SUMMARY
=======
Socialism in the United States began with utopian communities in the early 19th century such as the Shakers, the activist visionary Josiah Warren and intentional communities inspired by Charles Fourier. Labor activists—usually British, German, or Jewish immigrants—founded the Socialist Labor Party in 1877. The Socialist Party of America was established in 1901. By that time, anarchism also established itself around the country while socialists of different tendencies were involved in early American labor organizations and struggles which reached a high point in the Haymarket affair in Chicago which started International Workers' Day as the main workers holiday around the world (except in the United States, which celebrates Labor Day on the first Monday of September) and making the 8-hour day a worldwide objective by workers organizations and socialist parties worldwide.Under Socialist Party of America presidential candidate Eugene V. Debs, socialist opposition to World War I led to the governmental repression collectively known as the First Red Scare. The Socialist Party declined in the 1920s, but nonetheless often ran Norman Thomas for President. In the 1930s, the Communist Party USA took importance in labor and racial struggles while it suffered a split which converged in the Trotskyist Socialist Workers Party. In the 1950s, socialism was affected by McCarthyism and in the 1960s it was revived by the general radicalization brought by the New Left and other social struggles and revolts. In the 1960s, Michael Harrington and other socialists were called to assist the Kennedy administration and then the Johnson administration's War on Poverty and Great Society while socialists also played important roles in the Civil Rights Movement. Socialism in the United States has been composed of many tendencies, often in important disagreements with each other; it has included utopian socialists, social democrats, democratic socialists, communists, Trotskyists and anarchists.
The socialist movement in the United States has historically been relatively weak. Unlike socialist parties in Europe, Canada and Oceania, a major social democratic party never materialized in the United States and the socialist movement remains marginal, almost unique in its powerlessness among the Western democracies. In the United States, socialism brings considerable stigma, in large part for its association with authoritarian communist regimes. A June 2015 Gallup poll revealed that 47% of respondents would vote for a socialist President while 50% would not. Willingness to vote for a socialist President was 59% among Democrats, 49% among independents and 26% among Republicans. An October 2015 poll found that 49% of Democrats had a favorable view of socialism compared to 37% for capitalism. According to a 2013 article in The Guardian: Contrary to popular belief, Americans don't have an innate allergy to socialism. Milwaukee has had several socialist mayors (Frank Zeidler, Emil Seidel, and Daniel Hoan). In 1920, Socialist Party presidential candidate Eugene V. Debs won nearly 1m [million] v ...

SUMMARY
=======
Lyndon Baines Johnson (; August 27, 1908 – January 22, 1973), often referred to as LBJ, was an American politician who served as the 36th president of the United States from 1963 to 1969. Formerly the 37th vice president from 1961 to 1963, he assumed the presidency following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. A Democrat from Texas, Johnson also served as a United States Representative and as the Majority Leader in the United States Senate. Johnson is one of only four people who have served in all four federal elected positions.Born in a farmhouse in Stonewall, Texas, Johnson was a high school teacher and worked as a congressional aide before winning election to the US House of Representatives in 1937. He won a contested election to the US Senate in 1948 and was appointed to the position of Senate Majority Whip in 1951. He became the Senate Minority Leader in 1953 and the Senate Majority Leader in 1955. He became known for his domineering personality and the Johnson treatment, his aggressive coercion of powerful politicians to advance legislation.
Johnson ran for the Democratic nomination in the 1960 presidential election. Although unsuccessful, he accepted the invitation of then-Senator John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts to be his running mate. They went on to win a close election over the Republican ticket of Richard Nixon and Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. On November 22, 1963, Kennedy was assassinated and Johnson succeeded him as president. The following year, Johnson won in a landslide, defeating Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona. With 61.1 percent of the popular vote, Johnson won the largest share of the popular vote of any candidate since the largely uncontested 1820 election.
In domestic policy, Johnson designed the Great Society legislation to expand civil rights, public broadcasting, Medicare, Medicaid, aid to education, the arts, urban and rural development, public services and his War on Poverty. Assisted in part by a growing economy, the War on Poverty helped millions of Americans rise above the poverty line during his administration. Civil rights bi ...

SUMMARY
=======
Appalachia () is a cultural region in the Eastern United States that stretches from the Southern Tier of New York to northern Alabama and Georgia. While the Appalachian Mountains stretch from Belle Isle in Canada to Cheaha Mountain in Alabama, the cultural region of Appalachia typically refers only to the central and southern portions of the range, from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, southwesterly to the Great Smoky Mountains. As of the 2010 United States Census, the region was home to approximately 25 million people.Since its recognition as a distinctive region in the late 19th century, Appalachia has been a source of enduring myths and distortions regarding the isolation, temperament, and behavior of its inhabitants. Early 20th century writers often engaged in yellow journalism focused on sensationalistic aspects of the region's culture, such as moonshining and clan feuding, and often portrayed the region's inhabitants as uneducated and prone to impulsive acts of violence. Sociological studies in the 1960s and 1970s helped to re-examine and dispel these stereotypes.While endowed with abundant natural resources, Appalachia has long struggled and been associated with poverty. In the early 20th century, large-scale logging and coal mining firms brought wage-paying jobs and modern amenities to Appalachia, but by the 1960s the region had failed to capitalize on any long-term benefits from these two industries. Beginning in the 1930s, the federal government sought to alleviate poverty in the Appalachian region with a series of New Deal initiatives, such as the construction of dams to provide cheap electricity and the implementation of better farming practices. On March 9, 1965, the Appalachian Regional Commission was created to further alleviate poverty in the region, mainly by diversifying the region's economy and helping to provide better health care and educational opportunities to the region's inhabitants. By 1990, Appalachia had largely joined the economic mainstream, but still lagged behind the rest of the nation in most economic indicators.

