and ballast.
