Driving Downtown - Troy, NY, USA 2019
Driving downtown - Troy, NY. USA
Troy is a city in the U.S. state of New York and the seat of Rensselaer County. The city is located on the western edge of Rensselaer County and on the eastern bank of the Hudson River. Troy has close ties to the nearby cities of Albany and Schenectady, forming a region popularly called the Capital District. The city is one of the three major centers for the Albany Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), which has a population of 1,170,483. At the 2010 census, the population of Troy was 50,129.
The Central Troy Historic District is an irregularly shaped, 96-acre area of downtown Troy, New York, United States. It has been described as one of the most perfectly preserved 19th-century downtowns in the [country]with nearly 700 properties in a variety of architectural styles from the early 19th to mid-20th centuries. These include most of Russell Sage College, one of two privately owned urban parks in New York, and two National Historic Landmarks. Visitors ranging from the Duke de la Rochefoucauld to Philip Johnson have praised aspects of it. Martin Scorsese used parts of downtown Troy as a stand-in for 19th-century Manhattan in The Age of Innocence.
In 1986, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), superseding five smaller historic districts that had been listed on the Register in the early 1970s.(Two years later, in 1988, the extension of the previous River Street Historic District north of Federal Street was added separately to the NRHP as the Northern River Street Historic District.) There are many buildings designed by the regionally significant architect Marcus F. Cummings. The downtown street plan was borrowed from Philadelphia, and one neighborhood, Washington Square, was influenced by London's squares of its era.
The district reflects Troy's evolution from its origins as a Hudson River port into an early industrial center built around textile manufacture and steelmaking. During this period it was rebuilt twice in the wake of two devastating fires, resulting in its mix of architecture styles. After the decline of its industries in the mid-20th century, downtown Troy was threatened by urban renewal efforts that galvanized local preservationists, leading to the early NRHP listings and eventually the creation of the district.
How I rode Amtrak train for free from Martinez, CA to Anaheim, CA (San Joaquins train)
In early February 2019, I rode the Amtrak San Joaquins train from Martinez, CA to Anaheim, CA. The entire trip took about 9.25 hours.
In the first part of this video, I explain the route, the ticket prices * and how I managed to ride the train for FREE.
The second part of this video are highlights (scenery) between Martinez and Anaheim. The San Joaquins train passes through large agricultural regions in Central California.
* At 3:25, I start comparing the value tickets and the flexible tickets. I mentioned that the value tickets were not refundable; that is INCORRECT. The value tickets ARE refundable, but there are limitations. For details, see
I apologize for the error.

Otis Traction Elevator @ The State Capitol Building Springfield, IL
This is another elevator at the State Capitol Building. An employee (if I'm correct), got on the elevator, I asked him if he didn't mind about photography. He didn't mind at all.

Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers online
This video presents lectures from several scholars of historical digital research delivered at the National Digital Newspaper Program Awardee Conference in September 2013. Ed Ayers, president of the University of Richmond; Ryan Cordell and David Smith of Northeastern University; Ahmed Johnson of the Library of Congress.
The National Digital Newspaper Program is a partnership between the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Library of Congress, and state projects to provide enhanced access to United States newspapers published between 1836 and 1922. NEH awards support state projects to select and digitize historically significant titles that are aggregated and permanently maintained by the Library of Congress. Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers, a prototype of the digital resource being produced through NDNP, is freely available to internet users everywhere. Users may search the digitized pages contributed by funded state projects and LC as well as consult a national newspaper directory of bibliographic and holdings information to identify newspaper titles available in all types of formats. The directory was compiled through an earlier NEH initiative, the United States Newspaper Program.

TINY INDICATOR! United States Traction Elevators-Solano Hall-CSUS-Sacramento, CA
What a STUPID mod! What the heck is the point of replacing the buttons?? It's almost as if its illegal for an elevator to NOT have Innovation at this school. The floor indicator is by far one of the smallest I've ever seen. These have pretty tall cabs as well. Nothing really cool.

Rats Invaded These Famous Restaurants When Business Closed for the Night
Rats running around in the open are a plague many major cities face but what happens when restaurants close for the night? The Inside Edition Rat Patrol headed to Philadelphia to see if rodents run amok once restaurants close their doors. The team visited well-known spots, including Jim's Steaks and Shake Shack, and they were shocked by what they found.
Otis Traction Elevator at Idaho State Capitol
This is 1 of 2 Otis traction elevators at the Idaho State capital in Boise, ID. They both look the same but are completely different. This is a basement-drive traction that has been completely modernized (whole capitol was renovated over the last couple years). New motor, controller, cab, etc.
The other one is far more interesting but I ran out of space and couldn't get it this time. Its a mostly original 1960's Otis overhead traction that is incredibly fast for only 5 floors and still has original motor and controller but the fixtures were replaced.