SUMMARY
=======
The American Civil War (also known by other names) was a war fought in the United States (U.S.) from 1861 to 1865. The Civil War is the most studied and written about episode in U.S. history. Largely as a result of the long-standing controversy over the enslavement of black people, war broke out in April 1861, when secessionist forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina, shortly after United States President Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated. The loyalists of the Union in the North proclaimed support for the Constitution. They faced secessionists of the Confederate States in the South, who advocated for states' rights to uphold slavery.
Among the 34 U.S. states in February 1861, seven Southern slave states individually declared their secession from the country to form the Confederate States of America. The Confederacy grew to include eleven states, all of them slaveholding. The Confederacy was never diplomatically recognized by the United States government, nor was it recognized by any foreign country. The states that remained loyal to the U.S. were known as the Union. The Union and Confederacy quickly raised volunteer and conscription armies that fought mostly in the South over the course of four years. Intense combat left 620,000 to 750,000 people dead, more than the number of U.S. military deaths in all other wars combined.The Union finally won the war when General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant at the Battle of Appomattox Court House, followed with a series of surrenders by Confederate generals throughout the southern states. Much of the South's infrastructure was destroyed, especially the transportation systems. The Confederacy collapsed, slavery was abolished, and 4 million black slaves were freed. The Reconstruction Era (1863–1877) overlapped and followed the war, with the process of restoring national unity, strengthening the national government, and granting civil rights to freed black slaves throughout the country.

Hillary Clinton Boulder Rally
Hillary Clinton Boulder Rally
Hillary Rodham Clinton at Boulder Theater. Hillary Clinton make two presidential campaign stops in Colorado as the Democratic front-runner raises money and seeks energize supporters in a caucus state where her top rival is expected to thrive. (Hyoung Chang, The Denver Post)Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton (Lance Iversen, AP)Hillary Clinton will make two presidential campaign stops Tuesday in Colorado as the Democratic front-runner raises money and seeks energize supporters in a caucus state where her top rival is expected to thrive.
The former secretary of state will speak at 11:30 a.m. at the Boulder Theatre in downtown Boulder and travel later in the day to Denver for a 3:15 p.m. event at Manual High School. The trip also includes a private fundraising event at the Boulder home of Mo Siegel, one of the founders of Celestial Seasonings.
Clinton’s visit to Colorado is the second in four months and comes weeks after rival Bernie Sanders drew an estimated 9,000 to a rally in Boulder. In June, the Vermont senator brought nearly 5,000 people to the University of Denver.
The Clinton campaign said the two events Tuesday are designed to mobilize Democratic activists ahead of the state’s March 1 caucuses. The campaign said Clinton will “discuss the issues that keep Coloradans up at night” but declined to offer specific. Her remarks at an August event in Denver focused on the economy and the protection of women’s rights.
Even though most of the attention is focused on the early primary states, the Colorado caucuses may prove instrumental in determining the Democratic nominee. The free-wheeling process is driven by motivated voters, such as those drawn to recent Sanders events, but Clinton is relying on her campaign’s strong organization to drive her supporters to the precincts.
Clinton’s campaign recently hired Brad Komar, a longtime Clinton ally who managed Gov. John Hickenlooper’s 2014 re-election campaign, to lead their efforts in the state. The Sanders campaign has not yet announced hiring staff in Colorado.
If Clinton is the nominee, a new poll shows she needs to rebound i

Senior Network - The Meaning of Christmas
Commissioner Frank Avila is the Host for this Christmas Edition of The Senior Network TV program. Commissioner Avila is joined by Mark Piekarz, a Chicago tenor and pianist who returns to CAN-TV after recently taping a half-hour show of Polish classical songs. On October 20th shortly after that show, he performed an hour-long show of Polish songs at the Harold Washington Library in Chicago in conjunction with Polish Heritage Month. Mark became acquainted with most of these Christmas Carols while singing in many of the best vocal ensembles in Illinois: Coriolis(Evanston), Bella Voce(Chicago), the New Classic Singers(Glen Ellyn) and the University of Illinois Concert Choir(Urbana). Also joining Commissioner Avila is Pastor Matthew Hoffman of St. Andrews Lutheran Church. Check out the web site
